Day 6 update
Hi all, I have been giving little updates on my progress since surgery. It seems to help me mentally to just jot down whats been happening. Maybe it will help others too. Yesterday I overdid it a little by taking my 13 year old shopping for school supplies and running a few errands. I had my husbands truck since he took my car to work. Its a tall quad cab dodge and our driveway is on an incline. It was hard to get in it but once there driving was fine. We only stayed out a few hours but I was pooped by the time we got back. I was really sore last night and it was hard to sleep soundly. I woke with a little nausea... my first nausea! I did not throw up but my body was screaming for something warm. I made decaf coffee and sipped that. I noticed gurgling and gas moving so when I tried to pass the gas a lot more came with! TMI I know... so I had a touch of diahrea sp? but now I feel better. So I am calling that my first BM after surgery. It was not bad, no cramping or anything. I have had a bout a half cup of coffee in the last hour and i feel some better now. Still sore from yesterday especially on the left side. Not horrible though. My bandages are itching now. I gained 14 pounds in water weight at the hospital. My right hand where the iv was is still puffy. I had lost 9 pounds with my postop diet and to see that I gained that back plus 5 more was disheartening. I have lost most of that back now. As of yesterday I was within 3 pounds of my preop diet weight. SW 234, preop 225, home from hosp. 239, yesterday 228. I have not weighed this morning. I will keep you all posted on how Im doing. Thanks for listening. Tammi

Problems with getting down vitamins
I bought calcium citrate chews from my drs office. They taste like lemon starburst. I also do the gummy vitamins.. much easier to chew and swallow. I take the chewable iron from my drs. office too and its good. Also, I got b12 subligual pills to put under my tongue and they melt.. all easy to take. Ask your doctor about the calcium and the iron. I got the b12 and the mulitvitamin gummies from Walmart. I am 5 days post op.

When did you feel good post op
I got out of the house today, had surgery on Monday so this is technically day 5. I drove to several places including my drs office to get the chewable iron tablets that I forgot! I am really tired because we also went to two stores for school suppllies! I cant beleive I was able to do that. I am extremely tired now. I need to drink more. I feel almost hungry but I dont think its physical hunger. I think its in my head. I smelled lots of food and it made me want it. When I really think about it though.. I had my days of eating everything because it smelled good. Now I have to get used to my new life. I am excited to start protein drinks again on Monday. I am looking forward to them! I have three weeks liquid diet and then soft food. I will also be happy just to chew again! I am going to rest more this weekend because I have to go back to work on Monday.

When did you feel good post op
I was sleeved Monday too and yesterday was defininately my roughest day. Today seems better but not great. I dont have a lot of pain per say, I just feel blah. I am hoping by day 7, I can go back to work. I really need to because I dont have much leave left. I am looking forward to feeling normal!

Day 2 after surgery
Im day 4 post op. Yesterday I felt very blah. I was barely getting around and I had a bad headache and cramps from getting my Period!!!! Ughhh.. what timing. I just didnt feel well all day. I think it was because I took some phergan and a little lortab and it made me feel like I had been run over by a truck. I have some gas pain but its short and I usually pass it pretty quickly after the pain. I am taking my nexium type meds and I havent had any nausea really. Last night I decided to just take a tylenol easy tab for the headache and cramping. It helped and I slept really well! I didnt take the phenergan or lortab. I got up feeling a little under the weather but much better than yesterday. I have walked twice today for about 5 laps down my street and back. I feel better but only about 50% myself today. I am hoping for 75% tomorrow. I am having trouble finding broth that I like so I will be surfing the net today to find some choices! I hope you feel better today than yesterday! I had to do the deep breathing a lot yesterday because my chest felt tight. I had been coughing some and I thought I might be having trouble with my lungs. Today is MUCH better though! Yay.. no pneumonia! Good luck to all of you. Debbie, hang in there! I am praying it will get better for you! Tammi

Day 2 after surgery
It just erased everything I wrote... Here we go again. Stupid Iv getting in the way. I had heartburn yesterday, all day. The staff thought I was getting in too much liquid, if you can even do that. I cut way back on it but it didnt help much. It was not unbearable just came in little waves but passed quickly too. It was tolerable. I got a shower last night and all my bandages off. That felt good. I get my staples out today and they will put some glue on to hold it. The dr. has not been in yet this morning. Last night I got off the morphine pump and took some liquid lortab. It wasnt that bad. I got it down along with nausea meds and toridal in my drip. I slept like a rock! I didnt even get up to Pee! TMI THIS PART----I noticed some itching in the lower regions so I ask if I could have diflucan for a possible yeast infection. they cut it into three littlel peices and I was able to take it, no problem. I breathe with my spirometer but it cranks up the heartburn. I need clear lungs though so I use it as much as i can remember to. I hope all you guys are having a good experience too. I am plannning on listening to my body today instead of the nurse. If I need to sip, I am going to sip! It doesnt really help the heartburn that much anyway. I was not oversipping after all so today... I am planing to sip! I feel pretty dang good for just having this surgery. No nausea or vomiting. A little heartburn and thats about it. Good luck to all of you who are just starting this journey. I hope you have a good experience too! I am going home today! I will post again to tell how its going there. I am open for questions, should anyone want to ask me. Thanks Tammi

day AFTER sugery
The heartburn isn't even that bad. I'm very happy with my recovery so far. I did walk two miles a day sometimes one mile for the one week preop. Caffeine withdrawal was a b***h but it got better after day two. No caffeine in the hospital so I am thrilled I got it over with! You are going to do great!!

day AFTER sugery
I just want to tell people my story so far. I am one day post op. My surgery was 8/8/2011. All in all its going well. I am still in the hospital on my laptop. I just wanted to give everyone a word of encouragement that might need it who are considering having this surgery. I am doing great. I was so afraid and nervous I didnt really sleep for a week. When I got to my room, I had really great nurses. I was not in any real pain. I asked if I could pee and then walk some. It felt good to walk even though it was soon after surgery. I walked a lot yesterday. I was given nausea meds in my IV and so I have not experienced any nausea so far. I did get serious acid reflux heartburn type pain last night. I lasted all night, I had to slow way down on my sipping ice Water because if increased the heartburn pain. It was more bothersome than painful though. I slept on and off. Its 10:41 today and they gave me some muscle relaxers and bloodthinners. I am on a morphine pump. I dont have to press the button very often though. I was surprised and happy that I have had a fairly smooth ride so far. I have had time to reflect on how wonderful this opportunity really is. My advise to you all is to keep your eye on the prize and just take it one day at a time. You will be happy you gave up caffeine during the liquid diet and got through the headaches. Mine lasted a couple days and it was over. Caffeine is not healthy anyway and I dont plan to go back to it. The liquid diet is a challenge but I just got through it one day at a time, sometimes hour by hour. Muscle Milk banana cream flavor was really good and I hate Protein shakes! We can all do this together~ We owe it to ourselves to finally have the healthy life we want. Feel free to email me or message me anytime during this journey. I am slightly ahead of you and I will answer all your questions to the best of my ability. We are all here for support and its great to know other people are in your shoes too! Hang in there!

My surgery is scheduled for 8am tomorrow! So excited for all of us going tomorrow!!! We will have to keep in touch! We are all going to do great!- Deciding on a Goal Weight?
I am 5'4" and I used to be taller! I dont know how I lost 3/4 of an inch but it happened! I was in the military in my late teens and I remember being 127 lbs going in. I was a perfect size 6 then and in Jr. size it was some 5's or 7's depending on how they were made. I loved my figure then and I didnt have to struggle to keep it. That was college and military. Then my son was born and those days were gone. I am taking them back as of Monday August 8!!!!! I set my first goal for 145 which would make my BMI in normal range. 135 is my middle goal. I want to see how that feels and if I can maintain that. Ultimately, I want to maintain 125 to 130. The chart says I can be as low as 108 but I have never been that small and frankly with my frame (Medium to large) I cant carry that off. You can count my ribs and my pelvic bones stick way out when I am 125. I look like a wasp or dirt dobber as we say in the south. I dont think I will be comfortable that thin. So my goals are similar, even though I am shorter. I think the sizes have changed in the past 10 years or so. At a previous weight loss, I maintained 170 for years and was a perfect size 12. I gained again and then lost back to 170 but was then a 14 and couldnt squeeze in a 12. I dont know what the difference was. I gained all the weight back plus 50 pounds. I am in a 20 in most things as long as the jeans are stretch material. They get loose as the day goes on but out of the dryer, it has to be a 20 or it wont fit. I have no idea what the numbers are going to mean as far as size now adays though. I am so excited to be having surgery MONDAY!!!- Day 3 preop diet
I was having really bad headaches on day 1 and day 2. I just wanted to say that they are finally subsiding!!! Woohooo! I have noticed that while I do get hungry, the protein shakes really do seem to help that. I have survived 2 days and almost 3 and I am getting a sense that I really can do this thing!!!!- caffeine withdrawal??
I am drinking 1 cup of decaf in the am and one after lunch. I am only allowed 2 protein shakes a day but I do get to eat 3 oz of meat and a non starchy vegetable for dinner. My headache is not as bad. No meds today! Woohooo! Its getting better!- caffeine withdrawal??
Yesterday (day 1) the headache started after lunch. I usually drink two cups in the morning and one after lunch. It was crazy painful all evening and even through the night. It woke me up at 5am. I just tried to doze until 7. After I had my shake, it got MUCH better. I am staying hydrated and it is keeping it at a minimum right now. I hope it will be over by the days end. I quite caffeine once when I was pregnant and stopped smoking on the same day and it lasted three days. I was not hydrated though and it could have been the combo that made it so bad. Good luck to you and I hope yours subsides too. Try the protein shake and lots of water.- caffeine withdrawal??
I have until Monday to get over it. I only have a week of preop. It is getting better after my Super wonderful Muscle Milk Banana creme protein shake... that stuff is like crack! Sooo Goood! I am also drinking diet cranberry juice and water. I think the hydration is helping the headache. Thanks so much for everyone who has a suggestion that would help. I will only take tylenol.. thanks for the reminder!- caffeine withdrawal??
I was put on the preop diet yesterday. I used to drink a lot of coffee. I am now suffering from the caffeine withdrawal rebound headace. Any suggestions? Anyone else had this?- Muscle Milk Banana Creme flavor
I am so picky about what I can drink. I hated all protein drinks I had tried and was very worried I couldnt do the liquid protein. I just hate everything. They are chalky, oily, dont mix well, I just cant do it. My DH bought Muscle Milk in the banana creme flavor. I dont even eat bananas. I was like, OH GREAT. I do, however love banana flavored candy, like laffy taffy. I am on day two of my preop liquid diet and have a caffeine headache from hell. I had to drink it. I popped the top before leaving the driveway in case I had to heave. I took a big sip and it was freakin delicious!!!!!! Im telling you it tasted exactly like banana laffy taffy! I love it! I drank it all in short order and wanted more! Also, I felt instantly better. The headache subsided some and I felt like a new person! I am just so dang thrilled to have found a protein drink (20 g per 11 oz) that I dont just like or tolerate, I love! Just thought this might help someone else who is struggling to find a protein drink they can drink.- Protein drink finally - its delicious for my picky tastebuds
I just tried muscle milk banana creme flavor and it was soooo delicious! Seriously, it tasted just like banana laffy taffy. I had not been able to find any protein shakes I could stand yet and I did the happy dance when I found this one! It has 20 grams of protein and only 11 ounces. I took your advice and ordered the cytsport protein drink. It should be arriving soon for after surgery. I am on the preop diet now struggling with caffeine withdrawal. If you like the banana candy, you will love banana muscle milk. Trust.- PRE OP DIET :)
Awesome.. .the caffeine withdrawal headache is really kickin in! I will be glad when that is over too.- Eating Slowly
That sounds so much better to me than a pencil eraser! Whew... I wasnt sure about that... Thanks guys... Please let me know how that works out for you all that have been having trouble. - Surgery Date
