  1. I was just over 37 BMI and am 5'6. I had my sleeve 1/10/2013. I too could loose 45 to fifty pounds on the lo carb diet and DID....several times only to put it back on and more. I decided to have this proceedure....I wanted long term weight loss. I have hi b/p and hi cholesterol so my insurance did pay for this. The sleeve is only a tool in my wt loss journey....I have to do the rest! Good luck

I had a 32 BMI no comordities, no insurance coverage. I tried many times, lost, but only to regain. I wanted a more perm solution. Yes, bad things can happen but 90% have no major complications. I would do it.

  2. You'll be fine. I went completely alone too. I didn't have anyone with me when I went for the surgery and I also didn't have anyone with me for the recovery either and all went well. You might want to have a back-up plan just in case there are complications' date=' but more than likely you won't need the back-up plan. I know it's super scary, but you'll be so happy you did it once everything is done and you're all healed up again. Deep breaths, one step at a time. You can do this!! :)[/quote']

Ditto. I found the staff super helpful and other patients and their companions super friendly and supportive too. It becomes a mini family. You won't feel alone. Plus, you can just focus on you vs chatting with someone when you don't feel like it.

  3. Thank you all for sharing your advice/experiences. Most of the reason I was scared off from the Mexico idea is my dad is an anesthesiologist and he himself does WLS cases just about every week. He is still not 100% on board with me getting surgery in general but it's more comforting to him that I have it here with a surgeon and an anesthesiologist he knows personally. But that's great to know they also do laparoscopic in MX.

Blondie1007 - wow that's so great they helped pay for the removal. I am definitely going to do my reading to see what Aetna would cover. You have certainly come a long way and I feel very inspired hearing from you.

My brother is an anthesiologist and he went to MX for VSG

  4. I'm back at the Marriott now. One weird side effect for me is my eyesight is shot. Distance which is always ok s good, but near is very blurry so hard to read the forums. Doc said that sometimes happens. I'll be able to post more when I an see better!

    ...........,.,,,

Same thing happened to me. It took about 48 hours to resolve.

  5. I went back to work within 6 days of the surgery. I work a pretty high-stress desk job. The first week I pretty much worked my normal 10-12 hour days. But, I would crash as soon as I got back to the hotel. Yeah, I travel to a client site (out of state) for work. Yesterday, I left at 5pm (super early for me), but I was up at 5 am, and went back to the hotel and slept from 6:30 to 4:30. I had to skip a leads meeting that started at 6:15 pm becuase I just couldn't make it. It was a really high stress day. Employee is screwing up left and right and I had to read her the riot act and listen to excuse after excuse.

I am hoping for a better day to today. I am thinking of trying taking B12 twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I am open to any suggestions to beef up my energy late in the afternoon. But, then again, maybe my body just needs rest and I need to listen to it.

  6. What I found very interesting about this article is the number of grams of Protein recommended. My surgeon told me that he did NOT want me eating more than 45-50g of protein a day. I see members here regularly eating 60g, 80g, and over 100g of protein daily.

I told him that I had 60g of Protein One day and he was not very supportive of that at all and told me not to do that. He said at my height (5'3") to be healthy that 45-50 was quite enough.

He also said he did not want me consuming any more protein supplements (shakes) after Jan 1, which was around 14 weeks after surgery).

This article says the same thing. I do not believe everything I read by a long margin (I'm working on my doctorate and research a lot). But I did find it interesting.

My NUT also said to move to "real" foods and wean yourself from Protein Shakes once you get to the full food stage.

  7. I did mine too, good idea for work, but I didn't tell anyone there so....Good luck to all of you! Lets fill the lbs. lost jar!

Just tell them you are on another "diet" and thought this might be helpful way of keeping you motivated. it is true and if you are like me, they are used to being on a diet "of the month".

  8. Concern with using a Mexican facility/surgeon should be centered around the difference in health care standards. Mexico doesn't have the same standards as we do in the US/Canada as far as country wide regulation. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that certain facilities can't have the same standards as we do! The MX practices that are successful are using the same standards as we do, and the people are getting way more for what they are paying for down there. These centers' target customers are people from outside of Mexico. These doctors have to align with the US/Canada standards to be successful! The facilities that aren't up to par, are discussed frequently on this board.

The center that I went to received an Internatioal Center of Excellence, which has to meet the same standards as a Center of Excellence in the United States. There were 2 nurses there getting procedures. Both said that OCC had better care then facilities they have worked at in the United States. And, OCC was cleaner too.

  9. Hi I found this idea online the jar on the left says pounds lost and the jar on the right says pounds to go... Obviously I have a long way to go! Lol I I color coordinated the marbles green for the morbid obesity bmi, blue for obesity, purple for overweight and pink hearts for my healthy weight range. I like it good visual! It's pretty too!

Thank you, I went to Hobbey Lobbey and bought dazzle beads. They were so small I did one for each 2/10 of a lb lost per BMI scale. I made one for my bathroom and one for work.

  10. Just curios, do the costs you are quoted include the hospital costs? Or just the surgeon fee?

The MX prices include hospital / clinic (1-3 nights) and 1-4 nights in a hotel and the shuttles. The number of nights in each of the facilities depends on the group you are going with and what procedure you are getting (revision, VSG, Plication, Lap-band, etc.)

Thus, you can spend the first 3 or so days if you like where someone else is taking care of you and you can spend the time truly relaxing and recouping.
