  1. I am 3 months post op and have lost a total of 70 lbs. 60 of which are post op. I have been hearing recently that major increases in Protein intake are beneficial to faster weight loss. It has to do with our BMR- basal metabolic rate. So that we don't lose muscle' date=' it is recommended to increase Protein to build more muscle as the weight comes off. I was told that it is imperative to increase protein to 160 a day to INCREASE my weight loss. So far my protein intake has been lacking, I have been averaging 50-75g a day. Has anyone else heard of this? Any suggestions? I am trying to understand the process and looking for suggestions as to how to best increase my protein without increasing everything else. If anyone else has been doing this, could you please let us know how it has been working for you? Thanks![/quote']

Most of what you've heard is accurate. The part that I take issue with is 160g of daily protein. The way to calculate how much protein you need is to use a multiplier & your lean body weight.

The average person that is just trying to maintain their already existing muscle mass would use a multiplier of .40-.50, whereas a competitive body builder would use .75-1.0(depending on whether they are bulking or leaning out).

Sleevers IMO should be slightly above average. I use a multiplier of 0.6 when I calculate minimums.

Now for most women lean body weight falls somewhere in the BMI range of 20-23, men 23-25.

For example, my lean body weight is roughly 150lbs(24.2 BMI). Using the .6 multiplier my daily minimum is 90g.

In order for a person to need 160g of daily protein they would have to be 7-7.5ft tall or have the build of Arnold Schwarzenegger (in his prime).

All of this being said, going over your minimums is never a bad thing. But remember even protein carries calories with it, and if you are not utilizing the protein you consume, your body will try to store the calories that come along with it.

  2. First off ill say, DO NOT PURGE!! Purging has absolutely ZERO health benefit. Not only will you be compounding your food problems, the acids that you will be regurgitating will erode your esophagus and dissolve the enamel of your teeth.

Now to address why your sleeve is not providing the restriction you need. What are you eating/drinking? If you have a properly formed sleeve then it is not going to stretch. Are you eating slider/comfort foods?

  3. And ANYTHING low fat is still processed. There aren't "low fat" cows (God I wish there were) and there is a chemical process to remove those natural and healthy fats.

Just wanted to clear this up. All dairy products that are sold in stores are "processed" upswing the strictest sense of the word. But creating low fat cheeses, yogurts, & other dairy products is done by filtering the fat from the milk base before processing it. I'm sure there are companies that do use a chemical process for certain products but this most often not the case.

BTW, I personally believe that milk in general is not healthy, and dairy products in general should be used in moderation.

  4. WoW, let me be the first to tell you that you are doing nothing wrong.

The simple fact of the matter is that you have exited the "honeymoon" phase. The further out you get and the lighter you get the slower your loss will be.

Everybody(that i know of) experiences a slowing of loss around the 5-7month mark. The good news is, as long as you continue to exercise & maintain a caloric deficit you will continue to lose, all be it at a slower pace.

There are a few tricks you can use that you can use to your advantage though.

    Google the terms:

    Muscle confusion

    Caloric confusion

    Interval training

The more you can keep your body guessing while still keeping it properly nourished the better your results will be.

  5. If I had a surgeon that removed less than all of the fundus from my stomach (approx 85% of the total stomach) I think he would be hearing from the state medical board. The whole point of this surgery is to creat a smaller, more restrictive stomach. Leaving fundus behind means that you could easily stretch your stomach back to its old dimensions. This is one of the major problems I have with RNY, the pouch is made from fundus, it starts about 2oz, but many people stretch it way out to he point they don't have restriction anymore. The sleeve once folly healed is about 8-10oz, that is plenty, many people are actually surprised at how much they can eat once all the swelling is gone.

  6. VICTORY!!!!! Pre sleeve you wouldn't have even thought about it till after it was already eaten. Then if you were anything like me, you'd get depressed that you screwed up again and rationalized that since you already screwed up you might as well eat another one. Congratulations!!

  7. There are many options to seize weight loss. You say you are only doing Proteins, what are you eating for Protein? Your body really needs a broader nutritional spectrum. Try adding nuts to your diet. They are a great source of health fats. You also really need dark green leafy veggies. Have you tried adding freshly made green smoothies to your diet? Last resort, if you do actually reach a point that you are significantly underweight there is Boost VHC (very high calorie) it packs over 500calories into 8oz shake.

I really think that if you concentrate on rounding out your diet, your body will regulate itself to a healthy weight.

  8. Do you take financial advice from broke people?

Until you have proven by example that you know how to maintain a healthy body nobody wants your advice.

It sounds harsh, but really think about it. If an obviously unhealthy person tried giving you dietary advice, would you listen?

The best thing you can do is focus on you. Talk about you. Celebrate your success openly, believe me , they are watching. Before you know it, they'll be asking you for advice. When they do don't shake your finger at them, relate to them. Look for things that they do that was also your problem. Tell them your story and let them connect the dots. You can point out a lot of problems when you point at yourself.

  9. "Realistic" is completely dependent on you. The number I typically hear as an average is 70%, your surgeon is probably being a bit conservative.

Once you have the sleeve you will likely lose 60-70% of your excess body fat with ought much or any effort. You can continue to lose as much as you like by continuing to follow a healthy diet & exercising. It's really up to you. To steal a phrase from the 12 step world "it works if you work it".
