  1. Here are all the weird things I never knew I would be grateful for 1 week out: Refried beans! OMG! I advanced myself two days early I just couldn't take liquids any longer! Pooping! I definately took that for granted before surgery. I can't have chia seeds yet so I'm trying Ducolax. Naps! Normally I am not a napper but laying down and getting proper rest is really helping. That incentive spirometer! Coughing hurts but being out of breath is worse. I'm using that thing every day! How about you? What little things are you grateful for?
  2. WLS is not first date material. I agree with and activity date. I love mini golf, it's fun and not too strenuous. If you combine that with a light bite to eat I think you'll get by. Personally, I think drinking on a first date is a slippery slope anyway even before surgery. I've seen people get trashed on dates and there is definately no second date after that! Since you probably don't know him that well, stay sober and in control, stick with water with lemon or lime. Most importantly, have fun!
  3. I completely relate. I bought some Pacific organic, low sodium broth and it was terrible. Smelled god awful. Trying Unjury chicken flavor later today, hoping that is better.

    Pork Rinds?

Pork rinds don't have to be unhealthy. I read about these, never tried them but they are lower in fat that store brands. http://www.microwaveporkrinds.com/nutrition.asp
  5. I started thining my protien shake with water today too and it is helping. Go slow and I can honestly now finally agree that it does get better.

    very disappointed

For some, DS may be a better option. Has your surgeon talked to you about that at all?

    very emotional lately

Which I should add, my crying only makes him worry more.

    very emotional lately

Sorry to hear about that! What a bummer!. I get extremely weepy around my DH. He is out of town on business- this is our norm but right now I cry each time I see him. Especially because he is so worried about me.
  9. I am there with you. I am so excited about food and it smells really good but I don't want any. I get to have purees at the end of this week and I bought a bunch of groceries even though I know much of it may not get used! The brain really is weird.

    Hurt to swallow?

All of the above explianations make sense. Also, if I take too large of swallow I have pain in my chest. I am a terrible sipper.
  11. Grandma's generally like us all covered up. If that's your grammy, go with the cream top. Otherwise, my vote is the dress.
  12. Just a quick caveat. Walking right after surgery will be a bit harder in the beginning. Besides being sore, I got out of breath easily. At first I just went to the corner and back. Now I'm walking up and down the neighborhood. I can feel my circulation and breathing capacity improve with each walk. Keep plugging away at it, it gets easier with time.
  13. My hospital uses a 1-10 pain scale for patients to describe their pain. Once in recovery my pain was a 10 . By the time they rolled me to my room, I was at a 7. Most of the time I was in my room I bounced between a 4 and a 2. At one point I let me pain get ahead of me and was at a 7 again. After that I timed my meds so that I went for walks or potty trips after meds were given. That way I was able to move around a lot more than many of my counterparts.
  14. Great job! Congratulations. Your beautiful baby looks like the perfect motivation to get healthy. Way to go!
  15. How soon after surgery did you start to apply it? I won't get my steri strips removed until 3/7. Is that too far out? Date of surgery 2/20.
  16. I am 5 days post op and I only eat because I have to. I do get thirsty but I have yet to be hungry. It is surreal.
  17. I was the same way as above. I am 5 days post op and I took my first shower 100% alone today. Was able to get in and out of bed on my own yesterday, it hurts some but I can do it, using my arm and leg muscles. I was able to put my own sock on as of today. I still cannot bend over to pick anything up off the floor. Slide in shoes are my friend. As far as in the hospital, you won't need any extra help. The nurses and staff help you as much as needed and if you wear the gown all the time it makes potty time much easier. Adjust the bed to help you get in and out of it.
  18. I know sip, sip, sip. However, old habits die hard and I keep taking normal swallows. They hurt about midchest. Am I hurting my sleeve? I don't want to damage anything, I just can't remember all of the time to just sip.
  19. What are the reprecussions of cancelling the day before if you still haven't heard? Do they charge you a fee? Like others, my Dr.'s office wouldn't even schedule me until they got a copy of my approval letter. If you do this prior to approval, are you willing to cash pay? I would call the insurance company directly to find out what stage it is in. You are always your best advocate, so go get 'em! Good luck.

    I dont want anything!

I agree with the other posters that you have to make yourself eat but I totally understand food holds no interest for me at this point. I am starting to hate my Protein shakes. Bleh! So far I only like a bit of yogurt and apple sauce. I'm trying to make myself excited about more savory foods but they grow cold before I can even finish them. I would be happy just drinking Water all day. A few sleevers have talked about heavily seasoning food, you might try making your food more flavorful with spices to see if that helps. Good luck.

    Pain after surgery

It's surgery, you will have some pain. For me, I had trouble getting in bed by myself the first few days. My pain is localized to one specific area where the doctor sutured the muscle. However staying up on my pain meds helps. Walking helps with the general gas pain. If possible, have a friend or family member stay with you for the first few days. You will not be able to lift your children for several weeks. Best of luck.
  22. Good luck to all of today's sleevers!

    weak as a kitten

My surgery was last week as well. I just walked about a quarter to a third of a mile and I am pooped. In fact I'm laying down resting as I type this. I am struggling to get my liquids in. (My nut puts us on full liquids as soon as we get home). I think it's all normal. If you are staying on top of your pain, walking and resting every few hours and staying hydrated. You ARE doing everything you can- we have to give ourselves time to heal.
