I'm glad I don't live in Texas anymore

If I owned both, I'd live in Texas and rent out heaven!

Wow! That's a GREAT idea! Unfortunately the Republicans refused to allow Medicare Part D providers to negotiate for bulk pricing. The VA is allowed to, but not Medicare. It would decrease the cost of coverage dramatically, but of course, it would also decrease the record profits the drug companies have just posted. And we can't possibly allow that, can we?
  3. Carlene

    Yeah, that's right...

I am going to respect Missy's request that non-Bushies not post here, except that I wanted to give you big, big hugs, Vicki. My youngest son was in Iraq - twice. My daughter-in-law just got back from Afghanistan recently. It was sooooooooooo hard on me. I got a terrible, horrible case of Shingles (first ever in my life) in my MOUTH. It lasted for weeks. My doctor said I should avoid stress. And I would be able to do that HOW?

What are you smoking this morning? Please share with the rest of us so we can enjoy those hallucinations, too.

    Soup Concoctions?

Wow! You must be one homecookin' deprived woman! Too bad you didn't know me pre-band. I used to cook Southern, and that means comfort food. I make fried chicken that is to die for, homemade peach cobbler, yeast rolls, cheesecake, the most wonderful Peanut Butter fudge in the world, German chocolate cake, a pineapple pie that is legendary around here, and coconut meringue pie - all from scratch, of course. Plus more. My middle son claims there is a cooking gene and I got mine from his grandmother. His wife, he says, did not get the gene. To his everlasting sorrow. So he really looks forward to holiday and birthday meals at my house.

    need baby gift

Does she have a baby sling? They are great, lightweight, and fit all your other criteria. Even if she had one with her first child, it's probably well-worn by now.

Kaylee's Mom... I have an 86 year old MIL and a 14 year old granddaughter living with me, plus the DH and a Shih Tzu with issues. Would you like to withdraw your request?
  8. How about the people who read this forum? Are you saying I should not have posted the article because not enough people remember it?
  9. What does this news report say to you? To me it says that the US has thumbed its nose at the UN and the rest of the world. Yeah, we did it. If you don't like it, too bad. Pretty frightening stuff, if you ask me. AFX News Limited US acknowledges torture at Guantanamo; in Iraq, Afghanistan - UN 06.24.2005, 11:37 AM GENEVA (AFX) - Washington has, for the first time, acknowledged to the United Nations that prisoners have been tortured at US detention centres in Guantanamo Bay, as well as Afghanistan and Iraq, a UN source said. The acknowledgement was made in a report submitted to the UN Committee against Torture, said a member of the ten-person panel, speaking on on condition of anonymity. 'They are no longer trying to duck this and have respected their obligation to inform the UN,' the Committee member said. 'They they will have to explain themselves (to the Committee). Nothing should be kept in the dark,' he said. UN sources said this is the first time the world body has received such a frank statement on torture from US authorities.

Canadian Legal Advice - Ontario Law

Sunshine, I have no legal advice for you, as I am neither an attorney nor a Canadian. But I wanted to write and give you big hugs. My DH's niece was punched repeatedly by her husband while SHE was driving (and their two kids were in the backseat) on the Beltway near DC. She was badly bruised, black eye, etc. He didn't do one hour of jail time. In the US, a first time offender almost always gets probation - unless it's murder. I actually know a woman who shot and killed her husband, was tried for manslaughter, and got probation. She served less than 24 hours jail time. That was in Texas. On the other hand, I have another niece by marriage who hired someone to kill her ex-husband (in Georgia). The ex-husband is fine, no attempt was made on his life, but the niece went to prison for 10 years. She got out in about half that, however. Moral is....get good legal representation and more than one opinion. You just can't second guess a jury. And once they bring in a verdict, you can't call "do-overs". Oh, and one more thing....don't loan money to relatives who are at war with their spouse/ex-spouse.

    Soup Concoctions?

I hope you enjoy it. I love it and so does my DH. We have a 14 year old and she thinks she is allergic to anything green, but she loves the potato cheese soup. Be sure to use the broccoli florettes as they have no stems and will blend better, without leaving fibers. And cook them until they are mushy tender.

  13. Nora... Here is the definition of "fanatic", as provided by Encarta... fa·nat·ic [ fə náttik ] noun (plural fa·nat·ics)Definition: 1. extremist: a holder of extreme or irrational enthusiasms or beliefs, especially in religion or politics 2. fan of something: somebody who is very enthusiastic about a pastime or hobby I don't believe that anyone has expressed "extreme or irrational enthusiasm or beliefs" here. The reference to Hitler was not a comparison; it was a reminder. No one wants to believe that what happened in Nazi Germany could ever happen again, and especially not in the USA. We NEED to be reminded of Hitler and all that that implies. I do not seriously believe that George Bush is the anti-Christ, nor does TOM or anyone else posting here. I do believe that he has done great harm to this country, to our standing in the world community, and that he is responsible for the continued loss of American lives in Iraq. And I believe that he is the worst, most unAmerican, most ego-driven, self-serving president in the history of the USA. If that makes me a fanatic, then I guess I'm a fanatic. Better a fanatic than a shrub. In order for evil to flourish, all that is required is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke

I'm glad I don't live in Texas anymore

I read just this morning that Medicare Part D has created a huge windfall for pharmaceutical companies. In spite of that, drug costs have increased 6% over the last 12 months - twice the rate of inflation. George Bush's big push for Part D had zero to do with helping seniors and everything to do with making more money for big business - and not just the pharm industry. It gave all businesses who had contracted to provide continuing drug converage to retiress an out. I don't know of a single one that did not drop their drug coverage for retirees on Medicare. My mother-in-law, who still pays the same premiums for her retiree medical care, even though they no longer provide drug coverage, now has to pay several hundred additional dollars per year for Medicare Part D, and she gets less for her dollar. She worked for Kroger for almost 40 years. It's a shame to do that to people who have been so loyal. The working class are the people who got shafted by Part D. I have since asked all my older Republican friends, "So, what do you think of Bush now?" Lo and behold, once he started getting in their pocket, they didn't like it. Too bad they slept thru the alarm and woke up too late.

  19. I am not saying that Cousin L is a "bad girl", not yet, anyway. But she looks the part and she's only 13. I guess in Texas it's permissible to pierce a child's tongue if the parent is there to give consent. I question the mother's jugment, not the girl's. Every girl her age wants to push that envelope. Most parents don't encourage it, however.

    question for everyone, please answer

I have had both. My doctor used to do blind fills but he won't any longer. He says it leads to overfills and slips.

    Goodbye to Sarah

Sue... I also had a kitty that I couldn't let go of. She was 17 and I spent weeks and lots of $$$ trying to "fix" her - IVs and kitty ICU and labs/tests. It was awful for both of us. I came home on my lunch hour to force feed her, wouldn't go anywhere on the weekend, etc. I envisioned the rest of my life being tethered to this poor sick cat. I should have let Susie go. Like you, I feel guilty and selfish for not ending her suffering, instead of adding to it. I thought about Susie when Sarah got sick. I was not about to make that mistake again. If the vet had told me that Sarah had a better than 50% chance, I would have treated her but he was not very encouraging. And the thought of chemo was too much. I've seen it with people and it's not pretty.

    Goodbye to Sarah

My old friend Sarah died today. She had a huge tumor in her spleen - as big as a football. So we made the very, very painful decision to have her put down. My DH - God bless him - had to take me home after I almost passed out at the vet's office. But he went back and stayed with her to the end. We could have opted for a spleenectomy, an iffy procedure in a dog 14 years old, and then chemo therapy, provided the cancer had not spread. Sarah was not in pain at this time and it was important to me that her quality of life be respected. Best case scenario, the vet said, was probably 6 to 12 months. But the chemo has terrible side effects. It broke my heart, but how could I have done otherwise? I owed it to Sarah to write a better, happier last chapter to her life than that. Goodbye, Sarah - my beautiful yellow Lab and loyal friend.
  23. Betsy... I have a really great CD that explains just about everything there is to know about Catholicism. Would you like me to burn a copy and send it to you?
  24. I'm sorry....I meant to say if you attend Mass every DAY, you will hear the entire Bible every 3 years. I sometimes attend daily Mass, but not always. I should, but I don't.
  25. I don't specifically recall ever those two verses being on my watch. However, if you attend Mass every Sunday you will hear the entire Bible about every three years, so I've heard/read them numerous times. And I would have no problem reading them from the lectern. Just as I could read, with a straight face, the verses about women remaining silent, being subservient to their husbands, the commandment not to eat shellfish, or this one, from the Song of Solomon... Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead. Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them. Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks. Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men. Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense. Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
