No, you are not nuts. Don't discount your feelings and you are indeed breaking up with food, but trust me, you will learn that food is NOT your best friend. It is your crutch maybe, but certainly not your best friend. It's what got you to this point, it's what got all of us to this point.. friends don't do that. It's like the old friends don't let friends drive drunk.. LOL (well, I tried! ) Let your husband be supportive as he knows how, you will find if he's supportive now, he will probably be even more so afterwards. Mourn food, it's ok to do that and start a new kind of relationship with it... Accept his support the way he is offering it, it sounds like he's trying. He probably doesn't know exactly what you are going through, how could he? He's not in your shoes..My husband has always been thin too and never struggled with is weight... BUT he saw me struggle, he saw me cry, he saw me hate myself and go up and down for years.... he shared that pain with me and he was there to hold me and remind me that he loves me for me too during those times. That was support! I was sleved 11/15 and I was very scared, but I'm doing great and I am glad I did it. Hopefully you will too. Feel free to reach out anytime for support, there is a lot of support here that was given to me and I'm happy to give it to you as well! Hang in there!! So just a quick question, if you can't take pills for a while, how do you take your required prescriptions that are pills?? I have about 5 that I take now! Most are small, but still.... Just curious!

Oh wow, I didn't realize this kind of surgery was used for other treament options. I guess it makes sense for cancer, but it never dawned on me for ulcers too. That does make me feel better too. @Foxbins, you stated " It's different than an RNY bypass, much more malabsorption and a tricky surgery to perform."...Not sure if you meant the sleevel or the RNY was more difficult to perform?? I always thought he RNY was worse?

Thats a good idea of writing a list as to why you should have the surgery and why you shouldn't and you are right, I bet the list as to why I should have it will be longer than the list as to why I shouldn't! Most of why I shouldn't would be fears, most of why I should would be valid health reasons. My problem is a double edged sword.. I have 2.5 months to research and talk to folks who have had or are planning for it like here on the boards but the also I have 2.5 months to over analyze everything and drive myself nuts!! LOL

@JamesHRN, how is your friend doing 5 years out? Any complications or concerns?? Thanks everyone for your replies, it's basically a fear of the unknown because long term effects beyond I guess 5 years aren't really known... it's the "WHAT IF" that plays out in my mind. I know I need to do this, but wow, it's a scary step to take... having 3 kids I always worry about the What IF... SIGH

I didn't relaize that it was that new. I thought it was used as a bridge for folks to get to have the Bypass for years and then it was realized that it was a good stand alone option as well! Either way, any input folks can add about how they are doing 2-3 yrs out is greatly appreciated!

Hi! I'm going to be getting sleeved in November and like many of us here, I have concerns and fears. I think about it constantly, but know that I've exhausted all options to try and lose and maintain but I have failed miserably. PCOS doesn't help this one bit. I wanted to hear from some of you who have had the surgery over a year ago. Since this surgery is fairly new comparied to Bypass or the band, long term effects really aren't well known. I'd like to hear how folks are doing 2, 3, 5, 10+ years out. Any complications? Anything come up that you didn't expect? Since this is so permanent, and 85% of your stomach is gone, that is quite scary to me. How does your body react? Does something happen years down the road? For example, I know now that folks are finding a lot of problems with the band and many doctors aren't doing it anymore. So things like that. Just looking I guess for affirmation that this is the right decision and long term, I will be ok! Thanks so much! Karen

Would love to connect with folks who are having surgery around the same time so we can help each other through it! I know for me, I'm 2.5 months out and still a nervous wreck! WOW that is a wonderful benefit and a great opportunity that is give to folks having WLS and have that kind of coverage! I definitely will need to get a tummy tuck, lipo and something done with these arms of mine, but that will all be out of pocket and not covered so I'll probably have to wait a bit to get it all done after I reach goal. You are very lucky to have such a wonderful benefit! Your date is coming up soon, you must be very excited!

OMG YES!!! I feel just the same way you do and I'm also scheduled for surgery in November... I run through all the "what if's" in my mind every single day, multiple times a day! I know I've tried EVERY single diet out there and it always comes back on and I'm not even a junk food or carb eater! It's the PCOS I have making it impossible to lose the weight. I too feel like this is my ONLY option to get healthy, but I fear it will stop working and the weight will pile back on. I have 3 kids, I go back and forth on what if something happens during surgery... but like everyone here has said.. nothing else has worked and I feel I've exhausted all other options, this is the only thing left to try. I will probably have second thoughts until the moment they put me out for the surgery. My brain never shuts off ever.. and I think and re-think and analyze and re-analyze until I make myself nuts! We are all in this together so I'm trusting that this is the best and only option for me... even with the second thoughts!

Hi! I work in HR and it is a Federal Requirement/Law that you have to be employed by that specific employer for 12 months and have worked 1250 hours to be eligible for the FMLA portion of a leave. SInce your company offers you 6 weeks of STD, normally, you should be job protected while on STD. If you moved to LTD then they can probably replace you if there was a business need. Additionally, if you reach your 1 year mark anytime during your STD, you then become eligible for FMLA. If you reached your 1 year mark 2 months after your surgery, you then become eligible and could take it if you were still having recovery needs and issues requiring you not to work. Good luck! I know the rules and red tape are such a PIA!
