  1. My sleep has not been restful or long enough. I have been up all day, 7am to sometimes 1am. And a lot of times I wake up once in between. A lot of my dreams center around fear and doubt but nothing that I specifically remember. It's like when I try to rest my brain is not getting the signal. Also I've been a bit of an emotional mess, highs and lows more than once throughout the day. I really hope it evens out because I am actually tired and would like to sleep.

Post Op 6 Days and Feeling Vulnerable

Thanks, I know ultimately it was the right decision but its hard knowing you can't go back. I'm not far enough forward to know how that feels. Just going to give it time.
  3. Wow grats on getting there sooner! They gave me torodal and reglin (yeah spelling?). These helped with inflammation and started to calm down my gi tract. I expected a sore throat like bronchitis and instead had spasms. I can't tell you what to be prepared for but I think you'll be ok. I dont think my experience is exactly the norm but its not uncommon. I'm much closer to myself today and even if you do have trouble, 4 days will show signification improvement. Good luck! Oh and dilaudid helped me a lot more than the morphine, so don't be afraid to ask for a different med if the one isn't working for you.

    I Nearly Missed It Today

I walked the dogs just now, noticed the mail on the washer on my way out. It was an envelope from aetna.....my letter of appeal has been approved. I'm so relieved.
  5. Hi- you are totally not alone ginamaria! I was the same way. The closer it got, the more scared i was of losing everything that I know about coping (with food). It's totally normal! It didn't hit me hard til after and I cried a few times (this coming from a person who hasn't cried in 8 years). I'm expecting to cry some more and start learning how to forgive myself for being weak sometimes and making better choices from here on out. I want to remember this time of my life as the moment that I turned the corner from just existing to fully experiencing life. Very best luck with your surgery!
  6. I believe you might have been . They did a hernia repair on me yes. It's what sent my throat, from opening to stomach, into horrendous spasms. I'm doing lightyears better than I was. Oddly, when I go from a sitting/reclining position to a standing position I start getting the spasms again but they're NOTHING like what they were. Makes waking up a b*tch though....
  7. Good Luck Ith11! It's going to be ok, nerves are just a part of the whole deal. Wish you the best recovery!
  8. anyone post op been foaming? I swear I'm spitting all the time because I simply can't keep swallowing the foamy spit. I assume this is normal. If and when does it go away?
  9. Its only been a couple days, but, my focus on food has transferred to liquids. It's just such a fight to get the amount of liquids you need in, there's not much room to think about anything else because it takes so long to get the necessary amount in. I don't feel hungry but I dont feel full, I don't really feel anything in my stomach right now except gurgling. For the first time in my life it's just a body part of mine.

    The dam broke...

I broke yesterday when they told me i could go home. the whole thing had just been too much. They usually keep sleeves 2 days. I expected to leave around Thursday night or friday morning. When that came and went, I just didn't have any ideas. From the boredom and fear and pain, I just started sobbing catching my totally off guard from all of it. I look back and wonder if I just controlled any unpleasant emotions with the food and now that I dont have it, it comes out in tears.
  11. uhh...farting is usually not an entirely dry event....just you know...from experience. if it doesn't hurt to burp I'd take the burping.
  12. i froze my butt off too! All they give you are these weak little sheets folded over 4 times...the windows in the hospital were drafty and the arm chair i slept in was close to those windows. Half way through i started closing my door. The hardest part was that there was simply nothing to do other than watch tv. I tried my tablet and watched a few of the movies of my choice there but there weren't enough distractions from the pain of recuperation. Absolutely bring a pillow. I had an extended stay and I thanked my lucky stars I brought baby wipes. Nothing like smelling 4 days old when you already feel like crap. Also bring either slippers or socks w/ grippies for the walking down the hall. They told me to bring a robe did not work for me. I had 3 IV's going in me so the long sleeves are a no go.
  13. Thanks, I'm home now, feeling a lot better. Spasms aren't gone but they're going away. I think I did 25ish ounces today. Hoping that I continue to improve at this rate so i can get back to work.

    I'm not telling.

i mainly kept that I've had surgery to myself. Not because I don't want to tell people but because I don't need food Nazis. -edit Does this puppy look like she needs a food Nazi?

    Pain when drinking

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I had the spasms all the way up and down my throat ever since the surgery. It's a real quick way of making you never want a sip of anything ever again. It was so bad it would cause my stomach to heave. It was terrible. I had my surgery on the 5th and I'm still getting them. BUT they're less and less frequent and intense. I don't really feel pain from the tubes they put down my throat but they must have really done a number on it because the spasms are just god awful. I'm supposed to go back Tuesday after next, really hoping to feel a lot better than this by then.
  16. I know it currently doesn't sound like it but your lucky. My dr is EXTREMELY conservative about the food transitions. 10 days clear after surgery, then 6 weeks of protein shakes, then 1 week each of progressively chewier foods. This is the hardest part for me. As for other stuff preop: vitamins for the rest of my life, a little card that says "HEY NO NG TUBE something something i forget" no pork or beef for 6 months...personally I might do beef sooner if it was like filet Mignon (as it's tender) but still i'm talking like 4-5 months out...I mean if we're eating a grand total of 2-4 ounces of beef, hey that's kind of an actual dinner sized portion at ye olde steak house and I'd look relatively normal eating it w/ everyone else. For me, having planned this whole thing since May of last year, I still feel relatively unprepared for the changes even after the surgery. I had a longer recovery slightly. Things still hurt and my throat was just ravaged between the bougie and the anesthesia tubing and what not. I had full on spasms that when from the top of my stomach to the top of my throat that made me never want to put anything down there ever again. I also came home and looked at my feet. Which are swelled. I got on the scale because I just couldn't figure out how that could happen and what do you know 20lbs heavier...probably all water. I'm babbling. I know. I can't help it. I got home from the hospital today and I'm kind of all over the place. They told me I could go home and burst into tears in front of my mom who was as usual completely unprepared for it. Right now I'm back at my pc and feeling more like myself than I have since Tuesday. I might be ok after all!

    6 months post op

I had surgery on the 5th and it's been bumpy. Thanks so much for posting, it gives me a hope that I didn't make a tremendous error. Once you got back on to solid foods did things improve? Do you still enjoy food? You look fantastic
  18. It might be something w the deductible and max out of pocket. I have Aetna. $1000 deductible and $2500 max out of pocket. I was told to add them together to get the max I pay. Since I already had a few expenses that qualified as my deductible, I'm expecting somewhere around $3000 total. Now. If the bill comes and I'm in for more. I'm not going to be happy and they're getting a phone call.
  19. I'm going home today. The stay at the hospital has not been pleasant. Never really got restful sleep. And the complications w swallowing made things a bit miserable. I'm off the iv. Its all up to me and that's helped push additional liquids. I'm a little light headed and when I get home I'm allowed to have some water w juice. Really looking forward to having something other than this to occupy my attention. I'm in the what was I thinking stage. I'm sure it will pass. Thanks for the prayers. They worked.
  20. I had my surgery on the 5th. I'm still in the hospital. Im having an issue w spasms in my throat making it difficult to drink. First day out I took maybe 3 tablespoons of water. Yesterday I got in about 10 ounces. They think w a little more help today I can go home tomorrow morning. I'm scared about going home and being nauseous and.or not getting my fluids in. Really wish that pain would go away
  21. So it turns out I had a small hiatal hernia that they repaired. Its leaving me feeling like I can't drink water properly. I keep being air in and trying to burp the pain away. Still have a lot of bloating. Really need more walking.
