African American Sleevers & Hair Loss
Ready4success replied to Almostthere34's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm still in the pre-op phase, but I'm a little concerned about hair loss too. I'm not really into maintaining my hair, mainly because I'm an OR nurse and I have to wear a hat at work. Another reason is that my hair is long, and it's just too easy to put it in a pony tail everyday. Anyway, I was wondering if taking supplements before hand actually helps any? I don't want to add any extra pills to my everyday regimen, because I hate talking the ones I have to take already (i.e. blood pressure and diabetes). Side note: My friend had weight loss surgery, lost a significant amount of hair, and when it grew back, it was a better grade. We laugh about it all the time. -
Too Big For Surgery?
Ready4success replied to Beanzilla's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've worked with two bariatric surgeons who imposed weight limits, 500 and 600, respectively. I've never heard of anyone imposing a weight limit below that. Regardless, the more weight you lose before surgery makes the surgery safer for you. Less risk with anesthesia and wound healing. Good luck to you. -
I have Cigna OAP also, and my out of pocket for just me is $1,000. The out of pocket for my family is $3000. I just think $2500 seems like an awful lot for individual.

Did/will You Announce Your Surgery?
Ready4success replied to thehappycat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I told one person in my department, the one that can't keep a secret, so she could tell everybody my plans to have surgery. I'm not ashamed, they've seen me lose weight, gain weight, and so on and so forth. I put it out there that I'd tried everything else, and surgery was my last option. I've not heard a single negative comment, however, two other nurses came out of the closet with their plans to have WLS too. Another is seriously considering it after talking to us openly about it. -
Congrats! You're on the road to a new, healthier you! How exciting!

Lol, I know it shouldn't be funny, but it is. Dr. Yu is my surgeon too.

Thanks PDX and New. I didn't know I had it until my doc saw it during the EGD. It does explain the horrible reflux, though. -

What Do You Do To Keep Yourself Sane?
Ready4success replied to Failure's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just thinking the same thing about the Protein drinks. Everyone says it was sort of trial and error, so I could work on finding the kind I like. My NUT said not to try to lose any weight, but to just start focusing on getting the 64oz of Water and exercise 3 days a week. This is going to drive me nuts the next couple of months. Just approve me already! -
Good News About Cigna...courtesy Of Crichard1107
Ready4success posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
Hello everybody, Cigna changed their criteria effective 5/15/12 from a 6 month medically supervised weight management program to a minimum of 3 months. If you have Cigna, and you're in the first phase of the weight management program, this applies to you. Please call your surgeon's office to see if they gotten the good news. BTW, this is courtesy of Crichard1107. She was nice enough to pass it along even though she's nearly finished with the 6 month program. Thanks! -
Chest Infection 9 Days Before Surgery - Ahhhhh
Ready4success replied to Kiloalphatango's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tell them, it's not worth the risk. If you're not honest about being sick prior to surgery, the anesthesia personnel could have a hard time removing the breathing tube afterward. You didn't come this far to get sicker after surgery for something totally unrelated to your sleeve. I'm an OR nurse and I'll tell you first hand, most anesthesia personnel don't routinely listen to your chest, unless you tell them you've been sick recently. Be honest! -

Feeling No Support
Ready4success replied to jazzyjay's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As a nurse, I've seen my share of both. I've seen healthy, thriving WLS post-op patients, and I've seen frail, sickly looking ones too. I don't know the why or the hows in the difference of appearances, but people have surgery everyday and sometimes don't bounce back as well as everybody else. I think of WLS as a chance at a better life, that comes with risks, but what's the alternative? There are healthy looking fat people (usually not for long) and there are sickly looking skinny people. I'd still rather be the sickly looking skinny person. -
Single Incision Sleeve Gastrectomy
Ready4success posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I will be having single incision surgery for my sleeve, can anyone tell me how you felt post-op? Pain? Recovery time? I've had two prior laparoscopic surgeries, and I'm worried there will be a lot of scar tissue. Did anyone have any complications from having the single incision? Any comments are welcome. Thanks! -
Question About Co-Workers
Ready4success replied to Crazyscrublady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I told the one person in my dept that can't hold water. She told any and everybody she could, and I just shrugged every time I was asked. Because we're OR nurses, everybody chimed in with their concerns about leaks, malnutrition, dehydration, and all of the above. I told them if I didn't do it, I'd be dead in a few years anyway. No one had a comeback for that one. The funny thing is that two other nurses came out the closet about their plans to have WLS too, so then it was the big girls against the skinnies. -
That's awesome! Are you just letting the surgery work or have you been exercising? I hate exercising. That's the only thing that worries me.
