    Fiber ~ need ideas

There is not a better source of fiber in the known universe than plain fiber one cereal. Even the 1/2 cup serving will meet your daily fiber needs. Yes it has a few carbs, but it has no sugar so it won't trigger cravings. Even the glycemic index diet gurus say this is the one processed carb worth eating for the fiber content.

    May 2013 Sleevers!

I went on full liquids 10 days before surgery and lost 15 pounds. Basically nothing but Protein shakes and Soup broth. All I wanted. I didn't have to go hungry. I guarantee you'll lose it like that. It's just not sustainable over the long haul. If it was, we wouldn't need surgery. But if you need to lose some weight quick by a certain date, this will do it.

    May 2013 Sleevers!

Brooke....I'm a May 2012 sleever. All I can say is....best decision I ever made. This whole time, my mantra has always been "think where you'll be a year from now." Every time I things got tough, that's what I told myself. I've been telling myself that since I started my 6 month supervised diet way back in November 2011. I kept saying it right through the pre op diet, and the post op liquids. Still telling myself that. But here it is getting close to a year post op and I feel like I have a new life. Yes, I'm still me...with all the flaws and stresses that come with that. But so many doors are open now that weren't before. And I have more hope for the future than I ever thought possible. I am brimming with optimism and enthusiasm. No more hiding, no more excuses. Yes it takes work. It is certainly not "easy." There are times when you're going to want to take a hammer to your scale. And there are going to be times when you'll want to drown your frustrations in a plate full of unhealthy food. But you fight those battles and prevail. And one day, maybe this time next year, you wake up and realize that you are a new person in a new body with a new attitude. Makes everything worthwhile.

Dehydration long term & dizziness anyone?

I actually resolved my issue by increasing my water intake. I started logging my fluid intake and realized it was not as high as I thought. So I got it back up to 128oz per day of water with some propel zero mixed in 2-3 times per day and my dizzy spells ceased to exist.
  6. You guys are suffering from head hunger. It feels so real, but it's not. And liquids will not make you feel full. Once you start on solid foods, believe me the feeling of fullness will come very quickly and easily. Until you get to that point, yeah it's tough. But just think how skinny you're going to be this time next year. It will make it all worth while. And for those of you thinking you're not losing fast enough....SMH!!! 10 pounds in 2 weeks....that's fast enough. Don't compare your numbers to other people's losses. The weight will come off if you follow the plan. Be strong and soon this tough time will be a distant memory.
  7. Sounds like something you should have when you're cleared for full foods. I bought those turkey pepperoni slices and microwaved them for about 1 minute. Came out like little meat flavored potato chips...yum.
  8. There are plenty of physiological reasons why losing it "on your own" doesn't work very well. The fact that you did it so many times makes it harder....your metabolism was probably shot. Either way, the so called "risks" of WLS are negligible compared to the risks of staying obese, even for the average obese person. Someone in your shoes...even more so. You are definitely doing the right thing. Of all WLS's I believe the sleeve has the best ratio of high success/low complications. So really, you're odds are very high of success. I'm always a PM away for questions or moral support. Good luck and I love your shirt...I have the matching shorts. That's how I got my name.

    BP problems

It makes sense. As you lose weight BP is getting lower. Heart rates get lower as well. There are built in systems to compensate for hypotension (arteries constrict when standing for instance) but they may be underdeveloped as they have not been needed. At least that's my hypothesis.

    BP problems

I was having the same issue starting about 2 months ago. 3 doctors told me it was orthostatic hypotension, altho no BP test ever confirmed that. I had every heart, brain and blood test they had. They could find nothing wrong except a very low resting heart rate. The cardiologist wanted to give me a pacemaker, I swear. Anyway, I started tracking my water intake and realized it was not as high as I thought it was. So I started tracking and drinking 128oz per day, along with a few packets of propel zero for extra electrolytes and the dizzy spells went away. I don't know if the extra water resolved it but the couple of times since then that I've felt dizzy was when I was way behind on my water.

    Cholesterol seven months out

My HDL is in the proper range. My LDL is a tad high. And my doc looked me straight in the face and said it's a non issue.

    Cholesterol seven months out

Interesting topic because I'm reading Gary Taube's book right now and cholesterol is one of the main topics. Specifically, how there has never been any proof associating high blood cholesterol or high fat diets with higher mortality rates or higher heart disease. But certain pharmaceutical companies made that leap when they first developed statins because it made their drugs look like life savers, and certain government officials jumped all over the idea without any scientific proof...and thus the myth was born that has continued to shape medical doctrine to this day. At least, that's what the book is about. Another great example of this is the food pyramid. Remember that thing that told us to eat 11 servings a day of starches to stay healthy? Yeah, same thing.

    399!

That's fantastic. Soon you're going to be in the 200's. You're going to be a new man. Great job. As a former 400 pounder myself, all I can say is it feels like being in someone else's body now.

I think I've figured it out...

It's one thing when you see the same posts over and over again. That is bad enough. And yeah, plenty of people ask questions that could easily be answered with a simple search....that gets slightly old but it's not the end of the world. But what makes me want to go away is someone who is 2 weeks out of surgery, and over run with emotions and head hunger...cursing me out because I suggest that they not eat a cheeseburger just yet. Somehow that makes me an unsupportive ass. That really drives people away.

    Protein pills....?!

All the ones I've seen are predigested casien protein, which is a very slow digesting protein. It's basically the opposite of whey protein in that sense, as whey is super fast absorbing which is why that is what we are recommended to take. Also, most are only 1 gram of protein per pill. So think about how many you would have to take....and they are horse pills. You could get a better concentration of casien protein in cottage cheese and it would be easier to swallow frankly. 4 oz of cottage cheese contains about 11 grams of protein...imagine eating 11 of those pills rather than 4 spoonfuls of cottage cheese.
  16. Ain't it funny. Since I was 10 years old...anything that caused me to go to the doctor was blamed on obesity. I could get hit upside the head with a 2x4 and it was because I was overweight. I guess if I had been skinnier I could have gotten out of the way....I don't know. But I asked an orthopedic doc one time if he ever had skinny patients with knee injuries and he said yes, all the time. I said well tell me whatever it is you tell them, instead of just telling me to lose friggin weight. Sorry to take this thread off topic, I just had to rant. Back on topic now....

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

You guys are all doing great. The big payoff is going to be that day when you can just take off for a run with no thought to distance or time. Just run as far as you want, whatever makes you happy. There will be a time very soon when you all will be running down a trail, thinking about your life and your weight loss, family, friends...and you'll realize you're not thinking at all about running. You're just doing it. It's a great feeling. Keep it up everybody.

    Exercise questions

If you think the forum on BB.com is bad, don't read the forum on Myfitnesspal. Holy Christ. According to them, anyone who eats less than 1200 calories a day will be dead in a week.

who's eating the most carbs/protein daily?

I just recently upped my calories so my protein has averaged 184g/day for the last 7 days, and carbs have averaged 64g/day...but net carbs would be more like 40g/day. And I run alot and work out everyday, same as Fiddleman. I'm finding I don't really need the carbs as much as common dogma suggested I did. The body can be trained to burn fat for fuel more efficiently, thus reducing the need for glycogen as fuel (carbs). Of course, that depends on the type of exercise you're doing. Endurance training is ideally suited for this approach. If I wanted to be an NBA basketball player, where I had to sprint up and down the court all night, I probably would fall flat out very quickly.
