  1. My preop diet isn't bad, but I screwed up the other day. I bought something I thought was sugar free until I added it into myfitnesspal.com. By that time, I'd already eaten it. It was "no sugar added," which is very different. Stupid labels. Still, I have managed to avoid the "foods to avoid" on my preop diet list. My preop wasn't all liquid, so it made it easier to keep to it. It was hardest when I was doing things that I used to eat while doing. We went to the races Friday and Saturday. I would normally be buying fried foods from the concession stand. Instead, I watched while my family ate the fried foods. Saturday, I brought raw veggies with me. I snacked on them whenever any of my family was eating the fried stuff. It helped.

    Introducing myself

Welcome, Melanie! I'm a mom of four too. I have surgery today (August 9th).

    2nd wave of All Stars!

PhatGurl, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma. I'm glad you were able to reschedule. My surgery is today at 10:45 a.m. I thought about taking my laptop to the hospital, but I think I am going to pass on that. Instead, I've loaded up my Kindle. Good luck to everyone else who is having surgery today as well as throughout this week and month!
  4. Thanks so much, Sara!

  5. Sara and Jen, you two are way too nice! She brought fudge! Actually, I think it was just a weird coincidence that had her bringing everything over. It was just making me frustrated at the time. After she brought the fudge, my husband told me I'd been rude because I didn't socialize with our company (his parents). She may be considering WLS herself. I think she is waiting to see how I do.
  6. What customizations did you make to the myfitnesspal? I signed up, and I'm trying to figure out what I should be tracked. I started my pre-op diet, and I wish I could set the calories a little differently. I am slsherwood51 there.
  7. Congratulations, Rootman!

    How do I put this?

I was thinking the same thing as AutumnLily -- reverse psychology. If he knew your history of losing over 100 pounds without the sleeve, he might have thought this was just the comments to push your buttons. He has experience in the results to expect, but he probably has some experience in dealing with different personalities as well. I hope his comment was designed to get you motivated to prove him wrong and that he isn't just an asshat. Great job on your loss so far!
  9. Today I drove 45 minutes to have my psych eval only to find out that my appointment is actually Friday. My husband said (joked) this didn't bode well for my evaluation. I swore it was today, and I even called the psychiatrist to let her know I was waiting. She was ill today and had canceled everything. After I arrived back home and rechecked my paperwork, I realized I was the one who was wrong. My doctor was supposed to fax my recommendation letter to my surgeon by today. My surgeon hadn't received it as of 1:30 today, but my doctor is saying it was faxed this morning. I have this giant list of things to do and people to contact, and I feel like if I'm not careful I'm going to miss something. Tomorrow I have to drive over an hour to attend a support group meeting. I teach, so I'm not working 40 hours right now. If I was, I don't think I'd be able to get everything done and stay on track of everything. I've been keeping all of my information in a file folder with multiple pockets. It seems to help, but I still screwed up this morning. Linda

    My First SV

Congrats! I'm so happy for you!
  11. I have four kids, and they are older, but I am still wondering what to say to them about my surgery: before/after/during. For the most part, they haven't asked a lot. I have 3 girls ages 17, 15 and 14 and a 12 year old boy. They are all in the healthy weight range. My 15 year old was with me during the initial seminar and my doctor's appointment and endoscopy, so she knows the most. The 14 year old has been at camp this last week and has some questions and concerns. I think she is a bit worried about me having a surgery. The other two haven't talked about it very much, but I expect more questions. So far, the talking has been about what I will eat and family meals -- will they need to eat like I do, for instance. Today, my 14-year-old was telling me that hospital food is bad, and she'd bring me some McDonald's when I was in there for my surgery. I had to explain that I couldn't eat McDonald's because my stomach would be healing. I didn't talk long term about no McDonald's. I figured baby steps for that discussion. Any advice from those that are doing this and/or have been there? Thanks!
  12. Thanks, everyone. I appreciate all of the feedback.

    Preop doubts....

Good luck, Mommyto2! I think the last minute doubts is normal. I remember wanting to change my mind during all four times I gave birth to a child -- it happened right about 30 minutes before the actual birth. LOL! I just wanted to leave my body to do the work and go away some where else. My husband asked me something very similar. I've told him that I've done it. I can lose the weight. My problem is keeping it off. I haven't been below 200 pounds since 2005. I haven't been able to get there on my own. See you on the loser's bench!

    All-Stars Preo-op diet thread

Pre op diets shrink your liver, so there is less chance of it being in the way during your surgery. Your liver sits on top of your stomach.

    Anyone Else in August?

Good luck to you too, Debbie! I saw in another post that you wanted to lose about 130 pounds, so our goals are pretty close too. My doctor said I should lose about 115 pounds. I'm 5'7", so my BMI is 40. I'm glad to get in touch with other people who are going to be going through the same thing "with" me. I was told to plan to spend about two nights in the hospital, and I start my pre-op diet on July 30.

    All-Stars Preo-op diet thread

I start my pre-op diet July 30, which is 10 days before my surgery. I do get to eat solid foods including all of the veggies I want (with some exceptions like corn and potatoes). I did purchase some protein shakes to try as well. I am still figuring out exactly what I'm going to eat and how to do that and still cook "regular" food for my family. I'm not looking forward to the cooking for the family part. I hope to get my kids (who are older) to chip in with cooking more. I don't like cooking most days, and I think I will like it even less when I'm not even cooking for me. LOL

    Fab 40's shout out

I am just a month and change away from being 40 years old, and my BMI is even closer to being 40. Depending on what BMI scale I use, I have a BMI of 38 to 39.5 to 39.9/40. I've started the process to have a VSG. I have attended the initial seminar, found out it is covered by insurance and will attend my first consult with the surgeon next Monday. I am married to a wonderful guy for 17 years, and we have four children. I am enjoying reading about everyone's experiences on this board. I've been blogging and writing about my attempts to lose weight since 2006. I have a lot of written stuff but not much weight loss.
