    New And Scared

I had my 6 month medically supervised diet a couple years ago - so I haven't been "dieting" at all and as a matter of fact it's been the opposite. My surgery is Nov. 6 and I keep telling myself I have to get on track before the pre-op diet (they'll weigh me in on Oct. 24 the day of my nutritional appt. and I don't want to show a big weight gain since my appt. with the surgeon). The 2 week preop diet is really scaring me - can I do liquids for 2 whole weeks. I've seen some ppls' Liquid Protein diet actually allows them to eat one real meal a day - I'm hoping I have that but I'm not counting on it. You're not alone in your reservations. I'll be totally psyched one day and then depressed the next questioning my decision. I just know in my heart it's the right decision. I'm on YouTube and hope to post videos of my journey (I've posted 2 but don't feel like I want to post another until after my NUT appt. and start of the pre-op diet). You can find me on YouTube at cmf1267. There's a big WLS community there and they are very helpful. If you haven't already - check it out.

Got My Date - Nov 6

I wish I only had 1 week of the liquid pre-op diet. I'm so scared I won't be able to do it!!

    It's A Date!

Good luck to you - my date is Nov. 6. I'm starting a more high protein diet tomorrow and trying to get to the gym daily up until Nov. 6.

    How Long Did You Wait..

I see so many ppl on YouTube talking about plastics and they're still 20-40lbs from goal. I just think that is crazy. IDK - I haven't even had my VSG yet (scheduled for Nov. 6) but if I can avoid another surgery I would like to try - but who knows once I've lost the weight I may feel differently. However, I'd like to lose all my weight & get to goal & be there for at least a year before I consider plastics. (Again I may change my mind once I get there though). I got down to 175 in 2007 and I had some extra skin on my inner thighs and a little on my stomach - but I would like to get down below 140 and possibly below 130 - so IDK how that will be with skin. Good luck on whatever decision you make. But I do think that O.T.R Sleever is right - your skin will shrink more but also your body will continue to change and fat etc. may be redistributed as you go on. Check out BandedWendy on YouTube - she did a couple videos about not getting plastics and her extra skin and her body has continued to change since she got to goal.

    Seriously Worried... Help!

LIFT WEIGHTS LIFT WEIGHTS LIFT WEIGHTS!!!!! Everyone, especially women, concentrate solely on cardio. Which, yes cardio is important to lose weight, but if you want to change the shape of your body and combat excess skin you have to weight train. You'll still probably have some - but your age is on your side and if you lift weights the excess skin may not be that bad.

Should I Or Should I Wait?

I think you should start it. You can modify or take breaks as you need. I have Insanity too. I'm hoping to start it when I get down to about 200 pounds!! Good luck!!

    I Just 'came Out'

Glad you're comfortable with "coming out" I told the family and friends I wanted to tell. My friends are very supportive. My sister's - not so much. But they will keep their mouths shut and try to support me. they know it's my decision. Good luck with the sleep study. I'm not a fan, hope your's is better than mine was!!
  8. I can't wait to Not Struggle getting up off the couch!! Or looking in the mirror that's on the closet door across from my couch and seeing Jaba the Hut sitting on the couch.

  10. To anyone whose post-op. Does the head hunger subside after the 1st month? Does the surgery in the first month help you combat it since you're still healing and can't eat much? Just wondering what to expect. thanks.

    It's A Ds For Me!

Good luck with your surgery. I'm hoping to have surgery around the same time (end of Sept-mid Oct.). I am looking forward to looking good in my clothes, wearing skirts or dresses to work, hoping I'll be able to wear shorts & sleeveless shirts next summer (hoping not too much excess skin on my legs & arms, plan to do a lot of weight training to combat). Just feeling better physically and hopefully mentally!!!
  12. I've been toying with the idea of becoming vegan or at least a fexitarian (someone who eats meat very occasionally). I think I want to keep it simple the 1st year and just lose the weight I need to lose (hopefully hit goal within 12 months). I wonder if being sleeved will help with a switch to vegetarianism. Being hungry is what always stopped me before.

    Weight Question

I haven't been told to lose any weight, but I've only had one meeting with the surgeon so far - I still have my psych eval which is scheduled for 8/28. Other than sending my file to insurance for approval I'm not sure what happens after that. I had 6 month medically supervised diet in 2010 so I'm not sure when I meet with the NUT. Anyway - I need to get my head in the right place and I want to start eating high protein/low carb and exercising regularly. I would like to get my weight down to about 225-230 before surgery.

20 Lbs In 10 Days On Preop Diet?

I think most surgeons give their patients a goal weight to lose - but I don't think they actually expect you to hit that. I think they want to see that you tried and shrunk your liver. But I don't know because I've only had one appt. with my surgeon and he didn't say anything about losing weight so I'm wondering if that will come at a later appt.

    So Sad!

Hi Tatylish - I didn't have to show that I lost weight - I just had to show that I tried. I had gone through a weight loss program in 2010 that was medically supervised (& cost a boatload of money) and I did lose about 30 pounds but I don't think there is a specific number you had to lose. Also - I heard that many insurances only require 6 months of weighins. So within the last 4 years just means that I had to show that I had tried a medically supervised weight loss program sometime from 2008-2012.
  16. There's ppl on YouTube who said in their videos that they failed their psych eval and then got a 2nd opinion - passed and had the surgery & did very well. I wasn't told I had to see a psychologist (I think I actually made an appointment with a psychiatrist) I would think that your psychiatrist who has treated you for 12 years would be the authority on whether you would do well with surgery. Personally I think its more than ridiculous that after 1 session with a psychiatrist/psychologist that they can know you well enough to know whether you'd do well with surgery. Personally - I'd check with your insurance or your surgeon & see if you can use your own psychiatrist to do your eval. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out.

    So Sad!

I thought one of the things Obamacare was supposed to address was that insurance companies were not allowed to use pre-existing conditions. Maybe that doesn't start until next year. I have BCBS of Michigan and it's one of the best insurance policies I've ever had. I still have to have my psych eval before I can submit to insurance for approval. However, I do know that my insurance did require 6 months of medically supervised weight loss within the last 4 years. Did you have to have that? Maybe that's why they are making you wait. If not - I'd appeal. Have you spoken to your insurance company or did you just get this info from your surgeons office. I'd call them myself and speak to someone at BCBS myself to get clarification and check into the appeal policy.

    Overreacting?

I'm only telling a couple of ppl before I have the surgery. But I know ppl will notice my weight loss & I've decided I will tell ppl the truth if they ask, and if they judge me that's their problem, not mine. I do think that the more that ppl choose to not tell - the more we stigmatize WLS and perpetuate the perception that WLS is bad and something to be ashamed of though. You are right though - it was definitely your decision to make whether you put it out there or not - I certainly don't plan on announcing it on FB (at least not until I get to goal, if then). That woman definitley is jealous. It would have been great though if you'd responded in kind - like yeah my surgery went really well and as you can see I'm already down 43 pounds. How's your diet going?

    How Are You Preparing?

I don't have a date for surgery yet (actually I still have my psych exam before my file can be sent to insurance). But I've been slowly buying some Vitamins each paycheck. Several months ago I was buying Shakeology from Beachbody which has about 23g of Protein per serving and 75% of all the vitamins and minerals you need for the day, so I have a couple of those stock piled. I plan on slowly stocking up on a few things as I go - s.f. Jello, s.f. popsicles, I also have a juicer and I like to juice an apple with some greens every day so I'll need to get some produce the day before my surgery. I'm single so I don't have to worry about anyone but myself. I'm not having anyone stay with me, I'm pretty sure I'll be fine. I'm sure if I really wanted to I could stay at my sister's house - but honestly since I'll be on a liquid diet for 3 weeks after sugery all my stuff will be here at home so I doubt that's something I'll do. Good luck to you on your surgery.

    Work, Haters And Motivators

I've only told 3 ppl at work and they are soooo supportive, even offering to pick me up from the hospital or drive me to my EGD if I can't get a family member who can do it. I don't think I'm going to tell anyone else at work until after I have the surgery. I'm just taking 1.5 to 2 weeks vacation time. I had some problems with my one sister. I asked her if she would be able to drive me to my EGD if I needed it and apparently she thought I was opening this up for conversation and asking for her blessing (which I wasn't). We had a heated email exchange but now I think she's come around. My other sister - will support me even if she doesn't agree & she keeps it to herself. So I'm pretty lucky for that. Good for you though - that was a great comeback and you're right - she's probably never had anyone call her on her rudeness. Good for you & good luck with your surgery!!

    Stupid Mistake!

I didn't think it was bad. I've watched 3 or 4. Actually it made me feel better knowing exactly what they are going to be doing!!
  22. Are your shakes the RTD or is it powder. If it's powder that you blend I would suggest adding a chrystal light individual drink mix to your shake or some sugar free Torani Syrup (I like raspberry) and see if that helps.
  23. Congratulations!!! You look great!
  24. Good luck with the rest of your pre-op liquid diet & your surgery. I still have to get my psche eval on 8/28 & I think they can submit to my insurance company. Hope to have my surgery beginning of October. I'm so worried about the pre-op diet - I hear it's the worst part of the journey!! Good luck again.
  25. I think the bigger stomach is actually attached to the small intestines close to where they attached the pouch - and it dumps the digestive juices directly into the small intestine which is where the majority of digestion takes place. So they can't remove it- because they need it to help digest the food in the small intestines. at least that's what is shown on the information videos on YouTube.
