  1. I probably spend more time on here than I should, but as I read some of these posts, there are certain words that just simply shouldn't be used...Try working some of these into a normal conversation and see if you don't get a giggle. broth - ever use that word in a conversation? I laugh every time I read "I had some warm broth." I cook for a living, and not once have I ever made broth. Soup, yep, stock yep, broth...uh..no.. Bougie - Didn't even know what this meant, and still don't. (Don't wanna know either) Word shouldn't be used in mixed company. When people start comparing their bougies, I think those posts should be restricted to the men's room forum. Surgerversary - Again, WTF? Can't we use normal english? You had surgery on X date or a year ago I had surgery. I can't go down to the Hallmark store and get you a surgerversary card. Onederland - Where is this place? Is this in Canada? Again, try using that in a normal conversation. I'm sure you'll get some confused looks. Feel free to add your own favorite banned words.... (btw, for all you out there that had your sense of humor removed with your stomachs..this is a little Saturday night levity.)

    Carb counting and fiber...

Yep you can get it at the grocery, typically in the Cereal section. Comes in a jar. Grape nut cereal works too (just thought of that one when I wrote this one) like wheat germ.

    nutritionist with bad advice

Part of what she says makes sense. Eating small amounts like 1/2 cup of food of mostly protein at 3 months makes sense. Your stomach needs time to heal and start functioning normally. Your body has to adjust to eating less and becoming more efficient at burning less energy. Where I get confused here is saying staying mostly on shakes. While in the early goings on, it is a good way to get the protein and some vitamins that you need, but at 3 months you should start a transition to more real foods. At 3 months about 800 kcals would be appropriate working upwards toward your ultimate caloric goal.

    Carb counting and fiber...

Net carbs was a big thing during the Atkin's craze. But in a nutrition sense, a carb is a carb and is converted into sugar. Fiber doesn't offset it. I get fiber a couple of ways. I love wheat germ and use it a couple of time a week. Take a banana spred some PB on it and roll it in wheat germ. Gives a crunchy treat and you get your fiber. The carbs aren't great, but it does the trick. If you are early out though i would wait on that, as it is not a soft food. Also another good thing is Benefiber. I put a tablespoon in a glass of water and it gives you a days worth of fiber. Doesn't have a taste and stirs up clear.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Thanks you are soooo right. It is mental. I am just not in a good place right now. Struggling with a lot. In a stall, pretty much having a pitty party. I'll try again tomorrow, I am sure I will get there at some point. Thanks for the words of encouragement. They mean a lot.
  7. I use real lemons or limes. Cucumbers work well. Green tea is something that I keep in the fridge. Just about any dried fruit can be made into a tea. Mangos, apricots. I drop a few pieces of crystalized ginger in my green tea jar. Really good.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Failed today on Week 6 day 3. Had to take 2 walk breaks during the 25 minute circuit. I think it is a mental thing. I've run two ten minute blocks with a break in between, so I should have been able to knock off the 25. Not a good week for me in a lot of areas, this one was one of many.
  9. At 3 weeks, you should be no where near 1000 calories. Your stomach is still healing and needs some time to be able to properly absorb and digest that number. I was close to 4 months before I got to 1000, and am just new getting to 1100 (barely). I don't worry about stalls. They are going to happen (mostly) regardless. Fiddleman's schedule is pretty close to where I am as well. Your nutritionist should give you a schedule of where you need to be for your particular situation.

    Isopure omg!

Not a fan of the isopures, but if you mix it with some powerade zeros they aren't all that bad, plus you get your fluids in too. Beats pouring them down the drain.
  12. Try for consistency. Target eating 1000-1100 kcals a day for a week or so and keep up the exercise. I'm thinking that you really need to get your metabolism in a good place. I do think that your body is trying to hold on to all the energy it can, and your aren't losing it. Building muscle isn't a bad thing either. Can you check what your body fat % is? Might surprise you. Hang in there and don't freak. It will happen, you just have to outsmart you body a bit.
  13. I'm following my own 2 to 1 plan that my nutritionist has no problem with. I eat 2 grams of protein for every gram of carbs consumed. I don't eat processed carbs ie no white foods or breads, so no pasta, rice or white breads, even whole grain, unless I make it myself, because most food manufacturers lie about what they put into food. Early on, it probably makes sense to eat as slow of carb diet as possible to get the body to burn off some of the stored fat, but ultimately that isn't a good plan long term. But at 6 months out I can pretty much eat what I need as long as it is balanced and of the right proportional size. i am not losing 5 lbs a week and at times will go a week or so with out losing, but that is fine. If the weight comes of slower, the chances for regain are dramatically lower as the body has time to adjust and settle to the new weights. This isn't something that everybody does, and there are hundreds of schools of thought on this. I think what works best for your own situation is what plan you should follow. It is good to get the feedback for comparison though.

    Questions.

Try to relax. There's not a lot you can do to stretch your stomach. The part that stretches has mostly been removed. At this point, your weightloss looks fine, probably better than average. Eating about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of food is pretty much on track. Make sure you are getting your protein in and your water but otherwise it sounds like your are right on track.
  15. johnlatte

    Satisfied with losing slower?

absolutely the right approach. You've done well and it is something that you just have to work at. You'll get to goal. Some us are slow losers no matter what we do. If we stay on track we will get there. Good job!

    Taco Pizza

Looks like a cool recipe. I'm kind curious though. How did you calculate the nutrition on this? (forgive me I am a chef and I am always looking at this stuff). I have app that I use at work and hashed this through it based on your post and got 135 kcals, 9g carbs 5g fat 14g protein and 572 g of sodium for 1/10 of the recipe. Are you saying that a serving is 2/10s of your "pie"? which would make sense looking at the NV. Again just curious, I'm a food science geek and these are things that always appeal to me.
  17. I totally get you! I was in that same place not too long ago. You've been busting it hard for 5 months, and to be honest, you look great. I know you want to see more progress, but the progress you have gotten here is awesome. I know that it is hard, when you see folks that have dropped 100lbs or more in the same time or less than you have been sleeved. That really got to me. But then, with the help of a few of my buds here on the board, I started to realize that I can't compare myself to others. I also started to really understand that I didn't get this way overnight and as much as I wanted to be at my goal weight, if it comes off slow, then the chances of it coming back are greatly reduced. Do I want to wake up tomorrow and be all slim and trim and hot looking, you bet I do, but I wouldn't trade that for building a better, more healthy self. I'm not about to tell you how you should feel. But from where I sit you've done a great job and if you stay with it, you will get to where you want to be. It may take us a little longer, but each day, we get just that much better than we were, and to me, that is what really counts in the end. Stay with it, you are really doing great!

    Bougie Size?

So in this episode of "How the Bougie Turns" We have learned: What a bougie is: That the come in different sizes: That it matters to some people, but to others not so much: Our takeaways today are: We are all here to learn as much as we can and that knowledge should know no bounds: All opinions should be respected regardless if they go counter: Threads often get side tracked on VST: In the end we are all glad that what ever bougie was used, it was used to the betterment of ourselves and our well being. Now, back to our regular scheduled programming

    Lifting restrictions?

I had the same, and stuck to it. The stomach muscle wall needs time to heal or a hernia is a real possibility.

    What made YOU successful?

Its an interesting question. I did have to do a 6 month diet, but never really devoted a lot of effort to it. I've got a good support team. I've only seen my surgeon while I was in the hospital, but I see his PA every month. My nutritionist has been great, but it is getting a little weird between us right now, (long story), so...... I do appreciate her guidance and wisdom though. My PCP has been awesome too. I originally did not loop him in, but since I have, he's been great and we have put together a plan to get me off all the meds that I am/was taking. Outside that, I use myfitness pal to track pretty much everything I eat and all my workouts. I don't follow a specific workout plan, I am using what I did, during my previous weight loss forays. I am currently doing the couch to 5k program to get my running and endurance up to speed. The main thing for me outside the surgery was getting my head around my relationship with food. I am a grazer with stress eating overtones. I needed to learn to recognize the triggers that caused me to go off the rails and eat. I am still working on that, but the sleeve helps me control what I eat to a point. It won't be a magical thing that will immediately drop all the weight and that does discourage some people. BUT if you work on a solid eating plan and make the commitment that lifestyle changes are the best way to be successful, you will do fine.

    Best walking or running shoes?

I wear them as my every day shoe. I don't know if they would make a good running show. They are a bit on the heavy side. They are comfortable for just knocking around, but I don't like running in them.
