Wishes: How was it determined that you needed to do a doctors supervised diet prior to surgery?

I am in the process of getting through all of the logistics leading up to the scheduling of surgery. I am very excited and look forward to working hard to do my part torward getting and staying fit. How did you all manage staying calm while waiting for a surgery date? All I want to do is talk about it.
