    lap band hell

I had dry heaves for three days couldnt even leave the hospital it was the diladid that did me in once I stopped taking it and went on liquid vicodin I was fine a year later and 70lbs gone so Im happy. Listen if you think once that stops there wont be anymore bad days Im here to tell you and I think anyone who has been banded can tell you there are bad days. When food gets stuck, when you get a fill and it sucks royally. Dont be so discouraged its too new you will find a lot of days you will want to rip it out especially when you have an intolerance for foods you want but cant eat because they will tear up your stomach. It will get better but there will always be bad days at one time or another.
  2. People think because you are big your stomach is big. My surgeon who has done 3000 plus surgeries said it doesnt matter how big a person is everyone he has ever operated on stomach was the same size. If you need more than a 10 cc band then you should opt for one of the other procedures. Bigger band tighter restriction can in the end cause necrosis. I wouldnt want 14cc around my stomach. No one realizes that there hasnt been a lot of research on the band long term. You are constricting an organ so 20 plus years down the road what will happen???? Do we know. Will the stomach be able to keep a band that long if not then what. Take it out? People think about it. I have been in the medical field for 30 years done much research, worked in surgery and even a 400lb person had the same size stomach as a 200lb person. So many people I have seen after 5 to 6 years getting it out. Not trying to scare anyone but who has had the band more than 10 years. Even a hip or knee replacement doesnt last more than 15 years.
  3. I was a year post op before I had my first fill. If you have a good surgeon the only way he should be filling your band is 1 you are scrounging for food 2 your weight loss has stopped 3 if you can eat more than a normal portion. Steak may never be something you can eat its just the way it is with the band. I think your ready for a fill.

    Need a protein shake

muscle milk is not a good protein shake and why its just what it says its for those building muscle. People you need protein isolates whey protein isolates and that is it. Carnation instant breakfast gives you no protein. You should be drinking a protein powder with at least 30 to 50 grams of protein in it. Read your labels its not all good. My doctor told us we could use carnation instant breakfast if we could not afford or didnt like the tast of other protein powders but he said it is not a good source of protein at all.
  6. Relax you probably think you have fluid in your band most doctors dont put any or leave very little after surgery. Your swelling has gone down and now you can eat. It happens and if he did put that much fluid in your band at surgery then shame on him and you need to not see him again. That is just wrong so is doctors putting 14 cc bands in people. Its just wrong. You probably dont have fluid he might have put that much in to see that it was working properly but Im sure he took some out. or most of it out

    Swollen?itchy?hurt? Annoyed

You shouldnt be using dressings folks it harbors bacteria. Take them off and let your wounds breath fresh air. If you are demabonded you dont need a dressing if you have sutures you dont need a dressing. Undress those wounds and let them breath.

    Diet After First Fill

I just had my first fill after one year. It didnt hurt at all. Dont eat a big meal 12 hours before the fill and if you have a morning appointment dont eat before you go or just eat light. like a protein shake. I dont agree with those big cc bands 9 to 10 should be the most. Surgeons are pushing those larger cc bands and you will end up getting too restricted. After a fill liquids only for 24 hours and soft food for three days after that is my surgeons guide lines. I dont see why anyone would need a 12 to 14 cc band its just not right. You dont have to crush your meds you should be fine with them. It is an office procedure unless they cant find your port or have trouble accessing it. For those not having surgery yet please do not let your doctor put in a large cc band its not needed. I work in surgery and you know whats happening they are coming back and getting them out.

    A few questions

I went to my seminar in May of 09 six months to your primary, six months of a nutritionist and then after that its submitted to your insurance after approval it is usually schedule the next month so from May til December 14 09 was my surgery. My preops included stress test, sleep study, a ton of labs, chest xray, upper GI yes it is a long wait but unless your paying cash pretty much all insurances make you wait six months.

    Gas problems

Im a year post op and gax ex is on my grocery list. Please do not buy ice cream you will sabatoge yourself by doing that you should be drinking your protein shakes before anything. Then the rest. If you dont get in the protein your hair will fall out. Gas unfortunately with most of us never goes away after banding its part of it. If your doctor didnt tell you that then I am.

    2 years post band trouble

When you have gastritis anything you put in your stomach will irritate it. You have to let the stomach rest for a few days and drink only clear liquids. Its not fun I have it I dont throw up from it but when it acts up I let my stomach rest and it all goes fine. Are you drinking caffiene if you are then stop. Cinnamon and other spices will irritate it. I cant drink coffee anymore or eat certain spices. You need your band emptied and the stomach time to rest. Gastritis is an inflammation of the inside of the stomach caused by something you are eating. You have to let the stomach rest. Empty your bands and go from there start over but it will subside eventually

    Just banded

Drink it whether you want to or not. Its that simple you have to get the liquids in and protein. If you dont you are starting out on a hell journey.
  15. You liver has to be retracted during surgery for everyone. A large liver or fatty liver can cause the instruments to nick it Im not trying to scare you but thats why the preop diet if your BMI is a certain number.

    I feel like I'm losing a friend...

Each and everyone of us got the way we were/are because we found comfort in food. Your not losing a friend you are losing and enemy that made your life miserable. Relearning good eating habits is a challange but I can honeslty say that today a year later I would any day take a sweet orange over a 500 calorie piece of cake. We dont realize how good other healthy food taste until you see that it wasnt so bad after all. I love my shakes with blueberries in them. I replaced my sweets with sugar free hard candy. Its a game with our mind you see because its so nice to get that high from food then crash within 20 minutes of eating it. I dont have that up and down feeling anymore, I sleep well and I dont regret giving up that friend that put me through years of disgusting hell.

    I HATE MY SCALE!!!

I got a 10 dollar one at cvs and it has been the best. It is always the same weight as at the Dr.s office so I know its right. I wouldnt spend a lot of money on a scale. Its just a scale.
  19. I dont know why you would be having diarrhea but stomach noises are going to be there probably forever. Its just part of it.

    thinking removal....sound familiar?

Well its been a year for me and I can say working in surgery I have seen many come through there with a removal because of the same thing. I dont throw up but have bouts of bad gas. I dont want mine out but I think if I had the problems you are having I would. Maybe your doctor can remove the band and do the sleeve at the same time if you dont have and necrosis in the stomach. Living without it would be better than having anxiety about eating. Be well and do whats right for you. Im not always happy with mine but until I have issues like that Im fine. If I was vomiting I would have it removed in a heart beat. Good luck.

    I HATE MY SCALE!!!

I was happy too when I cleaned out my closet and all the size 26 to 20 went by by but I had a lot of nice plus size clothes that went to good will. I am now in a 16 and yes I was happy the day I was 199 I weighed myself like 10 times because I wanted to make sure that was right. But thank God I could give them darn fat clothes to someone else to wear. Im not buying much more until I lose another 30lbs.

    2nd Band and failing again...

You havent failed your doctor failed you. First of all I dont think anyone should have a band that is more than 9 to 10cc's if you needed more than that then you should have opted for a different surgery. People dont realize that a bigger band is not wise if you only need to lose 100lbs and anyone getting the band should only have to lose between 75 to 100 lbs. People dont realize that and they choose the band when they are 300lbs plus overweight and should have had the sleeve or the bypass. Originally the band was only to make those who were 100lbs overweight and doctors agreed to give it to those who were far more obese because they wouldnt make money. You are not the failure here your doctor failed you. I wouldnt consider another surgery but if you have this band out and can have the sleeve done that is what I would do. Doctors who are inexperienced and just want money dont care about their patients. Its hard to find another surgeon once you have been operated on by one but I surely would find someone who would guide me in the right direction.
  23. I take regular vitamins and I dont have a problem swallowing them I get the GNC vitamins they are oval shaped. I havent had a problem swallowing vitamins.
  24. Well I had my first one on the 30th a year after surgery yep a whole year. The needle wasnt the issue with me but I could feel the band tightening around my stomach oddly enough. That wasnt pleasant. Its over in minutes he put four in and took two out. They make you swallow water after the fill and when you can swallow it with no problem then that is your fill point. Do not and I repeat do not leave that office until you know that you can swallow. And it also helps if you dont eat a big meal about 12 hours before a fill and I didnt eat the morning of. I didnt know what to expect so I was just cautious.

    I HATE MY SCALE!!!

Do you have a digital scale? I have one and it doesnt matter where I put it I get the same weight. However I too am obsessed with weighing myself every single day morning and night if Im the same weight at night as in the morning I know I will be less the next day. If you dont have a digital scale then get one it shouldnt be varying that much no matter where you put it.
