A1C Level To High For Surgery

Msinzee2010, Are you seeing a dietitian? I don't know where you are having your procedure done and if they gave you a meal plan. I am going thru Kaiser and they gave us a package and in it there was a 1200 calorie meal plan that is what I followed. I agree with Morticia you can do it. Look at as changing your lifestyle now instead of waiting for the surgery. That is what has kept me sane.

    Sleep Apnea...question

Thank you so much for all of the great responses. I feel much better about the whole situation. I will try it tonight and see how it goes. I am really, really going to try using it so the report shows I do use it. I don't want them saying I'm noncompliant and prolong the surgery date. Thanks.

A1C Level To High For Surgery

No I stopped all medicine. I did it with just diet and exercise.
  4. Oh goodness where do I start? I am in the process of having the procedure done I have done research and I read that the RNY was a good procedure to have to help put the diabetes in remission. After seeing my Dr., DR. David Le he suggested that I have the sleeve. He said that because I don't have a lot to lose I can do good with the sleeve. I am actually happy that I am having the sleeve done, I was a little nervous about the RNY. I saw the DR. last week and I really thought he was going to give me a surgery date. I have to wait one more month and lose 10 lbs. my pre-surgery weight should be 175. I am at 185 and measure 4'11".. I have a BMI of 38 and a A1C of 6.5... However when I started the process I was 195. and an A1C of 8.9... How many of you had the sleeve done to put the diabetes in remission? I am a type 2, and currently not being able to take meds. for diabetes, they make me very ill. Just trying to get positive and successful stories to assure myself I'm doing the right thing. Thanks... A1C Level To High For Surgery

I'm diabetic also and the meds. made me so sick that I opted in having the surgery done. Haven't done it yet but I am in the process now. My A1C was 8.9 and I pushed myself to go to the gym and follow the preop meal plan and it is now 6.5 in less than 3 months. I know we hate when people tell us to exercise and diet. But if this is what it's going to take to get the surgery then do it. I am in the same boat as you. I want to get sleeved to help with my diabetes. With much luck it will be in remission in no time. Good luck.

    How Do You Deal With.....

OMG! That is horrible to lie, but even worse to say it's cancer. Yea, I'd stay away from her too. Sometime I wonder what goes on in peoples head...

    How Do You Deal With.....

That is what I want to think. Everything you said makes sense. But when I asked them the tone they used was a little hurtful. I am over them now. I have found the support from others who have had the procedure on here. I am thankful to all of you for being honest with me.

    How Do You Deal With.....

Thanks for your replies. I in fact want to think they aren't being selfish. But then one part of me feels they are. When I ask anyone on here about their experiences they don't think twice about telling me what they went thru. I have since stopped asking any questions or even letting them know what steps I am going thru. I truly appreciate all of your input.

Praying The Sleeve Helps With Diabetes...

I am so glad that the procedure worked for you. Do you recommend any Protein powder with less than 3 or less in carbs? I am so new at this that I don't even know where to start. Thanks, Gloria

Praying The Sleeve Helps With Diabetes...

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's a good thing to have them monitor the diabetes. I know that when I had another surgery I was so nervous that my blood sugar raised that they gave me insulin right before the surgery but it never occurred to have them check it after the surgery. Thanks again for such great advise. I am so glad that you are doing well. I'm hoping for the same.

Praying The Sleeve Helps With Diabetes...

I agree having diabetes affects us in so many ways that people who don't have diabetes just don't understand. I am hoping that I have the same results that you and everyone else on here have had. THanks for sharing your experience with me. Gloria

Just Beginning My Journey - I Have Questions

I have Kaiser. I am 4'11" weight 184 lbs. and I am diabetic, high blood pressure and cholesteral. I spoke to my dr. and she sent the referral the same day. I went to the overview class for surgery and thought it wasn't for me as I thought I didn't have much weight to lose (so I thought). I asked to be sent to a dietitian who specializes in diabetes, I followed the same meal plan as the pre-op people follow and lost some weight joined the gym and yes my A1C improved but.... I still have diabetes. So I emailed my dr. and told her I wanted to go ahead and have the surgery. I just saw the surgeon and all tho I didn't get a date for surgery he told me I am a candidate because I have the comorbitity diseases. I see him in August and I am hoping I get my date. You should try talking to your php and ask why they won't refer you. Good thing you have another health plan that covers the surgery. Best of luck to you.

Praying The Sleeve Helps With Diabetes...

OMG!!! I am so happy for all of you who have had great success with the surgery and having to stop medication or even lower the amounts of medication. The more I read the more courage I get to have the procedure done. For those of you who are ready to be sleeved I hope you too have great success. As well as for those of us who need to lose the weight before having the procedure done. I am just speechless as how well everyone is doing. I am going to have some family and friends read your comments as some friends are not being to supportive of my decision. They don't get that I am doing this for my diabetes. Yes losing those extra pounds is a plus but putting diabetes in remission is probably the best thing I could do for my health. Thanks so much.

    Protein Shake Question

I meant to say that I don't even have a surgery date yet...
  20. I am suppose to replace a meal with a protein shake. I've started drinking it but I've noticed I am hungrier than usual. Has anyone gone thru this?

    Protein Shake Question

Any recommendations on what kind of fiber to add? Benefiber? Thanks.

    Protein Shake Question

Yes it's a preop diet. I add half a banana. But don't eat anything else with it. I have been drinking it for Breakfast but after 2 hours I'm hungry. I will eat a snack but the hunger is bad. Almost like I haven't eaten anything. I try not to eat anything else with it because I'm on a 1000 calorie a day meal plan. Yes the waiting is the hardest part. The worst thing is that u dint even have a surgery date.

    Recover Time..

I am curios about this as well. I am hoping to be out for a week. I reach cake decorating I teach 2 classes a day and I can't be out more than 1 week. However classes are only 2 hours and I get to go home after the first one and then come back in the evening. Lets see how it goes.
  24. Hi I am going thru the process now. I am going thru S.S.F. Kaiser and Dr. Le is my dr. I have done all the classes, did the sleep apnea test which came back suggesting I have obstructive sleep apnea, I have a class next week. I also have an EKG and I've met with the dr. he gave me another month and I have to lose 10 lbs. my surgery goal weight is 175.00 I went to the appointment thinking I was going to have the RNY because I have the comorbitity diseases. He suggested I lose the weight on my own because I don't have much weight to lose. But because the diabetes meds make me sick he said the sleeve was the best option for me. I just hope I don't have trouble losing those 10 lbs.

    Sleep Apnea Study

I too had a major surgery and sleep apnea was not an issue, they didn't even mention it. I had to take the test too. I had to take a small wristlet type machine and place something on my ring finger and on my index finger. Got the results back today. My letter states .......the test suggests that I have obstructive sleep apnea. I go to a class and they will go over my results with me then. But I have the appointment with the surgeon on the 16th. this Monday. I am unsure how this will effect my surgery date. ugh!! The weird thing is that I don't feel any symptoms at all.
