I have had increasing health issues over the last few years including diabetes, hypertension and sleep obstruction issues. When I applied to health insurance for a lap band I was denied two times because I've been controlling my diabetes with exercise and diet. I thought I'd never get approved. A few months later I had problems with my joints and severe pain (bursitis and arthritis - I"m only 47 (!). One of my doctors put me on steroids which I was not happy to take because the last time I did I gained 100 pounds. Well, I did gain some weight and came a few pounds close to hitting the "severely obese" weight that would qualify me for bariatric surgery. I decided to gain a few pounds to try to hit the weight and eeked through with a 40.2 BMI. The day I weighed in I went on a diet thinking I'd never get approved. I did!!!!!!! By the time I went to my pre-op check in I was down to 240. Two weeks later and on the full liquid diet I weighed in at 225 for surgery. In the hospital my diabetes peaked. I was on insulin every six hours. Since them I'm off all medications for diabetes.

Update one year from surgery... my blood work is better than it has been in over 20 years. I had cancer in my twenties and my blood work never returned to normal after two years of treatment. The last eight years i have had abnormal liver counts.... today ALL, EVERY SINGLE BLOOD COUNT IS NORMAL. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has absolutely been the best thing I've ever done for myself. Quite the journey to get here but I fell great, I eat well, I'm more active than ever before and I look awesome!!!!!!
