  1. Hi I have problems when I don't spread out my proteins over the day. Sometimes I eat them all at once or only twice per day. Since you have malabsorption with RNY, even though you eat the right amount of proteins you won't get them all unless it's portioned out across 3 or more times per day. If I don't get my proteins eaten correctly I don't lose weight.
  2. I buy an RTD on Amazon called Oh Yeah and get flavors chocolate or strawberry. 32 g protein 220 cal and lactose-free. Also no gluten. I'm intolerant of both. There are more flavors but these are my favorites. I also buy a Labrada brand RTD on Amazon.
  3. I had sleep apnea diagnosed by a sleep study way before my RNY and used a CPAP and oxygen at night. About 5 months after my surgery I went in for another study and was found to no longer have the apnea but now have restless legs which accounted for my sleep not being restful. It was a good thing to have that study because now I don't have to use the CPAP and am raking medicine fir the restless legs. I still use oxygen at night, too. Bottom line? I strongly recommend getting the study. Your resulting diagnosis will mean restful sleep!
  4. Oh my dear.... Potatoes do have nutritional value!!! A baked or boiled potato with skin provided 48% of your suggested daily vitamin C for instance. They are a good source of fiber, B6, vitamin K, and good minerals. In contrast a potato only contributes 1% of your daily suggested fat! Don't load them up with all the crazy stuff because they taste beautiful on their own!!!
  5. Help! I had hiatal hernia and horrible acid reflux before gastric bypass which got fixed at time of bypass surgery. Doc said very tough to fix the hernia. 5 months out and I've had a bout of acid reflux. I thought the bypass was supposed to prevent reflux because there's no acid in the pouch. I read somewhere that an ulcer could be causing the reflux maybe something like that poking through the staple line. Anyone else experiencing this it know what I should do???!

    December post ops

Hi. I haven't posted with y'all yet. My RNY was 12/23/13 and I'm now 5.5 weeks out. I was 234 and am down 55 lbs.i shouldn't complain but I am worried. I'm bummed because I've never really felt my pouch, can eat 2 cups or more of most anything. I get in my protein only eat about 900 CALS per day and am losing 1.5 or so oer week which is good but have stalled once and gained a lb last week! I know I should be happy and am most if time but am afraid that I can eat so much! No dumping just heart pounding if i eat too fast. have not really gotten much from Doc other than "you're one of those who have to measure since you can't feel your pouch..." Past history: had a lap band almost 3 yrs ago started at 284 and lost 125. Then a recurring hiateal hernia recurred big time. Horrible horrible acid reflux 24/7. Gained back 75 lbs because I ate satisfying slider foods. Doc took out band fixed hernia but hernia was back a month later. Let things heal then RNY w/ hernia fix in December. No more acid reflux thank God! Lots of that hernia history probably responsible for not feeling pouch.as I mentioned I have not really gotten much from Doc other than "you're one of those who have to measure since you can't feel your pouch...."
  8. I had the band 2 1/2 yrs ago and lost 100lbs the first year. It worked well for me. Got a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time. Then I stupidly ate some popcorn which got stuck and I had to have most fluid from the band removed. I got fills after to get back where I was but the hiatal hernia came back and I felt terrible. Started eating lotsa slider foods including chocolate. Gained back 50lbs. Had surgery to fix hernia again almost exactly 2 yrs after banding and surgeon wouldn't do it unless he removed the band at same time. We discussed what to do next and I knew I needed a tool to help me lose wt. I was thinking sleeve because bypass scared me. After talking through what had happened all the slider and chocolate I had eaten etc. the doc recommended RNY because I wouldn't be able to cheat. I'm 4 wks post op RNY doing well and feel good about my choice. Think about your triggers and do research on the procedures. The band can work for you and do can bypass. Good luck!

    Scared

Hi I'm almost 4 wks post op. The liquid things I have besides protein drinks are chicken broth and Crystal Light. I buy the ones to make 2qts per packet pour in 4 Dasani bottles mix then pour back into the bottles. That's my 64 oz for the day goal ready to take with me anywhere. You probably know that there are many many flavors. I like the fruity kinds. Lots of other kinds of water flavorers such as ProPel, too. Hang in there!

    Irish Farmer

Hi Beamish I work with potato farmers in Idaho! I chose the bypass because I was troubled with portion size and sweet tooth. The latter helped me make the decision for bypass since I'd also have portion control with the bypass. I'm 16 days post op and doing well. I miss potatoes and definitely will start having them every once in a while starting 6 mo post op! Good for you to do research. I had a lap band which worked wonderfully for 1.5 yrs but I have complications with a hiatal hernia recurring so we took out the band and hope the bypass will help since stomach is smaller and stapled. Good luck to you!
  11. Sorry you're not feeling good. My doc would say go back to puréed food for a few days. I drink Muscle Milk RTD protein and there are many flavors = chocolate, vanilla creme, banana creme. Lactose free which helps me and they have light versions with less sugar. I buy on Anazon but find them in gas station stores and sometimes grocery stores. Good luck and hang in there. I'm 26 days post op bypass and haven't had dumping yet.
  12. Just before I had my 1st fill today, the doctor asked how much solid food it took before I was full. I said 1cu but it's actually more like 2. Stupid me I thought I'd be in trouble if I said more than what I was supposed to be doing. He put 7cc in and when I drank Water it went down okay but I felt full up to my throat. So he took some out then when water went down very easily, he put some back in ended up filling with 4cc total. It doesn't feel like I'll feel full with the 4cc - of course won't know for a few days when back to solid food. Should I have told him it took a lot more than 1cu to feel full before he did the fill and that my weight loss has been due to willpower and less than 1000 calories? I know everyone is different and that some doctors like to go slowly to get to the sweet spot but should I try to get in before my 6 weeks appointment for 2nd fill since I wan't truthful and especially if I don't have restriction from this 1st fill? I'm way worried that I'll get up to that 2cu eating again! Thanks! 3 week pre-op diet lost 12lbs 6 week post-op have lost 23 lbs more...

    Headaches???

Hi, I'm new here. Since I'm intolerant to gluten and lactose I am a severe label reader and content researcher. I found online that some Protein drinks/mixes/supplements have monosodium glutamate ( MSG) which can cause headaches for some people. Here's a list of some not-so-evident forms of MSG's I've found online: Anything "hydrolyzed", Any "hydrolyzed protein", Calcium caseinate, Sodium caseinate, Autolyzed yeast, Gelatin, Textured protein, Soy protein, soy protein concentrate, Soy protein isolate, whey protein, whey protein concentrate, Whey protein isolate. I get headaches from MSGs however, I don't hedaches from all of the above (soy protein products, gelatin are okay). So look on your labels and see what you have. Hope this helps! My surgery is August 8th and I've just started my pre-op diet.
