  1. My surgeon was Dr.Pinnar and he is here in Jacksonville Fl - I believe he worked with Dr. Cywes in the past . Dr Pinnar helped save my life with the lap band and his approach to making it work for you. I have lost 280 pounds and completely reversed diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and lung disease. His contact info is 904-503-1530 and he's on 4131 University Blvd building 15 Jacksonville, FL 32216

  3. Spin helps in the sense that it burns calories however if you want to lift "da butt" you will need to do specific exercises that effect the 3 muscles that make up "da butt"

    1. Gluteus minimus

The smallest of the glute muscles lies directly under the gluteus medius.

    2. Gluteus medius

This pork chop-shaped muscle sits near the outside of your pelvis.

    3. Gluteus maximus

True to its name, the maximus is the biggest muscle in your body.

Some of the key exercises are:

Bulgarian split squat - 15 slow proper reps per leg

    *Following done while on forearms

    Mule kick

    Mule kick w/curtsy

    Swim kick

    Circle kick

*All "kicks" done 15 reps back to back all one one side then switch to the other side

Prepare for an awesome soreness in the following day ; )

  4. I have been struggling. I have gained back all my weight! I lost 40 over the past 4 years' date=' and gained almost all if it back in the past 6 months. I have learned that I have to exercise. If I don't, I gain!

    My entire family looks at me like I am a failure. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />[/quote']

Wow... My heart goes out to you - I know it's extremely difficult to struggle lose and gain and have people (especially family) be critical of you.

The question isn't what happened in the past but what will you do TODAY. Not tomorrow or this week or next week or after Memorial Day etc... But what will you do today ?

Exercise ... YES, everyone I have known with long term success exercises.

What will you do today ?

  5. I've seen a lot of weight loss success stories and in nearly all of them running has been a huge part of their success. I really would like to work up to eventually doing a marathon. I know' date=' at this point, a marathon is a longggg way off, but I'm willing to work to get there. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for beginner runners ?? Thanks![/quote']

    Hi Erin,

Congrats for being on the path to WL success ! Running a marathon, what a great goal : ) running is the King of calorie burn which is why you read lots about it as part of WL success stories. More than that it offers a unique feeling of accomplishment and like WL requires endurance... Putting one foot in front of the other over and over, again and again.

Yes you can do it!! I started at over 450 lbs and now do Triathlons and 1/2 Marathons (no full marathons yet). When I started I could only walk for 30 Seconds ... You see, at over 450 lbs I was on oxygen with lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure etc... But I started where I was, walking 30 Seconds and added to it each day. I developed a successful plan and passed it on to my sister (who has lost over 230 lbs thus far)

You can read about her first 5k here - following my training plan of 30 Seconds to Victory.

    http://www.300poundsdown.com/2013/02/mission-possible-my-1st-5k.html

You can do it - all things are possible.

  6. Guess I got lucky lol.

As far as calorie burn' date=' I don't have any issues at the moment as I workout 6 days a week as well as have a trainer that kicks my behind and love her to death!![/quote']

"Luck" Noun: Success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions.

6 days a week plus a trainer ? That's not Luck bringing you results that's reaping the rewards of hard work. LOVE IT !

At over 450 lbs and on oxygen I started with 30 seconds of exercise and increase it 30 seconds every day. Life is Filled Fun and Free

Today - setting record with largest beach Yoga and then running on the largest all beach 5k the "Never Quit" how appropriate for us that battle obesity' date=' huh ? I am here to say NEVER QUIT!!

  9. A difference between afternoons versus mornings? I don't really' date=' the calorie benefits was the biggest turn on for me with the gym in the mornings.[/quote']

It's good you aren't experiencing a diff since you are doing afternoon now with your schedule. Some people notice that they have a mental bump (feel accomplished - energized ) when the exercise first thing in morning.

Regarding efficient calorie burn as it relates to exercise many people have success by doing the following:

1- Mix it up! Don't do the same routine each day

2- Strength train - especially the large muscles (legs)

3- Add interval training (HIIT) 2 or 3 times a week

    Lee

  10. I use to workout in the mornings because its the best time to workout- you don't have any calories taken in yet' date=' so all calories burned are directly going to what you ate days before versus making up for calories not yet digested. But due to work schedule I now workout after work[/quote']

Working out makes all the difference. The morning reaps gains beyond calories - it's too bad you can't find a way to get the morning workouts back - do you notice a difference ?

  11. That's helpful' date=' Lee, thank you <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I actually do have a lot of hobbies, just not as many physical ones as I would like. I am extremely passionate about music and am a singer (though I doubt anyone here is interested in hearing my song covers, haha), I do graphic design and just opened a page on Facebook for it. I would love to really get into painting now that I think about it... in physical activity, I love to swim - can't wait for 3 weeks since there is a pool in my apartment building - and I enjoy traveling a whole lot, especially cruising![/quote']

Nice!! You are ahead of the game : ) you have skills and passions NOT attached to food dive into them fully - fearlessly ... Also you will likely find that you have more energy improved focus and confidence to pursue your passions as you flush the garbage (SUGAR & Simple carbs) from your system. Exercise changes brain chemistry abs gets hormones to work for you rather than against you - start SOMETHING and add little each day. How exciting the road that you are on !

  12. Ahhhhh all the positive responses full of encouragement really is overwhelming to see in the BEST way possible! Thank you ALL for taking time to help me through this... I can't put to words how much it means to me. I think the best lesson I can take away from everything is that I have to enjoy myself throughout my journey and realize that this decision is not an end-all-happiness thing.

Sending my best to you all... I feel motivated and proud of my choice again <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

This is going to sound stupid and oversimplified to you - at least it sounded like that to me when I was where you are on my journey but... You must find ways to"be happy" "reward" yourself "enjoy" that are Not food related OR you will not find the freedom you seek. That does NOT mean find "heathy" food substitutes and ways to "be happy" using food that's just healthier lower cal choice. It DOES mean finding new ways to "be happy" like painting, writing, hiking, racing, book groups, singing, building, dating, swimming, etc... It takes time but you can find fulfillment in other ways and its important to your hunt for freedom.

I try to live by this Mission Statement:

    Mission statement on Food

Use Food only to nurture and strengthen my body so I can have more exciting and fuller experiences.

Never use food to honor or Celebrate a day/person/experience/occasion or to "feel" or to NOT "feel" an emotion such as happiness, sadness, boredom, frustration, panic, fear, stress.

Never use food to connect or build a bridge to a person or place.

It is only with a more Healthy strong body that I can have the energy, endurance, strength and vitality to maximize every experience life has to offer.

  13. Wow so many great ideas! Keep on mind you don't need to go to or belong to a gym to get a great workout. Although group fitness is critical to add at some point as you progress. The power of the group is valuable.

    Ez workout anywhere:

    5 min active warmup

Walk at intense level 20 min

    10 jumping jacks

10 push ups ( back flat - go down only a little I'd that's all you can but no knees on the floor)

10 squats (keep knees behind toes)

    10 lunges left leg

    10 lunches right leg

    10 crunches (don't strain neck)

    1 minute plank

    5 min slow stretch

Too much ? Cut it all in half (10 min walk - 5 reps each) STILL too much? cut it all in half again (5 min walk - 2 reps each ) STILL TOO MUCH? cut it in half again (5 min walk 1 rep each)

The Key is Start Today - then add 30 secs each day to the walk and 1 rep

Hope in Your Future is Power in Your Present!

  14. GREAT suggestion. I'm 3.5 weeks out and found myself stuck and hungry one day. I chose to starve until I got home...why didn't I think of a 7-11 or grocery store!! **duh!**

This whole changing your mindset takes awhile.

@sweetpea...chicken AND chili is probably too much. Eat just some chicken...you'll be happier for it in the long run.

    Hey LB Anna,

Mindset change is a perfect way to describe it! Two things I do that have helped a ton w/food

1- I buy the pouches of flavored tuna and I tape a plastic fork to the back of the pouch. Then I place them in my car, back packs, workout bags office desk etc... Then I ALWAYS have instant ready to eat Protein no prep required !

2- I actually map out where all the places are in the areas I travel locally where I can buy quick food - certain gas stations n 7/11's carry hard boiled eggs ready to eat - fruit - Greek low fat yogurt plus they almost all carry muscle milk (not my fav Protein shake but will do in a pinch)

Preparation lends itself to piece of mind - lowers stress equals less "crazy" in my head - less cravings

  15. I have had the band for 6 months and am dealing with this very issue myself. Although I have lost weight because I had some very good willpower in the beginning' date=' my willpower has diminished over the past month or so. The band does not help with head hunger or food addiction in my opinion. That has been an entirely separate issue for me that I am learning I have to deal with if I am going to be able to make the band work for me. Although it can help you eat less, there are certain foods that it has no affect on and that is where willpower becomes the solution. I, too, would not recommend getting the band before these issues are dealt with because for me, there has been an added guilt to not doing what I am supposed to do because I have a tool that I worked very hard to get and I am not using it the way it is intended - that added guilt is very difficult to deal with.[/quote']

    Hi Sunny,

I totally understand how frustrating it feels to believe you "have no excuse" and yet still do the very thing (eating/poor food choices) that you do not want to do! Literally no pain is as great as the feeling you have described... in my opinion and experience.

I have good news if you are interested ? Exercise done in a certain way at a certain time WILL change your behavior slowly but certainly... transforming it into the behavior you desperately desire (making good food choices more often).

My evidence isn't only anecdotal (based on personal experience and of those who have followed me) but several studies are now showing that exercise positively effects the prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain often referred to as the "CEO" or "parent" helping us make choices based on things other than cravings etc...

Let me know if you would are interested in pursuing this direction.

Hope in Your Future is Power in Your Present!

  16. Anyone here want to share how they were able to overcome using food as a "go-to" drug? I am 34 and have recently weighed In at 417 lbs. I did a Jillian Michaels program and got down to 393....Then went back up to 410. Then found out I am diabetic and managed to diet and gym it back down to 400. Now I am 410 again.

Point is... The weight loss is not as empowering to me as the food. I wish it were. How do you stop the food addiction if I were to get the band???

    Jlan,

You sound like a perfect candidate for surgical intervention - I have the band but the sleeve is also a good alternative. I am 5ft 8 and was over 450 lbs with lung disease high blood pressure diabetes and given two years to live. I was hospitalized and still couldn't stop eating NOTHING worked anymore. The Lapband saved my life ... I still had to do Work but the Lapband gave me a tool to make it possible.

I have lost over 280 lbs all my diseases are reversed and I am healthier and more physically fit than anytime in my life.

Yes WLS can and will work ...IF YOU DO.

This will give you safe meal enough Protein get a bottle if Water also

  18. Well I'm thinking ill just have to get up when my kids do and workout while they are watching tv otherwise it will have to be at their nap time. We also put a pool on so I plan on doing some pool workouts on those ridiculously hot days.

I am about to finish my second round of Insanity the last week of school so I haven't yet decided which workout to do. I have P90X so I'm leaning towards that but not sure yet.

    He Goal Achiever ; )

Both insanity and P90x are legit workouts that take reverse approach to on anaerobic / aerobic workouts. You can't really go wrong with either one... The two keys to those workouts are first always modify where needed and second attack it! Meaning intensity intensity intensify - better to go really hard and walk in place to "rest" then go

Hard again as opposed to pacing yourself.

Can't wait to read all about it !

    Lee

  19. I get up at 4:15am on weekdays to get my workout in before work. On weekends either first thing or after 12:30 when my kids take their nap. Summer vacation is going to be a challenge actually.

Goal seeker... Your handle should be Goal Achiever!! 4:15 am is MAKING it happen ! Awesome!! So what's the plan for summer then ? I know you have your success plan lined up ! Do tell : )
