    Returning to work

I was planning to take only a week. Since I don't have a physically demanding job, the doctor okayed it. I decided to take two weeks after all, and I'm glad I did. Because I caught a terrible cold the day of surgery. I was miserable until about day 9. On day 11 I was back to my happy self. In that first week and a half your tummy is very confused and rumbly, it is hard to drink and stay hydrated, so you may be tired. You will probably still be sore at the incision site. But you know you better than anyone else. If you're a trooper, you can do it, barring even the smallest complication like a cold. And what a coincidence, my BFF was against my vsg too. But, she is someone who is afraid of surgery in the first place. All you can do is listen to everyone's opinions/advice and then make up your own mind. I wish you the best!

    Food Porn

Madison, I can totally relate. All I think about is chili cheese dogs, morning noon and night. It has become an obsession. The only thing that takes my mind off chili cheese dogs, is when a commercial comes on tv that shows a different type of food. Or if I watch cupcake wars on the food channel!! (I stayed away from the tv today, maybe because I didn't want anything to interrupt my chili cheese dog fantasies...hahahaha!!) I start pureed food tomorrow, so maybe I'll snap out of it. Lord help me!!!
  3. Congrats to you! I can only imagine how great that feels. I have not been under 200 since high school. I'm at 220 right now and it still seems hard to believe I will get to be 199. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
  4. I'm assuming you'll be on protein-based liquids for at least two weeks after surgery like I was. And since all you can have is liquids, I would get a wide variety...a little bit of everything so to speak. My Protein powder came in chocolate, strawberry and banana...but I would've gotten more vanilla so that I could add different Torani SF Syrups...caramel or black cherry sound good right about now. Or adding some instant decaf coffee for a latte-type drink sounds good. Also get a few different flavors of cream Soup and broth. I was allowed yogurt; and I finally broke down and bought some Crystal Lite. I have never liked Crystal lite, but it is helping me get more Water down. Since nothing but liquids gets so boring, I think more variety of flavors would make you feel like you're having something new. I start pureed food tomorrow....I'm counting the hours! Maybe I'll start at midnight...just kidding!! Also I would make sure to ask what type of OTC medications you can take at home. Pain relievers, antacids, etc. I caught a cold and was happy that I knew what cold medicine I was allowed to take. I didn't need to take anything to the hospital, they were very attentive, and I guess I am a pretty low maintenance type of gal. But KathyD49 is right, take comfortable shoes to go home in and don't wear clothing that is snug at your waist. I hope this helps!
  5. Yes, I went and bought some Prilosec yesterday and feel much better today.

    getting ready

I had my vsg 2 weeks ago and I already feel better. The first week was tough, but it gets better fast. I now finally feel like I have a real chance at getting this weight issue under control. I wish you the best on your journey, and with this web site you know you won't be going-it alone!
  7. Hellodolly, I had my vsg on 6/6, I'm pretty new to this site as well. I have found this site extremely helpful and I'm sure you will too. It's nice to know we are not alone on this journey. Since May 23rd (the start of my pre op diet) I've lost 20 lbs and it feels great already. Good luck to you and keep posting!
  8. Your experience sounds pretty similar to mine. I think my worst days were about days 4 thru 7 post op. I was also fighting a cold at the time. By day 10 I was my awesome self again! I'm still struggling to get in as much water as possible and my stomach is less rumbly as long as I "eat" very slowly.

4th of July - WHAT WILL YOU WEIGH???

Woohoo! I'm at the 20 lbs lost mark!
  11. I'm 12 days out. A week ago I was still getting only about 16 oz and worried about it. I was definitely getting dehydrated. With the wise advice of many people on the site, I up'd it to 32 oz a day and am feeling so much better. It has given me more energy too. Do the sip sip sip all day as everyone suggests, it works, gulping just gives me uncomfortable air bubbles. I'm trying to up my number to 48oz tomorrow. I was drinking straight H2O, but went and bought some Crystal Light today to see if that helps me get it down. Good luck to you!
  12. Hi Pagie, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer in Dec 2008. I went thru surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. By January 2010 I took off my wig and thought I'd feel good again. Throughout my ordeal I had a lot of friends and family supporting me, I am very blessed in that regard. They would always ask: how are you now?, is everything ok?, how are you feeling?, are you healthy now? And at the end of all the he|| I went through, I COULD NOT HONESTLY SAY YES, I am fine now. Because I was still 100 pounds overweight with diabetes out of control. I couldn't believe i fought cancer and felt even worse than before. So that was it, I made the decision. The best reason for having this surgery is for your health, I'm just at the beginning of this new journey, so time will tell...but what I do know is that my fat-related health problems were doing nothing but getting worse as time went on.
  13. I'm on my 12th day since surgery. I am drinking just over 32 oz at this point. It is hard to get it down, I feel a big lump in my throat and then hopefully I burp! Sipping throughout the day is going to have to become a new habit for me.

    OUCH!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!

I'm no doctor, but I've read about these common causes of muscle cramps: dehydration, lack of calcium, magnesium, and/or potassium. Does any of this sound possible?

SW 240 CW 222 GW 210 Lbs to Goal: 12 I think this is a bit much but let's see how it goes. I haven't weighed 210 in over 25 years!
  17. Wow! Thanks for the warning. I am 11 days post op. I have been drinking only about 16 oz water a day, and last night popped a couple of Tums for heartburn. No more of that! I'm sipping as I type...haha. I hope you are much better, and thanks again!
  18. I had already caught a cold while I was in the hospital from the VSG. In the hospital they gave me Tylenol and Sudafed...so I continued taking it after I got home.

    New to the Site

Hi, I hope you are feeling better. I seem to have taken a turn for the better yesterday. ...Still trying to get all that Water down. Take care, I wish you the best!
  20. Hello Everyone, I'm new to the site and was happy to find it. I just had my VSG on June 6th. I have been on the protein shake diet since May 23rd. I have lost about 15 lbs. so far. (starting at about 240 and now about 225) This may be the least I've weighed in about 20 years! (I am 46 yrs old). I'm feeling a little down, maybe not just from the diet but I also caught a terrible cold this past week. I'm thinking I may be a little dehydrated, it is hard getting in all that water. My stomach is still tender...inside and out. I can only hope this will improve. I'm anxious but also scared to start "real" food next week...wondering if it will make my stomach "rumbly." If anyone would Iike to comment I'd appreciate the feedback. Good luck to everyone out there!
  21. My surgery was on 6/6 too. What added to my misery was a terrible cold that I caught. I had a really hard time emotionally around day 5 or 6, when I thought I should be feeling better but I wasn't. Protein shakes always go down fine, but when I added even the littlest thing to my diet I would get major diarrhea. Whether it was yogurt or soups or just some milk added to my shake. Gas and burping too! After some trial and error, I believe the cause of the diarrhea was eating too fast. I've always been a gulper, not a sipper. That has already had to change. I finally took a turn for the better just yesterday, Day 10. We just have to remember that our system is in a terrible state of shock and not to expect too much too soon. Take care and I'm sure you'll feel much better in a few days!

The best thing I ever bought!!

Thanks for the great tip. I love my food bubbling hot...and since I start soft foods next week I wasn't looking forward to cold scrambled eggs!. I'm going shopping this weekend for a warmer and new dishes. Yay!

    NO COFFEEE POST OP

Does anyone have a great brand of decaf they enjoy? I have been a coffee addict even as a child. I am more sad that I can't have my morning coffee, than the food I am missing. I tried Folgers decaf and Starbucks and do not like either one. But I also have a second question: I am 10 days post op and I think my taste buds are out of whack. Nothing seems to taste like it used to. Has anyone experienced this?
  24. Hi, your topic really caught my attention. I also bought Bariatric Advantage multi-vitamins and I hate them! Although I have not thrown up. (I had my VSG on 6/6/11) I bought the French Vanilla flavor and they are strong tasting and melt like sand in your mouth. I am forcing myself to get them down. But I was thinking of crushing them and adding them to my protein shakes since they are vanilla flavored...do you think that's an option for you? I also bought their calcium tablets and hate them even more...I have to admit I haven't taken them in a few days. Ugh! I feel for you, but hang in there and see if your dietician can help you out. I am going to start trying liquid and chewy forms of supplements next, the chalk and sand are too yucky!!

Thanks for the kind welcome Valentina. It looks like we are on a similar journey---timing and weight-wise. I look forward to comparing notes in the future!
