Need Motivation!
newat52 replied to hopingtolose2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats on being sleeved! Next step: Hang in there. This week will not be your finest, it will be lots of ups and downs, physically and emotionally but it will get better each and every week! You took the big leap of faith and it will pay off. Don't be a hero. The meds are there for a reason. You won't be on them forever and they really will help this week. Keep sipping and walking! -
ok im preop. but I have this strong desire?
newat52 replied to 1sunnuri's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I did have a big desire but I held off. For the first 6 weeks or so, even though you are losing weight, you are still swollen and looser clothing was more comfortable. As the healing proceeded, it was SO much fun to put on something and one day it was just not wearable any longer. Those are the days you are dancing out of your closet! It really helped when I was in a stall, the scale may not have been moving but the inches were and it has carried my though. Even last night, I have been in an awful stall for almost a month now but dang, another pair of jeans bit the dust! :-) It was one of the last of shopping in my own closet experiences I will have. My huge clothing size range is gone. I'm in new territory now! -
Anyone feel "judged" by medical personell at the hospital?
newat52 replied to Gardengirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Quite the opposite for me. One nurse who had been sleeved 5 months prior was very supportive and told me how much her life has changed for the better. Another mentioned how she thought it was a very brave and positive thing to do. To take control of my health. Every hour when I got up to walk, the nurses at the stations we very encouraging. It helped me more than I could say! -
Sending a big hug your way! Every one of us has had a pity party or two. It comes when we least expect it. It's hard to look at a few weeks without progress on the scale but I did notice that when I was not losing pounds, I did seem to be losing inches during that time. Hang in there, the weight might not come off as fast as we would like but it will come off. I would bet you are so much more healthy than you were pre op and will continue to get even healthier! I will be 18 weeks out tomorrow and 53 pounds gone forever! Not the fastest but it has come off, one stinking pound at a time. It will continue. I know it will. It has no choice as long as I do what I am supposed to. Keep up the good work, have some sugarfree pudding and watch a Bridget Jones movie! Things will look better in the morning!

Has Anyone Managed To Keep Surgery Completely Private?
newat52 replied to bettyboo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband and one of our sons know. That's it. It's nobody's business. -
When I was in first few months of post op and trying to get it all in, I made sugarfree pudding and mixed in Protein powder. I would add a scoop or two of Protein Powder and blend it for a couple of seconds and then add the pudding. Getting the protein from the skim milk and the powder really helped me get those calories and protein up to where it should be. Good luck, it will get better each week. P.S. also try to get in more fluids, you are a bit short on that.

I was self pay. I live the the Dallas area. Happens to be one of the most affordable places to have it done stateside. Also happens to have lots and lots of top WLS surgeons in the country. I am 4 months post surgery with Dr. Nicholson. Total cost was $12,200. All inclusive. All pre op testing, surgical fees, hospital fees for 2 nights. I didn't pay a penny more. This is not the least expensive surgeon in town and not the most expensive but it is a good representation of the self pay cost in the part of the county. As far as was it worth it? Not only yes but HELL YES!! It has changed my life the amazing! I feel so much better and healthier. For me, it's a bargin at twice the price! Good luck making your decision!

Need help with what to tell a few people?
newat52 replied to Taylor06's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What people need to remember is you and your husband don't owe anyone an explanation for anything. Your husband may not be feeling up to going so you don't need to say anything, if he does and someone asks, both of you simply say, he needed to have a medical issue addressed, but he is doing well, thanks for asking and change the subject. If they persist, repeat. People will get the message. During this time, you and your husband need to concentrate on your health. If this is something you would like to keep private, that is your right. If they are friends, they will understand, if they feel they are entitled to know, they are placing their desire to know over your need to have them understand. At that point, I would re think the friendship. Good luck to you both, a very positive and courageous step for both of you! -

I think you will be impressed with him. I am loving my sleeve 4 months out and had a very easy surgery and recovery. I think it speaks to his quality of the surgery he performs. He is also very re assuring, and makes you feel comfortable. -
Dr Nick Nicholson- Dallas, TX

I was self pay with Dr. Nicholson. Worth every penny! I had my choice of facilities, I had mine at Forrest Park~Frisco. The facility is only about a year old and very nice, plus it's only 10 minutes from my home. When you are self pay you don't have to go through any insurance hoops or delays. You can set your date and get going on your pre op diet. Like Ytsepam, I had a drain in the hospital that was removed before I went home and the pain ball went home with me and my hubby took it out, when they told us to, its very easy. I think the best part is no post op leak test, he does it in the OR! Good luck! -
Some surgeons and NUT's say 6 weeks. Some say 6 months and some say never. I would ask your Dr. or NUT. I was allowed after 6 weeks So many different opinions on consumption of things after surgery like wine, coffee and many other things, it goes from you can have in the hospital to never again. Once you are completely healed and are able to take in your right amount of liquids and Protein, most anything should be ok in moderation. Of course, that is my opinion, it may be very different than your Dr. or NUT. Good luck to you!

2years menopause, and just got my "time of the month". Are you kidding me?!
newat52 replied to Djstola's topic in Rants & Raves
You need to see your GYN asap. Post menopausal bleeding is cause for concern to rule out possibilities such as ovarian cancer. Not trying to alarm you but better to have it checked out. -
Welcome to the loser's bench! Best wishes for a speedy recovery! I am 4 months exactly today and 53 pounds gone forever! First few weeks will be challenging but you will feel so much better each week!

Dr David Kim/Dr Bridget Holden

I explored using him but ended up going with Dr. Nicholson. I've not heard anything bad about his practice though. -
has any one else not had success ? :(
newat52 replied to cmt49829's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Very wise advice. Couldn't have said it better. Today is a new day, what happened before doesn't matter. Make it matter for just today. One day at a time. Also, the advice to see a therapist is spot on. You need to discover what is going on in your head. Sending you good wishes and prayers in your journey. -
Yes mam! March 6th! Will be 4 months on Saturday! Best thing I ever did! What day in March was yours?

I wont be sleeved after all.. :'(
newat52 replied to kailie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry. Don't give up! Look at all your options. See if they will take payments. While I am not a fan of payments and debt, I would do it in a minute knowing how much healthier I am at 4 months out. Keep looking for a way. Good luck! -
Love it! Congrats! I am sooo close I can taste it! 3 more pounds to get to 163 and I too, will be overweight and leaving obesehood FOREVER!!!

How did recovery compare to previous surgeries?
newat52 replied to nmck's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My two c-sections (30 and 26 years ago) were harder for me. This was really a walk in the park compared to those. I was much more sore with the kids. For my sleeve, I was up walking 3 hours after I into my room. No nausea, that was my biggest fear and it didn't happen. I sat in a comfy chair all afternoon and evening. I walked laps every hour. That helped more than I can say. Didn't get into the bed till I went to sleep that night. Next morning I was able to go home. I had set my mind to walking as soon as I could as so many people said that would help. They were right. Getting up out of the bed the first time was a doozy but after that, it was quite manageable. Stay ahead of the pain for the first 48 hours with meds, that what's it's there for. Good luck, you will love your sleeve! I'm 4 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat! -
Sending hugs and hoping today is a better day! What you are doing for your health will benefit your children as well.

I have heard that we shouldn't dye our hair for 6 months after surgery - is this true?
newat52 replied to Beachbum2017's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not true at all, we had this discussion several month ago and lots of hairdressers chimed in. They said it doesn't harm the hair at all and in fact will make it seem thicker. I am 4 months out and have mine done every 6 weeks or so. Hair loss may or may not happen, do your best to get your Protein in and take Biotin. -
I am 52 and am 4 months out. I am very pleased thus far with the results. 53 pounds down. 13 was pre op so 40 since surgery. That's 10 pounds per month on average! Others have lost faster but I don't at all consider it slow. I have not lost anything this last month but I am losing inches. I think that at our age, our bodies do take longer to adjust to the loss so it doesn't surprise me that longer adjustment period my be required during this loss. I am hoping any day though to get on the scale it see it moving again. That said, my eating plan that my surgeon and NUT have me on is not low carb. It is just the basic rules of the sleeve, Protein first, veggies and fruits second and carbs last. It is their belief that just eating healthy will achieve the results. I am 2 pounds away from where my NUT wants me to be at 6 months so I am on track for that goal for sure. I also think we are much more patient with the process. We know the weight didn't come on over night and are fine with it taking a while for it to come off. In the meantime, we are all enjoying healthier and more active lives!

newat52 replied to MystiGal's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hang in there ladies, It's going to get sooooo much better! I promise. In a few weeks, you will be feeling and looking like a million bucks. Dr. Nicholson has you taking the first few weeks slow with the liquid diet, it's worth it! The time will fly! -
I take childrens fiber gummies. I pop in one or two about 3 times during the day. It seems to help.

There was someone here a few months back that passed away not long after surgery. I don't recall the specific facts but think it was a blood clot or embolism. It was conveyed by a friend of his. It is very rare, but it does happen. That said, we all hundred times more likely to die from a complication related to being obese. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
