  1. I get a similar feeling - and like you, with food not drink. It's possible that it's happening as the type/consistency of food you eat changes. Or maybe it's that signal that your belly is reaching full. I'm about 11 weeks out and still introducing foods - and then removing them again if they don't sit right. Red meat hasn't really factored in my diet yet, mostly white meat and not every day. Vegetarian seems to sit best with me so whilst I try and keep an eye on my protein intake, some days I just eat what feels right. A full stomach is an uncomfortable (and sometimes painful) one for me so I'm learning to pick that moment to stop and not put that one more mouthful in, even if it's within the half cup limit! The type of food has an effect too. I'm feeling a bit adventurous today and thinking about cooking a chicken curry.....I used to eat chilli just about every single day and miss it! fresh fruit and plain yogurt goes down a treat.
  2. Day 2 after surgery was a bit like that for me. Couldn't settle, couldn't lie down, sit up, stand, sleep. Headaches, nausea, general sense of distress that just wouldn't go away. I finally slept (with the help of pain relief meds) for a couple of hours and woke up feeling a little better, since then each day just gets better. I'm now being kind to myself, if I don't progress at the same rate as I think I should, I just try to accept it and adjust to whatever that day brings. I'm pretty much vegetarian at the moment - but I know that meat will re-enter my diet at some point. A friend had similar experience to you in the beginning but is now happy and about 150lb lighter and moving in with his new girlfriend. Hang in there, it does get better. Everyone has put up some great advice here - but take note of Junior Guru's comments re watching your health too so speak to your doctor or nurse. Big hugs and well wishes to you!

    Drinking (Or Not) Liquids

I think it relates to a couple of things (note I said 'think' - just my thoughts) - if you drink too soon after eating, it will just push the food through your stomach too quickly and could impact on the Vitamins your body absorbs. If it's pushing through undigested food, it could also impact on your bowel movements? - if you eat your full quota of food and then add liquid you risk stretching your stomach. This is my main concern at the moment, I haven't just gone through surgery to stretch my stomach at this early stage! There's possibly other reasons and if so, hopefully someone will post them here but hope my thoughts help a little......

Head Challenge! 15 Days Post Op

This site is fantastic because it makes you realise you are not alone! My surgery was 10 October and I'm now at the "mushy food" stage. Like Angel, I too have had moments when I have chewed something for the flavour and then spat out the food - it has helped me but I've tried to keep it to a minimum. I have several nice small cups and bowls and have worked out at what level is 1/2 cup and then just use my eye to measure (I do have a small jug that I sometimes use). I've dragged out my mum's special tea cups and am using them - may as well feel special! My urge to cook has increased - so I cook for family and if possible use part of that for me too (eg veges - and maybe a little gravy for flavour......). meat has been put totally on the back burner for the moment as it just doesn't sit well, but I'll get back to it. My Protein comes from cottage cheese, plain yoghurt, danish feta, mushrooms, eggs, milk - and some good old Protein powder mixed in milk (with a bit of coffee) or fresh vegetable juice. I think the biggest battle has been in my head - I was determined to be the star student and be on track with everything and eating "real food" at around week 4 - HAH! Spending longer in hospital than hoped was probably my first sign that I needed to adapt.... Now I have accepted that my body will adjust at it's own rate. I'm not a bad cook so I'm just making sure there's lots of flavour in whatever I'm eating and as the veges and "softer" Proteins (ie not meat) sit much better with my stomach, I'm happy to go with feeling well rather than feeling overfull, burping, nauseus, hearburn etc - much nicer! Fact of the matter is, I can't fit much in anyway so I want it to be a nice experience. You'll find what sits well with you and when you do, stick with it - we all progress at different rates. When I get cravings either in my head or because I've seen or smelt something, I just imagine how nice it will be when I can eat it. My biggest cravings so far are chilli and champagne! I can't wait!! Good luck in your progress - if you're anything like me, each day you feel just that bit better, and that's a nice feeling!
  5. sorry to hear that. what are the symptoms of a leak? Obvioiusly not too serious or they'd operate to fix it sooner surely? Hope everything goes well - as it will! I think perhaps the longer stay in hospital for us both could relate to our diabetes and longer healing times generally. Stay positive and before you know it, you'll be on the other side.
  6. THANKS SEATTLE! Your comments have rung a bell with me and I'm grateful for you taking the time. Sounds like we have similar situations too. After stressing for a few days about food / Protein intake I have just decided to kick back and take it as it comes - and if it comes a little later than others, so be it! I spent a bit longer in hospital than some so perhaps that was my first sign to go at my own pace. thanks once again. Jo
  7. I'm only 2 1/2 weeks out from surgery but taking big gulps of fluid is the one thing I really miss so I can relate! As vonego82 says, once you've had surgery it won't be a problem, you will only be able to drink little bits at a time, believe me! the smallest amount of food makes me burp - but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! I know I'm still a greenhorn but the best comment I could make at the moment is to follow the guidelines BUT remember that everyone is different. For example, I'm at the "mushy food" stage and have decided to forego meat for now as it just doesn't sit well in my stomach at the moment - so I eat the foods that do and supplement it with other protein foods (yoghurt etc) and then protein powder mixed into fresh fruit/vege juice (watching how much juice you have as it can be high calorie). You will find your own comfort space so trust your instincts. Already I know that I've done the right thing so I wish you well! regards
  8. oh my, I've just discovered the huge list of forum topics -- I could be awhile! )
  9. Hello! I'll try to be brief! I live in North Queensland. Australia and had sleeve surgery on 10 October 2012. The desire to manage my increasingly unmanageable type 2 diabetes put me on this path some 18 months ago. My father died with half a toe, my great grandmother with half a leg - I wanted extra years of life and all my limbs!! Losing weight was an added bonus. On day 5 following surgery I went from 5 tablets a day to TWO - for me, this makes everything worthwhile and I was a bit emotional when this happened, to have such instant improvement in my diabetic body was beyond what I had hoped for. I'm now 3 weeks post surgery and trying to sort out this whole eating thing.... I have abandoned meat for the meantime as it does not sit well with me so I supplement my diet with Protein Powder mixed into fresh fruit and vegetable juices. I know these drinks can be high calorie but I plan to use them in moderation so I can maintain steady weight loss of around 1kg (2.2lb) per week - as recommended by my dietitian. I would be very interested to hear any hints or information that people may have on: - how long do you wait to have a drink once you've eaten? I've heard/read various lengths of time. - people's experiences on how they adjusted to the new eating regime. - how long generally have you taken to begin eating "regular" food (ie, not mashed or pureed) Really, whatever comments you might have would be most welcome. I'm kinda new at this so please excuse any rambling! many thanks
