    how many carbs???

My doctor says no more than 50 a day, but truthfully, when I focus on protein I hit about 30 - 35 a day.

    I'm scared

What you are feeling is very normal. I had my surgery on 7/18 and I can honestly say, I would absolutely do it over again. I absolutely have no regrets. This is the best think I have ever done for myself. My confidence has soared, I feel better and I am enjoying the way my body is changing. Be good to yourself and remember that what you are feeling is normal. It gets better
  3. You sound great. Good for you! Keep it up.

    scared....

It sounds like you have "buyers remorse" which is perfectly normal and many of us have them. I had mine for a day or two after surgery and kept thinking, "I cannot believe I did this to my body." And yes, it is not reversible, but I really cannot find too many people who have had their by-pass reversed, and most people who have the band continue with it or eventually go to the by-pass. As another post said, the sleeve is only new for weight loss, surgeries like it have been used for many years and all the studies so there are no long term dangers. Focus on the good things that are happening to you and to your body. Enjoy the feeling you have when you get on the scale and the numbers keep going down. Or how you feel when your cloths fit, get loose or you have to go to a smaller size. You will not always have these feelings. They are part of the process. You will get to a point when you will feel great about your decision and maybe even wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Good luck

    how the heck????

I had my surgery on 7/18 and I am just now getting to the point where I can get my protein and water in. Although I felt better and better each day, around week 5-6 there has been a huge difference. I can get the water in, get most of the protein in and have absolutely no soreness, not even a little. Take it one day at a time. You will get there.
  6. I use a starbucks big plastic cup with a straw. I can get the water down better with a straw for some reason, lots of ice too.
  7. It does get easier. The beginning can be difficult, it was for me. I was sleeved on July 18, six weeks ago today. I can eat so much more now than in the beginning and it seems so much easier now. I had two weeks of liquid, 2 weeks of mushies, and now I was told to experiment, take small bite, and chew, chew, chew. I even had a small piece of cheese pizza last week. It took me 45 minutes to eat it, but it tasted great and absolutely no problems. Now, I know, I can't eat pizza all the time, but once in awhile will not hurt. You will get there before you know it.

Having a really hard time today

You are doing great. It may not seem like it now, but believe me you are. You had to deal with a lot and YOU DID. You handled each unpleasant circumstance that came up and you got through it all. The liquid stage can be hard but it will be over soon. I was sleeved on July 18th. Each day gets better and better. Remember to sip all day. In that heat, you can become dehydrated very quickly, so sip, sip, sip. Can you take bottled water into the sessions? That might help when going into the heat. Remember to be good to yourself when you can. It does get better and before you know it, you will be able over the liquids and on to the next. Its a process and you seem to be doing great, even if you don't feel like it right now.
  9. My doctor told me tylenol only. I was sleeved on July 18 and have had to take it several times since then for both headache and cramps. Funny, but now, I only have to take one and that seems to do the trick. Good Luck

Told a patient I had a VSG today....

I think sharing your experience is fine. I was fortunate because my GP was very supportive when I asked her about WLS. Also, when I was going for pre tests before surgery, several of the nurses shared their stories, either personal or that of friends and I was very appreciate of the positive input, especially since I didnt tell too many people before surgery. I know this is a little different since I had already decided to have the surgery, but I think what you did was a good thing no matter when, in the process, you did it.
  11. I was sleeved on July 18th and when I was on "muchies" my doctor told me I could eat chicken salad and tuna salad without being pureed. I also had refried beans and hummus. Egg salad was also a good thing too. Now, I can eat almost anything and I still eat the things above. If you have any questions though, check with your doc.

    Post Op pain

I had very little pain after... a lot of discomfort from the gas but very little pain. I took pain med only twice and the second time was more so I could sleep better the second night. My larger incision was sore and I used a pillow to "splint" it when I got up form the sofa or out of bed. I had my surgery on July 18 and it is still tender at times, but not painful. I did not have a pre op diet. I ate what every I wanted up to a few days before the surgery. I had my appendix out when I was 18 and at that time it was a major surgery and a huge incision... 5 day hospital stay. That was bad this was nothing in comparison. I had my surgery at 9:30 am and was released from the hospital at 3:30 pm....home on the same day. I am 48l
  13. I take gummy vitamins and gummy calcium

    BIG secret... good or bad?

Everyone is different. Some tell and some don't. Do what feels best for you. Before surgery I told only two people. After surgery, I told my immediate family. Personally, I don't feel the need to tell anyone else but that doesn't mean I wont at another date. Take it one day at a time and remember do what feel best for you. Good Luck.
  15. My sleeve was an out patient procedure. Surgery was as 9:30 am and I was discharged at 3:30 pm. There was no real pain but discomfort from the gas and some soreness for about 3-4 days. I only took 1 pain pill the night of surgery and did not need any after that. Each day I felt better and better. My sleeve was done on July 18 and I feel great. Good luck on your journey.
  16. I was allowed to take pills the day of surgery. I had my surgery at 9:30 am and went home at 3:30 PM. I sent home with pain pills and was told I could resume my regular prescriptions as long as I spread them out. It hasn't been a problem so far.... 15 days out.

    Eating Slowly

I just started "mushy" food, so I'm new at the chewing part, but was has been working for me is timing what I eat. I know someone else posted this but I actually look at the clock and set a time that I will take the next bite. It sounds crazy but it has worked so far.
  18. I had my sleeve done on July 19 and yes, the gas was very uncomfortable. I walked as much as possible, took GasX, and had my hubby rub my back. It takes time but it does get better every day. Once you can pass the gas, one way or the other, it helps.

    Lemonade tasting protein?

Proti 15 has a lemonade flavor. It has 15g of protein and 70 calories. It is the only protein drink I can handle. I cannot stand the others. However, it does help me to add ice to the vanilla or the choc protein drinks to make a slushy. Somehow, I can get it down better and the choc almost tastes like choc ice cream.
  20. I had my surgery 12 days ago on the 18th. It is normal to feel nervous before you have your surgery but you will find it is more the fear of the unknown than the actual surgery. For me, and yes, everyone is different, the worst part was the gas pain after surgery. It wasn't horrible, but uncomfortable. Walking did help, Gas X helped a little and having my back rubbed helped too ( normally, I hate my back rubbed but it felt so good after the surgery). You will find that everyday gets better and better. I found that even from the morning when I woke up to the evening when I went to bed there was improvements. The discomfort is not too bad and it is over pretty quickly. I did have dry heaves a few times but it really was not too bad and I only took pain medication once or twice after the surgery. For me the incisions were not sore or painful, except the larger one ( about an Inch) and I really cant say it was painful, just sore. You will be fine just keep reading the post here and keep getting the positive support you need. Before surgery I surrounded myself with people who only agreed it was a good idea for me to do this and I refrained from telling anyone who I thought wouldn't support me. Good luck!

    Recliner or couch?

I have both in my living room and I never used the recliner. I found that the couch with several pillows did the trick for me. I could get comfy more easily by readjusting the pillows. I also positioned myself between the back of the sofa and pillows to support myself ( after a few days). The was so comfy.

    Hospital Stay

I had my surgery on July 18th at 9:30 (second patient of the day). I was released the same day at 3:30. My doctor had told me all along that it would be out patient and I have to admit it freaked me out a bit, even the day of the surgery I was wondering how it was possible to be going home. In hind sight, everything was fine and I am happy that I came home. The only thing that was a little difficult was that I was soooo tired but once I got home, I was really glad to be there and I don't think staying in the hospital would have made any difference. You will be fine and the doctors and staff will take good care of you. Good luck
  24. I had my surgery on July 18th and the same thing happened to me. It sounds like it is completely normal. For me, it only lasted a day or so and I found that it helped when I drank very small sips and sitting up. Even if I was on a slight incline, I felt the pain. I am now 6 days out and can drink cold or warm liquids with very little problems. I think it all gets better, just hang in there and keep drinking so you stay hydrated.
  25. My surgery is Monday and these boards have been sooo helpful....was reading about your stomach pain, my Dr. prescribed Pepcid for 2 months just as a precaution. I start the day of surgery.... good luck and keep up the great input. It is so helpful.
