    Ball is rolling......

    Although my insurance was the same a bmi of 40+ or 35+ with weight related issues, I fell in the first one, having brought my bmi down from 66. However they went by what my starting bmi was when I first entered the program and it was 40.25 a year ago. I could not make up my mind at that time so I did not see the surgeon. I went to see her in June, my bmi was 37 had me worried because my weight loss of 176 pounds had taken care of all of my pre-morbid conditions. However she said it was based on my starting weight when I went through weight loss management clinic so I got my surgery date that day. You might ask if your insurance works the same as mine did. Just a thought.
  2. I chose the band and my surgeon was in full agreement with me. I had been told she would not, but she took into account that I had already lost 176 pounds and had healthy eating and living styles at this point, I just needed something extra to help me reach my goal and maintain it. Had she advised other avenues such as the sleeve or bypass, I would have had to think long and hard. The fact that those 2 procedures work on malabsorption is scary to me. Also the fact that the band is reversible should problems arise was one other thing that factored in for me. I have a friend who had the sleeve done about 18 months ago, she is much younger than me and she has lost the weight but she has also lost her youthful look. Was this caused by he malabsortion part of this surgery one never knows. I have lost about 100 pounds more than her and I am 13 years older and I look younger than her? But than again it could just be genetics? One never knows. I'm sure you will make the right decision. Go to support groups for the different procedures and than you can talk with others who have had it done. I did, and it was very helpful. Blessings to you!

    Full liquid diet

    They did not let me have cream of wheat till this week in stage 2. But I did have a lot of tomato soup, tried cream of chicken and it caused heartburn both times, so I took that off my menu. My surgeons office had me make my shakes in 2% milk, I had not drank 2% in forever! Back to non fat now and looking forward to pureed salmon for dinner tonight. Slow and easy they told me, so that's what I'm doing. It is hard because my best friend is a man, and our relationship seemed to revolve around food, going to coffee out to eat etc. He is very slim, but I sure miss those times together right now.

    Acid Reflux

    Have you tired sleeping with your head slightly elevated? You can put blocks under the head of your bed if you prefer. That's what they had me do many years ago. Than when I went in for my lapband a couple weeks ago at my pre-op visit they told me to do that again to prevent it from happening during the first 6 weeks post op. Just a suggestion, but more important check with your surgeon. Best wishes to you!
  5. Okay today I entered the realm of puree foods, stage 2 post op diet. Well I have this great food processor and always wondered why it came with a baby food attachment?? Well this morning I found out, it works great for making my new meals! Thank you KitchenAid! Just had to share my awe haw moment!

    Severe Sleep Apnea

    My son in law has severe sleep apenea and they gave him the bi-pap machine, however it is like the c-pap only for more severe cases of apenea. I know my doctor said bring your machine to the hospital if you did have it.
  8. OMG! I'd have a new doctor yesterday! I just had to change PCP not because I wanted to but because she moved;( however she was always supportive even when I weighed 421 pounds! She always made me feel good about myself. Best wishes to you you're doing a fantastic job!
  9. Yes it is clear that the lap band did not cause the problem, however the liver was lacerated thus causing an infection. This can happen in any abdominal surgery not just with the lap band.. Yes the title leads one to believe that the problem resulted from the lap band when in fact it did not, it was something that happened during the placement of the lap band. With that being said a title of maybe almost died from complications during lap band surgery might have been better. But that easily could have been almost died from complications during gall bladder surgery, do you see where I'm going with this. I am so sorry you had this happen to you. The fact is lap band surgery is very safe, safer than many other types. I am sorry this has become a big debate again I feel it was miss wording as in fact the lap band itself did not cause the problem that happened however it happened during your lap band surgery again it could happen during any abdominal surgery.

    Traveling = Tight

    Well only drink on the plane don't try eating, that's what I was told. Has to do with air pressure on the band.
  11. I too was told no carbonated drinks, but no worries here I quit drinking them 8 years ago. I only had to see what happens to nails if you let it sit in carbonation for a day or so, they totally disappear! So I'm not really giving anything up!

    Traveling = Tight

    My surgeon said to just drink when traveling by air and it will cause your band to get tight. Are you talking about air travel by chance?

    OK, here goes...

    You look fantastic! Congratulations!
  14. I was told that my doctor was not big into the band, so I went in with an open mind, However I had already decided I did not want something that offered no way out if there were complications. When I told her I wanted a band, she said she felt was the way to go for me. Since I have good nutritional habits and workout habits as well, Something I didn't always have, however I had already lost 176 on my own. Thus the band was the way I went. It's a new lifestyle, but I can do this, just making my way through the 6 week post surgery diet. Best wishes and blessings to you!

    Finally have my surgery date!!!!

    Congratulations! I know how you feel, the day before surgery my mind went all different directions, like how my eating would be different from here on out, and the 6 week post op diet they give me, just lots of emotions. But now nearly 2 weeks into it, I'm back at the gym and life is resuming a new kind of normal! Blessings to you!
  16. Boy do I relate, not that I have lost over 180 pounds, well all I can say is the suit is wrinkled! The birthday suit that is! But I'd rather have the wrinkles than fill them out. I lost 176 per band, and not 8 since getting banded nearly 2 weeks ago. Everything seems to bag and droop! But all in all I can live with that. Good luck!
  17. Okay I had lost over 175 before surgery, but had been stuck for some time. Decided to go forward with the lap band 1 so I could lose more and 2 I want to keep it off. So any tool that will help is welcome. I was to see my PCP on Thursday but they called today and she had to go out of town tomorrow could I come in today at 3:45, sure why not! Dang it all I had to face her very telling scale, but happy to say down 8 pounds! I'm one happy girl and Wednesday I can start phase 2 of the diet, wow what will I do with real food?? Just looking forward to the day I can chew again, sure do miss it! Anyway well wishes to all on LBT this fine evening!

    Pre-pre op diet

    All for the ultimate success in the long run. Good luck to you!

    Pre-pre op diet

    Wow that is long! I did not have to change by diet just the day before surgery. However I was eating a very healthy diet and workout program. I was told that she wish more people did so much prior to surgery it would make her job easier! My guess they are just trying to drop a few more pounds maybe?. just a guess on my part however. Blessings to you as you move forward in your journey!

    Marriage problems??

    Well I'm a widow, because he refused WLS that the doctor wanted him to have and he died due to conditions from his weight. I do have a real nice guy friend who at first tried to talk me out of it, but he ended up being very supportive. He told me it was my body, and that is right on! Too bad they do not have support groups for couples it would make it something you could address together that way and he would not feel left out. Just a thought??
  25. Alright prior to me getting banded my middle daughter who is 38 was very much against it, was even sending me text messages right up to being taken into pre-op trying to change my mind. At that time I just needed support, not discouragement, Well she finely said she was glad I had not chosen to mutilate my body by having bypass or a sleeve done her words not mine.. My phone no longer worked when I got into pre-op put an end to that! Well now she tells me that although she did not support me getting this done she would support her husband having it done! Well I have to agree there, I would totally support him having it done. He is 42 around 450 has type 2 diabetic, high blood pressure, and very bad sleep apnea and he had a heart attack a few months back. At first hew was going to watch what he ate, but now it's back to the old bad habits. She finely talked to him about it, his doctor wanted him to have a bypass and he said no. But he says no to the band as well. Oh how I wish he could see that this could improve and prolong his life. What do you say to someone when you just want them to be able to see their little girl grow up?
