Just wanted to share my Lap Band Surgery day. I checked in at the hospital at 5:30 am this morning. I was escorted to the pre-op room where they asked me to fully undress and put a gown on. The nurses asked me numerous questions and made me feel real comfortable. The nurse asked me if I wanted to take something prior to going in the operation room, I guess to calm any nerves if I had any. I politely declined because I was cool as a cucumber. The anesthesiologist came by and asked a few medical background questions. Shortly thereafter the surgeon's nurse came by to go over the post op diet and pain medications they will be giving me. I did meet the surgeon just before being rolled back to the operation room.
So when I get into to the surgery room I got a little anxiety. Seeing all these robotic tools, medical lights, and "doctor stuff", made me feel a little nervous. They rolled me next to the surgery bed. They asked me scoot over onto to the table. They have arm and leg extensions where I was asked to spread on onto. I remember them strapping me down across my waist with my gown on. I am assuming they strapped my arms and legs down. I don't recall because the anestesia kicked in immediately.
I woke up in the post op room and felt sore. The nurse asked me if I needed to urinate. I did but declined because I'd figure I'd hold it until I got home. The nurse was insistent to urinate prior to leaving the hospital. The nurse wheeled me over to the restroom. I felt very weak. My shoulders and stomach was hurting. It was hard to stand up. The post op nurses came by and asking me alot of questions but I keep falling in and out of sleep. They wheeled me out to the front of the hospital where my ride was waiting.
When I got home I did not want to move. LoL. I was content just sleeping there. I was scared I was going to fall. Getting up and down was painful. So my mother got a office chair with wheels on it and rolled me to my room. I highly recommend a chair with wheels for when you get home. I didn't want to hold on to my 5 foot 4 asian mom for support. I slowly climbed into the bed and fell asleep. I woke up at 7pm this evening having to urinate. I was in alot of pain and felt like throwing up. Make sure you make yourself cough to get the stuff out. Initially before surgery I told my friends I wasn't going to use the pain meds they provide. I quickly changed my mind and took some liquid loratab. I also took some nausea medicine and used a gas x strip.
I am currently sitting on my recliner and typing this post. The pain has subdued dramatically and no longer feel like throwing up. I still haven't lifted my shirt to check out the scars yet. As a matter of fact I still have hospital socks on along with some leg warmers the hospital provided to help with blood clots. Well I hope this helps people that are about to take on this endeavor. Feel free to ask me any questions.
BTW, in my head food sounds good. But I am not physically hungry right now. I am in no mood to get back on liquids again. Just make sure you keep sipping Water.

I just wanted to update everyone. I am 4 days post op and doing well. I have been taking pain meds every 4 hours because if I go even 30 minutes past the time for my next dose the pain becomes pretty bad. I have been fortunate to have my husband and mother in law both here helping. I was able to shower day after I got home from the hospital. I will post pics when I get a little more healed up. but thought I would let everyone know that I am done with surgery and doing very well

Good news! My dietician approved for me to eat a chicken breast with a non-starchy vegetable and a salad! I have found that being VERY precise with spacing my 5-6 meals and drinking drinking drinking (water) does help, as well as having a couple ounces of juice If I feel shaky. I am halfway there and feeling motivated to keep pushing through! Thanks everyone! I went to my nephews birthday party yesterday and watched everyone eat burgers, hot dogs, baked Beans, potato salad, cake, ice cream etc... I drank my Water, BUT I actually felt pretty good. I felt in control. I wasn't sad or mad that I couldn't eat the food. I felt proud that I was able to politely say No thank you when I was offered cake, Cookies etc.. The pre-op diet isn't all bad, it definitely helps you realize how strong you can be!!

I started this process over a year ago and have gotten no where. At first I was 100% positive that I was going to do the bypass. I met with the surgeon, did all of the pre op test and visits that were required. Then I found a website that I was really excited to dig in to. however, it seems that 90% of what I read was all negative. Scared the heck out of me and my family. I want to lose weight and I need to, but I can't see through all the negative things. So a couple months ago I looked more into the band. Safer and can be removed if problems arise. Makes more sense to me? Then of course I go and check out the other site and people on there are all negative about the band stating that it's "Old" and doesn't work and so on. Thankfully there was this one person that provided the link to here. Much happier and much better reading. Now for me...I am the heaviest I've even been in my life and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I've tried numerous diets and pills and nothing is working. So I'm at the end of my rope. I just keep gaining weight even though I'm not doing anything different. I've talked to my family about the band and they are very supportive, I mean truthfully supportive, not like they semi were with the bypass. I called the doctors office and made my first appointment and found out that everything is the same as far as qualifying except it's an upper GI x ray rather than the tube thingy. They also said that my insurance company has changed it from a 3 month weight to a month weight. Which is fine because I wanted to have it towards the end of the year. I have vacation days saved up and typically use them at the end of the year anyways. I'm trying to keep this between famiy and the few I tell. So If I can do it and be out a week or so then I'll be good. I just wanted to introduce myself and would love to hear from anyone. I'm still new in my journey but feel that this is the right step. I'm not scared (maybe just a little) as I was with the bypass and feel that this is the right journey for me. I know it's not a miracle and I have to work at it for it to be successful as with any route I might take but I honestly don't feel like I'm risking my life with having this done. The bypass was iffy. Thanks again for listening. I just wanted to express myself and my concerns....

I had surgery 5 days ago,and feel good,I'm not real hungry and haven't gotten sick,I have no regret and also did a lot of research before going under, the lapband did seem safer and so its the route I took.I haven't weighed myself yet,but have a Dr appt on Friday,n the staff has been great, calling to check on me and offering their help for anything. Hope you make the right decision to make you happy ,cause that's what I did,and my family has been very supportive.

I was banded a week ago- I don't think I could have done the bypass- I too thought that was a bit drastic for me to actually cut out part of my body. I have been happy so far- I am down 20 pounds since I started and feel great! Looking forward to a new me with more energy than I have had in years!

Hello everyone. I've been lurking on this board for the past couple of months, and finally got my band yesterday. My surgeon is Dr. Michaelson at Northwest Weight Loss Surgery. So far I'm doing well. Lost 7 lbs. in 11 days of my pre-op diet, have lost another pound since yesterday, no nausea so far, pain controlled by lortab... but I feel like I need to burp! I've tried some chewable Gas-X, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Anyone else got ideas?
Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself finally!
