  1. Hi everyone, as I am goirng through my 2nd week of post op, I cannot help but feel the post-op diet is different for everyone. I have heard one nutritionist will not allow their patients to progress at all, where others will determine how you are tolerating food. What I want to know is what was your post-op diet, were there anythings you were told to avoid any given week, and if your nutritionist would progress you if you were doing well. Here is my post op diet: day 1-3 clear liquids (self explanatory) day 4 to 13 Full liquids Water; Protein Supplement; Carnation Sugar free instant breakfast; Skim or 1% milk, gatorade, crystal light, sugar free cocoa, non-fat greek yogurt, cottage cheese, pudding, riocatta cheese, decaf tea or coffee (and clear liquid items) Day 14 to 30 Pureed Diet scrambled eggs, canned chicken mashed with a fork, fat free refried beens, lentils or split peas, skim or 1% milk, non-fat greek yogurt, apple sauce, blended peaches or pears, mashed banana, mashed potatoes (sweet potatoes), mashed carrots cauliflower or winter squash (but then it goes on to say I can have hamburger Day 31 to 45 Soft Diet boneless skinless chicken or turkey; fish, shellfish, clams, eggs, pork or beef tenerloin, sirloin, flank steak dark meat chicken or turkey, lean ham, canadian bacon, veal, salmon... there is more in terms of veggies, but figured I wouldn't list everything. Let me know if this was your meal plan, or if yours was different, I have noticed a lot in the way of differences with the pre-op diet, just trying to figure out if the post-op is the same way.

    post op diet differences

thank you all for the answers, I guess the post op diet, all the nutritionists pretty much agree with. I am almost 2 weeks out and cant wait until Sunday, I get to have canned chicken and blenderized meats...I cant wait. I really cant wait until soft foods, but one day and step at a time. I have not had any issues so far and everything is agreeing with me!! yay

    Hi I'm new and lost!

I have only told a few select people, my surgery was on 01/21/2013 and I will tell you now the first 3 days you will not want to do anything, I dont want to scare you, walking definately helps, but only if you are able to sleep after ( the hospital I was in had a really rude patient who kept yelling throughout the night,) made me exhausted, then because of lack of sleep and a few other factors, I couldnt even keep the 2 oz of water down. my doc knew exactly what it was and got everythng under control. I did have to spend an extra night in the hospital but was definately for the better, here I am day 5 post op, and I only have a little pain, I am meeting my fluid goals, and found out just how much I love sugar free butterscotch pudding...yum. I am still keeping the buzz about the surgery to a minimum, and cant wait to see some of my friends faces as I continue to lose the weight. Good luck with everything

    April sleevers?

Dont know about april, just had mine done on 01/21/2013, it is a great decision and the end of a 7 month long journey for me. congrats and best wishes on a happy and speedy recovery
  5. Your new life is about to begin I was sleeved on 01/21/2013 so I am only a few days out, it is the best thing I could have done, remember to get all of your fluids in!! that is the most important thing
  6. I had my surgery 12/21 amd I can honestly say Im feeling pretty good...I found that sleeping on the stomach is the best, you cant do it in the hospital, but at home and also lean on a pillow or balled up t shirt helps too, remember to take all your meds and do everything the doctor says, I am working on getting all my fluids in but it is more difficult because you feel like you are drinking all the time, but the sooner you do this the easier it will get. good luck on your surgery, and remember the first few days are the worst, dont gague the rest of your life on it, oh and remember to get some liquid motrin or tyenol, just in case
  7. So my name is Karen and I have been heavy all of my life. I know that obesity runs in my family, that and crippled with the death of my father at a young age as well as my grandmother (who was like a second mother to me)...I turned to food for comfort. Soon I was made fun of in school and became socially akward. Needless to say that food again was my comfort. I did losiabetee a lot of weight my junior year, as I was an exchange student to germany, which boosted my confidence, upped my exercise and completely changed my diet. Upon returning home though everything came back, people can be soo cruel, I had to once again put up with the people who ganged up on me in the past. I quickly gained the weight back, and was once again unhappy. School went by, college flew as I worked full time, went to college full time, helped my mother at home and helped raise my little brother. I had finally gotten out of hating myself, but my love of food did not go away...I loved all of the not so healthy foods, so my weight issue did not go away. I did realize that I needed to eat healthier, and started to do that, I also got a gym membership and went faithfully. Unfortunately in 3 months I saw no change and quickly got discouraged. Years went by, and then in 2007 my mother actually decided to have gastric bypass surgery. She was 320 pounds a size 26 and had type 2 diabetes. I watched in anticipation thinking that perhaps this might be my answer as well. I watched her and saw the issues she had, chicken and many other foods did not agree with her and just putting the food in her mouth quickly sent her to the bathroom. I still watched figuring perhaps things would get better...they didnt, and I watched my mom become a walking skeleton, who then began to judge me and my size. Every comment hurt especially since I was getting married. Flash Forward to May 2012, my husbands friend told us about her experience with the verticle sleeve surgery and how much weight she had lost (she was my size pre-op) Now she is beautiful, skinny and in shape. At this point I was 311 and although happily married, wanted to definately get myself more healthy. I started doing my own research, went to first a support group, then a seminar. Needless to say that July started a diet and 6 months of nutrition classes, a sleep study, upper GI, ultrasound, bloodwork, cardiology work-up, a psych evaluation, and a gall bladder removal, I am less than 3 weeks from my big day. The best part about it though is that I am not doing it alone. My husband is having the surgery the same day! We have eachother to support us and will get in shape together (we got eachother a bike for christmas, have dogs to walk and I will be adding him to my gym membership. In some ways I am nervous about the surgery, and in others, I am so excited. I hope I do half as well as My husbands friend, and cant wait. I know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, but am looking forward to the challenge, and also being able to buy my clothing from the store in the mall where my co-workers shop.

    Pre-Op Fears?

I dont have too much in the way of fear, but I am a little scared of not following the diet totally correctly, or trying to push myself before I am ready. I did a lot of research on surgeons and found one that comes highly recommended, and I have gone through one surgery with him already (gallbladder removal) and had no pain after day 2. he also does internal stitches so the scarring will be minimal if I have any at all. Whatever your fears are, talk to your doctor, your nutritionist and your support group...if you still have the fears, talk to friends or family. The surgery is a huge lifestyle change, embrace it and know that you will be helping yourself to a better healthier and happier you!
  10. my surgery is scheduled for the 21st...start my pre-op diet next week I am soo excited. Good luck to you!!
