I saw my endocrinologist today and she pronounced me CURED of my type 2 diabetes as a result of my sleeve surgery! My A1C was 8.1 last fall. I had my surgery Dec. 18. My A1C today (Jan. 31) was 6.5. I have not needed any insulin or Metformin since my surgery. For this reason, my doctor said she considers me cured. The relief is overwhelming!

I found making my own chicken broth was way better than store bought Soup. I can drink it much easier than I can plain Water or Crystal Light. It's not difficult to make. I put two or three whole chickens in a soup pot and cover with cold water. Add about a cup each of chopped carrots, celery and onion. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil and then lower heat to medium. That's it. Just cook for 3-4 hours and it's done. The chicken from the soup can be frozen and used when you're at the pureed stage.

Diabetes for more than 5 years
12345 replied to jsmith100's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 7 weeks post-op and off Metformin and insulin! Perfect blood sugar now. -
Before my surgery, I was told all my pills would have to be crushed. However, the day after my surgery, my surgeon said I would NOT need to crush my pills. So I haven't and I've been fine (I'm 6 weeks post-op). One note: I did substitute my Calcium with a chewable form and my multi-Vitamin with a gummy form. I had already purchased these and didn't want to waste them.

Where and who did your surgery?

I went to Dr. Kevin Krause at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. Great doctor but bears an uncanny resemblance to Niles Crane from Frasier! -
Help, I can't stop eating
12345 replied to shortsleevedkay's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I followed the 2 week pre-op diet. BUT, before that, I did eat a lot of my favorite foods. I will admit there was even a Krispy Kreme drive-thru incident. But since my surgery 6 weeks ago, I have followed the planned diet. I have lost 59 pounds so far but I know Krispy Kremes are NOT in my future and I'm ok with that! -
I think people mean well but it can come off as insensitive. I don't like talking about my private life at work and fortunately, my co-workers have respected that. But I was taken off guard when my boss asked me how many pounds I have lost. (No one at work has directly asked me that.) Then he said I'll need to buy new clothes. He most likely meant well but I took the comment to mean he didn't like my (newly) baggy, baggy clothes!

Needing encouragment / advice
12345 replied to Looking Ahead's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't hesitate to go to the ER again. Or go to your primary care doctor and if you don't get the attention you should, switch doctors. You have to be your own advocate and demand answers. Don't be shy about asking questions. I would also keep a journal and record symptoms and time/day they occur. Log information about doctor visits and tests done as well as test results. Record answers received to your questions. Don't worry right now about weight loss. Your body seems to be under stress. The IV fluids need to leave your system also. Try to drink Water (I know it's hard, I struggle to drink enough as well.) Best wishes to you! -
I keep reading how everyone who has had surgery finds that they are no longer interested in food. That has NOT happened for me. I still find myself obsessing about food and when and what I can eat next. Am I the only one?

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to focus on drinking more water. I'm supposed to drink 64 oz. a day and rarely get that much in. So maybe sipping water more frequently will make me less focused on food.

I had surgery 6 weeks ago.

How many caliries a day postop
12345 replied to Losing weight's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked the nutritionist the same thing this past week. I'm 6 weeks post-op. I'm at around 700-800 calories a day. She said not to worry about the calories. It is more important at this point to get in your protein and drink enough liquids. Good luck to you! -
Seat belt extender for airplane?
12345 replied to kputman09's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
It depends on the airline. Delta, for instance, has longer seatbelts than Spirit Airlines. If you find you need an extender, just ask the flight attendant. It's no big deal and you'll be more comfortable. -
I had my surgery December 18. I was so anxious I took a Xanax! But I can tell you now that I had nothing to worry about! Everything went well. I had no pain, just discomfort which was no big deal. I rested at home for a day. After that, I was fine. I never threw up. No nausea. Incisions healed normally. Diabetes disappeared! I've lost 54 pounds in a month and I couldn't be happier!

The main reason I had the surgery was to try to get rid of my diabetes. Losing weight was a bonus. Prior to surgery, I used to take Metformin as well as insulin 3 times a day. Since my surgery, I'm off Metformin and have not required insulin. However, I wonder if that's because I hardly eat anything (I'm in the soft-food stage). I worry that I'll need insulin once I'm on regular foods. Anyone else out there also a type 2 diabetic? How is your diabetes pot-surgery?

How long did you take off work?
12345 replied to DreamsOfSkinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took off two & 1/2 weeks and I was fine to go back to work. I'm a teacher and I'm on my feet all the time as well as up and down stairs and lots of walking...and I haven't had any problems. As a matter of fact, I noticed it was way easier to go up stairs than before surgery! I have a lot more energy. -
My best purchase would have to be the Magic Bullet blender. It's perfect for mixing shakes and protein drinks.
-
Before the surgery I was ALWAYS hot. Summers were terrible. Air conditioning was my friend! But as soon as I got home from the hospital, I was FREEZING. I cranked the heat up to 75 and my husband thought I was crazy. No complaints here.
-
I, too, was anxious before the surgery. My doctor prescribed Xanax to take the morning of the surgery. That helped a lot.

What happened to your sleep apnea post surgery?
12345 replied to RedCardinal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got my bipap mask / machine about 4 months before surgery. It was set at a super high setting and took awhile to get used to it I had to bring it to the hospital for the surgery. Not sure how that worked since I thought they put a tube down my throat and the bipap covers my nose AND mouth. About two weeks after the surgery, the mask didn't fit my face anymore because of some weight loss. I had to adjust the mask....no complaints there, I was so excited to start losing weight! I'm 4 weeks post-surgery now and can't wait until I don't need a bipap anymore! -
It's hard going back to work and eating lunch with co-workers. Everything they bring looks so good! At a meeting this morning there were trays of Panera bagels and several tubs of cream cheese. I kinda pouted to myself because, of course, I couldn't have any. It is hard. I hope this gets easier.....

NEVER eating a french fry again!
12345 replied to Alicia0022's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was out shopping with my husband and I had forgotten to bring a snack for myself. So I stopped at Sonics and ordered a small side of tator tots. I ate the INSIDES of just three and threw the rest out. I was on day 1 of soft foods and was afraid to eat even that small amount. Next time, I'll bring the right kind of snack with me! -
Mandatory nutritionist visit - REALLY?
12345 replied to linkybo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I laughed out loud when I read the part where you wrote about a lap-bander was asking if she could eat each particular type of fish. I was in a group nutrition class and an annoying man there asked if he could eat yogurt. The nutritionist said,"yes, as long as it doesn't have chunks of fruit of seeds." Then he asked about strawberry yogurt. Then pineapple yogurt. Then raspberry yogurt. I couldn't stand it any longer and got up and left. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! -
Scale obsessed!
12345 replied to sleevinitallbehind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery Dec. 18 and the weight started to come off about a week later. I think the Fluid from the IV had to go away first. Since that time, I've lost 46 pounds. I still find myself eating too fast. I laughed when I read that you use baby spoons because I just bought a set of them yesterday! I hope they help. Good luck to you!
