Just Beginning My Gastric Sleeve Journey

wow, so sorry to hear that--that is crazy. not that you should have to share your personal information with her, but it may come down to talking about all the things this surgery will help you with, if you have comorbid conditions. i agree with likasulema about speaking with someone else (over her head?) if she continues to deny. i hope this all works out for you...

    Unexpected Response From Co-worker

I agree with Lissa: it's hard enough telling ppl abt WLS, because on some level you're "admitting" that you're seriously overweight and becoming very vulnerable in front of them in that moment...

    Unexpected Response From Co-worker

What?! Good for you for giving it a minute before reacting--that could've gotten ugly
  8. I had many of my pre op appts yesterday, and when the psychologist asked me about a goal, I said I wanted to lose about 100 pounds. He said that I might be being a little too ambitious, and that I would probably only lose about 60 pounds within the first year. But I didn't say I was wanting to lose 100lbs in the first year, that's just my ultimate goal. Am I being too optimistic? Is he just trying not to get my hopes up?
  9. Wow! That's impressive...it took me 55mins to walk a 5K in september--go 'head on, lady!!b:)

    Unexpected Response From Co-worker

Seraphina--thanks, girly...it's kinda messed up because i never had any intention of teliing everyone i work with, making some big announcement at a staff meeting or anything, i'm just not that tight will all of them. This woman was one of the "chosen few" And i do see the not telling anyone; if i were still at my previous job, i may have gone that way too...anyway, two days post op is so exciting! Can't wait to hear about your progress. Do my thing i shall, right along with you! Thanks again!

    Overly-ambitious Weight Loss Goal?

Thanks for the feedback! I have every intention of following the doctor's and nutritionist's plans, so hopefully I will be successful. luv-a-bull, I don't have a date yet, but fingers crossed for january. good luck on the 13th--that's so close!

    Overly-ambitious Weight Loss Goal?

Thanks for putting this all in perspective, Rick. My official weight yesterday at the medical center was 239, so yes, I was thinking the same thing, that 100lbs would put me in the upper range of "normal." I was kind of surprised that he said that to me--maybe I was carrying the weight particularly well that day

Just Beginning My Gastric Sleeve Journey

ok, so everything went well yesterday, saw the psychologist, dietitian, PA, and a few other people. the dietitian told me that i should start getting 70g of protein now, and though i don't necessarily have to lose before the surgery, i should not be gaining more weight at this point. she helped me come up with a couple of goals for now about eating and exercising--started the eating part today, exercise starts monday after work. now i have to get the official referral from my PCP, wait to be scheduled for a pulmonary function test, which is supposed to only take 10 minutes, and i have an EGD, which is set for 12/21. so hopefully i can be in the january sleevers club!
  17. Well put, babigrl! I can only imagine how much better you felt (even before getting responses) after sending out that letter. I haven't told my parents or brother yet; I'm trying to wait until I have a date, but I'm a little nervous about that conversation. I likely will tell them over the phone, but I may steal some of the points you make here, if that's okay

    Gastric Sleeve Appointments Overwhelming

Hi Aboutmethistime! I am self pay, so my process is a little different, but I did an online seminar in mid-October, had my initial appt yesterday, and I have to have 2 other visits (pulmonary function test, and EGD) this month. They told me I will likely have the surgery 6-8 weeks from now, mostly depending on the surgeon's schedule. That's okay with me--worst case scenario, I'll get sleeved around my birthday (2/14). New life, new birth--sounds good! Good luck with all of your appointments--this is going to be great!

Just Beginning My Gastric Sleeve Journey

Hi vf59! good to hear from someone who has had the same doctor(s). i'm headed to bluegrass bariatric tomorrow for the pre op. i was wondering, how soon after you finished all the preliminaries did you have your surgery? i'm hoping that because i'm self pay, i can get it pretty soon.

    In The Beginning...

Hi waterlover, i'm in the US and i have insurance, but it only covers the lapband (and i'd have to gain weight and upgrade my plan to qualify), so i'm self-paying for the sleeve. i'm probably not much help in terms of going to mexico, as i plan to be sleeved here in kentucky. but i just wanted to welcome you to the boards, and i hope you are able to find what you're looking for!

    Pre-op Blues!

wow, i feel the same way, and i don't even have a date yet! i've been trying really hard not to buy clothes, while fighting the urge to pack up everything in my closet and take it to the goodwill! i feel so uncomfortable in my clothes, when i'm sure i wasn't as aware of that feeling a couple of months ago...part of me wants to go on a diet, just to show the doctors that i can be disciplined; another part of me feels like what is the point, i might as well eat everything in sight since i'm planning on having the surgery(i guess that's the "food funeral" thing  )...nope, you are definitely not alone.
  25. hi, indi1. i agree with favoredone--if you can find another surgeon you're comfortable with, go for it--in the grand scheme of things, your well-being (and financial situation) are more important than a surgeon you've spoken to one time losing a patient. he'll probably shrug it off, while for you, a lot more is riding on you being able to get it done this year. just my two cents.
