    Post Op Hunger

To me it is about listening to your body, Don't force things you can't eat. and what you do consume, do so in moderation. I didn't get banded to starve myself thin, I got banded to help me know when to stop eating, and so that I eat in moderation. I notice that alot of people see getting banded as fast weight loss and shock thier bodies into a state of ketosis, which while it makes you lose weight fast, it isn't very healthy or wise. The body needs carbs and fats in small degree, to function properly. I quickly progressed from clear liquids to creamy and to my own blended shakes, as it is more an issue with particulate matter hanging up in the band, then liquid matter. I can't tolerate the Protein shakes such as ensure and slimfast, and I just can't stand to put all those chemical in me. I'm eating mushies right now, but it doesn't mean I'm eating bland. Tonight we are having mashed sweet potatoes, homemade applesauce, and creamed spinach. The rest of the family is also going to enjoy stuffed rabbit. I may have a bite or two, depending on how tender the meat turns out. I had one bite of chopped BBQ last night, I had to chew forever but it went down without problem, the key for me is how big the bite.

    Slim Fast????

4 days after surgery, the odds are your going to be bloated, in some pain, guarding your incisions, and not wanting to be too far away from a bathroom, or a couch to lay down on... I'd forgo a beach trip if it was me. Granted I was back to work in 4 days, half days, but trust me.. walking sitting, moving took a great deal of effort, and those protein drinks give you the runs, not to mention all the gass you have.

    How soon 'til pool?

I was told two.. so long as your incisions are healed you should be fine.

    Post Op Hunger

There is so much variation is what doctors recommend. mine is a week on clear a week on creamy/mushie, then solids. I took it upon myself to short it from week to 5 days. I know my body well enough to listen to it and the clear liquids weren't cutting it. so I moved up to creamy. I simply can not tolerate the protein shakes. They go right through me, and I saw no logic in saying well it's ok if you have creamy protein shakes, but you can't have a more healthy soup of the same consistency. I agree with Rocko on the sodium, hence we make our own. You get a lot of protein from homemade stock made from bones, I know alot of people like the fast losing that comes from putting your body into ketosis and depriving it of carbs, but I'm not one of them. Some carbs are necessary, especially for mental clarity. So I just go slow and eat healty, and creamy liquids. I did add hummus yesterday, I'm only consuming about 750 calories a day thus far, but I'm full, and content. Tomato basil soup is wonderful, as is split pea soup. Dh purees them real smooth and fine, so they slide down. Cottage cheese and hummus are also great. Eaten slowly and chewed well for the CC. I don't like all the additives in prepared foods and I don't tolerate High Fructose Corn Syrup, Splenda, and protein powers, they just make me more gassy, and uncomfortable. I think just eating healthy and natural is much better for a person. Listen to your bodies.. (except when it screams out for chocolate).... That's my .02
  6. Well, I had the band put in on Friday.. Made it through the weekend. I'm lucky that monday's are my short days, I teach until 10. I made it to work this morning by 7:30.. just drank hot tea. Didn't want to be farting in front of my students. The driving took a bit out of me. I need to keep a pillow in the car between me and the seatbelt. and Potholes suck. Aside from that I made it through 2 hours of class. I'm winded, and tired, but more from the driving to and from, than work itself. Not really in any pain, more discomfort than anything else. I slept great last night, only woke up once to pee and shift positions. Almost able to sleep on my side. Can hardly wait tell I can!
  7. by day 9 you should be able to be moving.. not lifting or straining. if you do a lot of walking everyday leading up to your return. and make sure you get lots of rest.

    Questions

I'm glad to here your up and around Terry.. Don't over do it, take care of yourself. As for me I was banded last friday. Yes there was some pain but all of it manageable with drugs, which I only needed the first 36 hours after. I was back to work half days on monday. My bandages have comes off, I'm still stiff when it comes to bending and stuff, and at about 90% now. I think these boards are great for reading to get knowledge. Everyone comes through differently that is for sure, and pain is relative to the person, but it all depends on how you approach it. I approached it with the mindset of: Prepare for the worse, then be pleased with what you have. and I just said.. gotta suck it up and get through it. To be honest, childbirth hurt more, so did a root canal. Good luck on getting banded.. ask questions and read through all the threads you will learn a lot.

    Carbs

Carbs often get a bad wrap, but they are needed in the diet. They are critical to brain function and mental clarity. Alot of people go on high protein no carb diets and but thier bodies into ketosis. Which IMHO isn't healthy for the long hall. It's about balance.
  10. I've been at work three days now.. granted my teaching schedule is in the morning only, and i rush home at noon and nap.. I'm still weak, and tire easy, but for the most part I'd say I'm at 85%. I couldn't go 8 hours that much I know.. Gotta have them naps:notagree

what do you usually eat each day?

Try using www.fitday.com to journal it's free and I just got turned on to it and am using it myself. I'm glad to hear some of you can eat bran/granola for breakfast. I would think it would clog the port, I''m still in mushie stage but missing my cereal. I simply can't stand the protein drinks.

    Reporting Inappropriate Posts

What constitutes an inappropriate post? Values are highly subjective? Since this is a forum about Lap band, anything not related to bandsters could be deemed such.

    What is a good reply?

This is a huge one for me, as my husband is a Chef, and a culinary instructor at that. Dining out is a HUGE factor in our lives. People cook for us all the time, and we normally would dine out 3-4 times a week. We agreed to tell people that we needed a month off, (tell I get on solids).. but then we plan on resuming as normal. I just plan on eating less, and in cases were we can we will split entrees. I tend to focus on the conversation, and eat 1 bite to every 5 my husband takes now. I really don't think it will be that big of an issue, so long as I chew. I was real worried about it prior to surgery, as I thought I was giving up food for life.. now I look at it as I'm even more a food snob than I was. That one bite better be damned good, people are used to it from my husband, now they get it from me.
  19. I wish I'd have known that the liquid diet causes the runs, and that with the gas, you have to be carefull not to have a blow out.
  20. I got a great deal from capital one.. no interest if I paid it off in a year, and since I didn't borrow the full amount it should be ok.
  21. The driving is the worse part. potholes hurt. I have about a 20 min drive. I teach so I can sit or stand , I normally stand.. The hardest part has been my voice. the anesthesia and intubation scratched it, so it comes and goes.
  22. 20k sounds way too high.. I'm a self pay and I only paid 16K and my doc is more expensive than most. I looked at it this way.. new car.. or new body.. guess what I choose :clap2:

Congratulations.. That is cause for celebration!
  24. Thanks for telling us about fitday.com. I just signed on to it.. what a useful site. I think it will be really helpful. I've been wondering how many calories I've been taking in. Now I know.
  25. Thanks Rocko.. I'm glad I saw it.. it gets confusing to keep up with who posts were, I wish they were a bit more organized, or only showed current. I'm glad you posted it twice, cause I've only seen it once. It's a great article I sent it to my family members and posted the 4 food groups on the fridge. Are you still on liquids? or have you progressed to mushies. creamies yet? I'm toying with some cottage cheese today.. just a few bites. I can't stand those protein drinks.
