  1. I took a sip of a Dr pepper which I was addicted to before surgery when I was about 3 months out and YUK YUK YUK! Tasted totally nasty. I drink alot of tea now and that's better for me plus I just can't stand the taste of soda anymore

  2. Did you land in SanDiego the drive to TJ? I was asked oline while checking in for my flight, it wanted to know where I was staying, or if I had a connecting flight/cruise? I tried to put in Mexico and it would not let me. Do I need to bring anything specific that your aware of? Coming from Canada landing is San Diego the driving to Tijuana.

Why are YOU driving to Tijuana? All the doctors I have ever seen offer a pickup once a day from the San Diego airport. That shouldn't be your responsibility.

  3. I haven't been able to tolerate anything Tomato based yet, my sleeve is just too sensitive. I hope it works for you though. eggs with a bit of cheese have been great, but mostly I still eat cream Soups & yogurt. I wish you the best, this does seem to be a battle of trial & error.

Thanks - I just looked at a bottle of tea I drink all the time and see I can't have that anymore either ugh - 75 grams of carbs. :( Oh well the yogurt will be good. I good suggestion to do to change the morning Protein Shakes up - a cup of Decaf coffee mixed in with it - iced coffee :)

  4. While I agree this thread is probably a troll thread, i needed to say that not everyone has to go through hoops. I was self pay so after researching online and talking to friends who have had the surgery, just made my mind up, found a surgeon and three weeks later was sleeved. No need for seminars, approvals, psych evaluation, and onle two appointments. One with my surgeon and one with a nut she recommended and I chose to see.

Pardon my ignorance but what's a NUT?

  5. Why does it say this member is banned? Although most of us on here can't say we agree with his comment- it IS a valid point. I think that many doctors want money first and down play the bad sides of the surgery. I do not regret my surgery, but I honestly didn't realize the restriction I would have at first. My doctor and NUT mislead me....point blank, and this person may have experienced the same thing. I researched all the success of the surgery and hardly focused on the downfalls because I didn't want to psych myself out.

To the poster, just give yourself some time. I can eat half a Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich when I am being a "bad girl" and I am 8 weeks. BUT for the most part I eat good-for-me foods and I am learning slowly how to be a normal person and be a sleeve patient. It just requires patience. You'll be fine.

I would imagine it's because # 1 he is a troll or # 2 his attitude towards anyone that posted replies pretty much sucked.

  6. I think there are no set standards and doctors have all sorts of different rules. Some people are allowed to eat right after surgery and some follow a stricter diet. Some drink sodas and some do not. While I have a great deal of respect for doctors I feel I still have to do research and know for myself what I should do because only I know my body. I didn't follow the liquid diet because the liquid diet is to help reduce the size of your liver pre surgery. My liver function is normal. I cut back and did not go crazy, but I also did not go liquid all the way. I lost 6 pounds that week :) I don't drink soda. There are people on here that do. The theory is it could stretch your sleeve. I am not sure if the doctor's are right, but I don't mess with soda just in case they are. Many people say soda is ok, but I am too chicken to take that risk. I don't do everything everyone tells me and I question the system a lot, but I know too many times where my grandfather would be like no you asshold doctor I have this and they wouldn't listen. A eye doctor blinded him, he had a heart attack while the doctor was telling him it was a panic attack. I will never be an uninformed patient.

THANK YOU! I have actually been talking to a gal from another site who is local and she is doing AMAZING - a size 14 to a 2 since December and she eats steak and she also said she went right to the mushy food when she got home - Ramen Noodles, and didnt have a problem. I am not going to push my luck though - I won't try soda though I love it - that's a big reason I gained so much over the last few years

I think we all take our own responsibility. I have had great experiences with US doctors and horrible ones too. Everyone keeps squacking about the strip mall vs the "real hospital" - I had a great result from a plastic surgeon in his office OR and horrible ones 6 times over 6 months with one that did hers in the hospital.

  7. I hate it when I have to learn things the hard way. I haven't had times where I've thrown up just feeling stuffed. When eating and I'm full I get a cloudy visual sensation in my brain and I know I'm done so o stop. Today I ate pastrami and some onion rings and I was full. I am going to start measuring my food starting tomorrow morning. I would hate to stretch my sleeve and gain weight. :)

I have been talking to a local gal that I met on the forum and she's 6 months out from hers and doing awesome. She told me the same thing - trial and error - I just hope I don't have much error lol I hate to be sick so I guess it will be another 5 weeks (that's about when I will be back to eating at least mushy food) before I can start testing the waters with the foods I am able to eat. One thing I really hope I can tolerate at least a little is a creamy salsa - I LOVE mexican food and I have a yummy salsa that I love - it's not chunky in any way and I was kind of hoping I could use maybe a little tiny bit on egg beaters once I scramble them up

  8. I was following the liquid diet, but then I read on here that a lot of folks didn't even have a pre-op diet. I did follow it, but not all the way. I had really good blood work so I wasn't too worried about my liver.

No disrespect here but why would anyone base their own diet and body on what others do here? I only have to be on 3 days preop liquid and others have practically ripped my head off because they have to be on it for 2 weeks - well they are also over 300 pounds and I am 170 so there is a big difference. I am not taking any advice other than my doctors

  9. UWish, of course everyone is different, but I barely used the morphine pump in the hospital. Youre so groggy from the anesthesia, that all you want to do is sleep. The nurse kept telling me to use it if I was in pain, but all I wanted was for them to leave me alone and let me sleep. I think I used it twice, only because they wouldnt leave me alone. When I got home, I only took the liquid pain meds twice too. The pain is bad, but its not unbearable IMO. If youre worried about your reaction to the pain meds, unless there ate other issues with your surgery, you could probably get through without it. In my case, the meds made me feel sick so it wasnt a hardship to not take it. Good luck!

Thanks - and yeah I know it's going to be up to me - I still remember a snotty preop nurse years ago shortly after I had gotten clean that came up to me and handed me a presurgery valium and I said no thank you and I told her that I had only been out of rehab for 6 months - she got all snippy and rolled her eyes and said "Whatever". I came straight up off the gurney and said pardon ME???? Yeah WHATEVER to you too, now get out of my room - you are no longer a part of my surgical team. When my surgeon came in I told him what had gone on and he got red in the face and stormed out of the room to go find the nurse and gave her a good reaming. lol

  10. Congrats! Right after surgery I was so hungry but couldn't have anything orally. I was really thirsty, wanting Water. I remember thinking: "WTH, I'm not suppost to be hungry." I then pushed the morphine pump. Needed to just sleep. Got home 3rd day and couldn't sleep at all. Welcome to the LOSER's CLUB! Rock that sleeve! ;)

LOL Just had to laugh - "I then pushed the morphine pump" Yeah that's the ticket - make it go away so I can forget about it for awhile! lol

That's what I will be doing I am sure. Thinking to myself oh this hurts so .... BAM ! I'm out

Seriously though I am a little freaked out about this aspect of it - I have been clean and sober since Jun 2001 and I have always refused any pain meds since then. I pushed through the pain of 6 breast reconstructions with no paid meds. I even had all of my teeth pulled a few years ago and got dentures all in the same day with no pain meds. I seem to have a high tolerance for pain anyway so hopefully this won't be too bad. I hope anyway

  11. In my closet I am having trouble parting with alot of my xl tops, sweaters, jackets, and suit jackets. I am in disbelief that I will not be able to wear them again. Yes, this is insane. But this weekend, I will clean all the cloths out that are too big. I own 1 pair of jeans, 4 blouses, and some new under wear. oh and 1 new bra. Not much of a wardrobe. My closet will be empty. Then it's my drawers. I can't even wear my exercise cloths, they are way toooooo big. LOL.... I really do love it though. It's a new me.... ;)

I have clothes in my closet that I can get BACK into - size 8's - so I am covered with jeans and tops til I go under that (if I do which I hope to) but as far as getting rid of xl tops - that's not going to happen - I LIKE wearing flowy tops - always have. Even when I was 115 pounds I still wore 3X mens sweatshirts with leggings sometimes. But I sure am looking forward to getting back into my size 8 jeans that's for sure.

  12. I had what seemed like exactly the same thing at about 5 weeks out. I put hydrogen peroxide on it and then neosporin. Kept it covered during the day to prevent irriation from clothing. It finally went away, but took a few weeks. Everything is fine now (at 2 1/2 mos.).

Everything I have read says NO neosporin - it's too greasy and it actually impedes healing. Hmmm

  13. I have read. The entire thread,,,, and I can't help but assume that this was started by a fake. There is NO way this person has gone thru the entire process of education and approval,,, countless appointments,,, and surgery, and truly be this ignorant. I hate people that say stupid things just to see who and what wthey can get riled up. Way to abuse an informative, supportive forum for people going theu the biggest change of their lives!!!

I got that impression now too. As a newbie here I didn't get it til I started reading more into it. But never know, maybe there are some people that are this uninformed? Hopefully not but ....

  14. i couldnt swallow the burger can you please read carefully ?

I think you are being very hostile to people trying to help you but my first thought was as some others - why are you even trying to eat a cheesburger 7 weeks out? I haven't had surgery yet but even I know better.

  15. Ugh, small hiccup in my plans. My aunt who was supposed to go with me to Mexico cant get the time off of work. Its totally understandable and im not angry or mad or anything but just a little more apprehensive about going alone. I REALLY REALLY wish my husband was going with me but by that time he'll be working in Alaska (he leaves april 18th). Im a tough girl and I dont fear going alone, just wish I had someone to be there for me when I wake up...

Anyway....still looking for someone who will be in TJ the same time as me June 13th thru the 18th!

Hope you are done and not having a rough time. Be sure and post when you get time. June 27th is getting closer for me - I screwed up and thought I read the "no ibuprofren" was the 3 days prior but now I see it's 2 weeks so OOPS - I always take ibuprofren for morning headaches so no more now I guess til after surgery.

  16. I'm sorry I don't know Jerusalum Hospital's location. But there is a tourist zone with shops for pottery and you can ask the staff at the hospital if it is within walking distance. But if not, taxis are cheap. Get someone at the hospital to tell you what to say to a cab driver to get to the tourist zone with all the cute shops (which is about 1o minutes walk straight southwest from the boarder crossing. Then when you are ready to leave the shopping "Gringo Zone" just ask another cabbie to take you to Jerusalem Hospital and make sure you give him the address with the cross street because there's a hundred tiny hospitals all over TJ and you want to make sure the cabbie takes you to the right one. Have fun!!

I know "cross street speak" lol You must too being from California. I went back to my small hometown last summer in Illinois and asked someone for directions and I said oh just tell me the cross streets - they looked at me like I had 3 heads but someone sitting nearby laughed cause she was from Arixzona too. Anyway YEAH on the pottery and shopping ! Always up for shopping and I love out of the way places with unique things. If I buy too much hopefully I can send it home by postal. Went shopping with my best friend today at a mall and was looking at some really cute tank tops and I almost bought some in the 2 X large (I have big boobs lol) and I had to stop myself cause I know I won't be that size anymore soon. Thanks for the tips

  17. I've been walking across the TJ boarder for 9 years and walking the 10 minutes to my band-doc's office and I always feel safe. You'll probably walk passed a costco, a Home Depot, a bunch of fast food places and supermarkets. My point is that you are walking in an area that looks a bit diry and rough by U.S. standards but look around and you see a huge population of middle-class mexicans doing their shopping, taking the kids for a happy meal and going about their lives.....in a more run-down, but I believe, essentially safe place. Good Luck!

I am excited at seeing Mexico if only for a small part. I know alot of my friends go to Rocky Point for the annual bike trip there and I never had a passport, now that I do I can make that ride if I want to now. Are there any markets with things like pottery or "touristy stuff" near Jerusalem Hospital? I am hoping I can at least enjoy one day of getting out and taking some pictures and doing a little shopping.

  18. I hit there about 1 and did not have my surgery until the next day at 3. Too much sitting around. A couple of the the other people that were there the next day got in about 1 quickly prepped for sx and by 4 were in surgery. Dr. Kelly does not typically start his sx until the afternoon bc of the schedules of some of the docs that do sx with him.

I am soooo glad I am flying in the nite before and I will be in Tijuana that nite before my surgery already then according to the patient advocate I will be in and out of surgery before the normal day group gets in from San Diego - means me getting to come home a day eariler too. I am not the most patient person in the world (Ok so I suck at it!!!) and for me to have to sit and wait I would go insane without my laptop and being able to do some work right up til they call me for surgery. lol I had a friend that asked if I wanted some company and I told her I would probably not feel up to having any company around me anyway and I now have decided to get my own hotel room on the nite they would normally send me to the recovery house so I can have a room alone and not be with a bunch of people i don't know plus I will be working from my hotel room anyway and the hospital probably too.

  19. In the hospital I was given a bunch of two ounce medicine cups. They had me fill them with liquid and drink one every 15 minutes. I also had a sheet with the time in 15 minute increments on it and each time I drank a medicine cup within a 15 minute period, I marked it on the sheet. It was a great way to keep track and so the nurses could see how much I was drinking At Walmart in the paper goods section, they have these little two ounce cups with lids. They come 50 to a pack. You could get some of those and try to drink one every 15 minutes. Keep a tick mark for each one you drink. It might help the fluids from seaming so overwhelming because those containers are so small and drinking one in a 15 minute period seems easy.

    Good luck to you!

Hmm that gives me a good idea. Why not take a Water bottle (I have several that I drink all the time and re-use anyway from the gallon jogs I fill up with good water) and make tick marks on that to make sure you are drinking enough? Hmm where's my black marker? lol

  20. Haha! I am in the southern hemisphere so it is winter here and very cold!

Sent from my iPad using VST

Ahhhhh I just noticed your location. Send some of that cold here. But only a little - when it gets to 70 we pull our leather jackets out and when it hits 50 the full riding gear comes out - chaps, full face masks, gauntlet gloves lol But it's still better than snow :)
