  1. Has anyone ever taken a cruise 3 weeks after surgery? My family wants to take one. Only one person knows what I am doing. Not excited about being on a boat but don't to miss valuable time with family members. The alternative would be me being home by myself

Has anyone taken a cruise so close post op?

I took one at six weeks out (had JUST been cleared for regular food) and it was incredibly obvious that I wasn't eating "normally" (I had to reassure the dining staff at every meal that the food was fine). At 3 weeks, there's no way you can keep it a secret. With preparation you can definitely do it and have a great time, but you have to accept that your family members will notice your eating habits and have some sort of explanation prepared (I recommend the truth, but YMMV).

  2. Be very careful with probiotics. That's how I gained my last 30ish pounds' date=' but boy did it fix my guts right up.[/quote']

How did the probiotics make you gain weight? I didn't realize this was a side effect and I may have to talk to my doctor about this tomorrow :(

  3. Believe it or not' date=' I got a "steal of a deal" with what I paid. We were living in WI and sleeve surgery wasn't popular at all up there....at that time. I attended a support group, pre- op and post-op. There was ONE lady who'd had it and her surgeon had to battle with the insurance company for it to be approved. Anyway, IF you could find a doctor that did our surgery, it was between 22K and 28K. Shocking, because it was so much less in the south, TX, TN, LA, GA. All over down here it was between 11K and 15K. I'm not sure why, but it is the most popular surgery here, with most of the support group people having had sleeve surgery, with 1 or 2 RNY and seldom ever a lapband patient. Before I decided to come to Dallas for sure, I check Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and even Chicago, all were about double the price, some more than double and that is for cash pay! So, I was thrilled with the price, it felt like Christmas morning when I discovered there were options when insurance wouldn't pay because I wasn't big enough and didn't have pre existing health issues. Oh well.[/quote']

My doc's cash price in OK is $9995. Doesn't include pre-op testing, but everything else (including two nights in the hospital) is included and he has a ton of experience. I've been shocked to see that the price is double that elsewhere in the US!

  4. Everyone always says that the surgery would be rescheduled but what about those of us who had no preop diet?... we all lived

Depends on the surgeon. Mine didn't require a preop diet for me, but he would have for someone older or with a higher BMI. Other surgeons don't want to sort through who does or doesn't need one, so they just make it a blanket rule and if they get in there and your liver is too big they just sew you back up and thank you for your check!

  5. Hey all' date=' I live in Enid. Dr Walton at Weightwise in Edmond did my surgery April 16th! Cool to see fellow Okies <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />[/quote']

I'm also a Weightwise patient! Dr. Broussard on 3/26. It's nice to see a few of us around here :)

  6. I just looked these up out of curiosity--the labels say they're 200mg per tablet. My NUT says she wants me on 1500mg (?!) a day' date=' and I have to take them no more than 500mg at a time, 2 hours away from taking my Multivitamin. How many mg of Calcium are you ladies taking--is it 1500, too? That would come out to 7 or 8 tablets a day, four times daily. *brainboggle* I just know I'd forget a dose...[/quote']

I would bet your calcium dose varies by age and gender. I'm only on 1000 now, but give me 10 years and I bet they'll want me on 1500 too :)

  7. I went out to dinner with my boyfriend today (this is not the frustrating part' date=' lol). He ordered half a dozen garlic rolls smothered in butter, rib rolls, full rack of ribs, and a brownie sundae. Oh, and 4 refills of his coke.

I had half of a mahi sandwich without the bread and maybe a tablespoon of black Beans.

Since I was done much earlier than him, I sat there and essentially watched him eat. At one point, just as a morsel of BBQ Sauce started dripping down the side of his mouth, I felt a really strong urge to smack the ribs out of his hand and yell SSSTOOOOPPPPP EATINGGGGGG!!!! I mean, seriously. He INHALES his food. I could swear that sometimes he doesn't even chew it. It's really unattractive to see him eat so much. Does anyone else feel this way? Am I a horrible girlfriend? Lol

Oh, and as I write this, he just went to the kitchen for a "tiny snack". Smh

I know he doesn't order so much delicious food on purpose. He's a big guy (6'3" and maybe 220lbs) so I understand he won't be satisfied with a Caesar salad. But c'mon.

Let me say one more thing: I have no desire to eat any of the stuff that he ordered. I was perfectly happy with my sandwich. but ordering and eating all that food?? Does anybody else get frustrated/annoyed/disgusted when watching people eat unhealthy food? Is it just me?[/quote']

OMG I can so relate. The worst part is when I KNOW he's not still hungry. Sometimes I'll just pointedly look at him and ask him if he's hungry and he'll look guilty and put the plate down. I don't mean to be b****y, but the deal was that we were doing this together (me via VSG and him via ketosis) so I feel like if he can complain about what I eat, it's reasonable to point out he's eating way more than he needs to!!

  8. I second that............. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Thirded!!! Come on ladies, why the hold out? :)

  9. I ordered chewable calcium citrate from Celebrate Vitamins. They have sugar-free berry' date=' chocolate, and caramel flavors. The berry is my favorite. Tastes like candy![/quote']

They do taste like candy, but beware they pack on calories and carbs like candy too! No worries if you plan them into your diet as a treat but I wasn't willing to give up 100 cals and 20 carbs a day for Vitamins, no matter how yummy ;)

  10. Will he take me even though I had thsleeve in mex. I know some dr won't.

I know we have people in our support group that were not sleeved at that facility, so I have no reason to think they won't. You'll probably have to call to be sure.

  11. I'm looking at My Fitness Pal and noticing that my carbs are much higher than I would think. What I'm realizing is that I'm taking in around 100 cals and 20 FREAKING CARBS daily just in vitamins!! My Calcium chews (Celebrate bariatric) and chewable Multivitamins (Centrum) are killing me. I would love any suggestions-- do I have to take chewables (I swallow lots of other things in pill/capsule form, not sure if there's something magic about Calcium or multivitamins) and if not, what are people taking that don't have all this sugar?

    Thanks!

  12. Hello everyone I was sleeved on may 7 th with dr garcia. Wonderfull experiance. Now that I'm two weeks out I've lost 18 lbs. Yay. But I'm starting to have a hard time keeping drinks down. I'm fairly new to the area and i was wondering I'd there are physicians here that would take me just for a check up. If any one knows please let me know. Thanks.

    Oklahoma city oklahoma

The best physicians around here are Dr. Broussard and Dr. Walton at WeightWise in Edmond. Their number is 405-359-2473. Hope that helps!

  13. Gentlemen' date=' sorry to spoil the fun, but the powder Room is for ladies only. We ask that you please respect that.

    Thank you.

Sent from my iPad using VST[/quote']

Is this true? We go in the Man Room all the time. That seems like a double standard.

  14. It's amazing how different plans can be... I'm actually not "allowed" to have Protein Shakes after 6 weeks (even though I'm a dirty cheater sometimes because I can't eat 30g worth of Protein in a sitting!). Like all things, I'm sure the real answer is somewhere in the middle. Protein shakes are a good tool to effectively get in a lot of protein bang for calorie buck, but I also think that we're built to get our nutrients from food and should do so when possible.

  15. I started the journey last month and when I met my surgeon he said "what are you thinking?" And I said "sleeve." He just nodded. He didn't tell me why that works for me and now after hearing stories I feel like bypass would be better. I have an issue with sweets and I feel that bypass would help me control it. Its almost like I physically need to feel sick if I eat too much sugar for my body to tell me to stop. Yes I know its a mental game as well. But I feel that I should at least go back to the surgeon and see why he thinks the sleeve is right for me or maybe he thinks the bypass is good too.

You should definitely talk to your surgeon about it. There's a tendency among people who have been successful with weight loss surgery to think their way is the only way but the truth is we all have our own struggles and this is a huge decision you should make with your surgeon taking all of YOUR individual habits and problems into consideration. Best of luck!
