Surgery Date 2 Feb 2012
ProudGrammy replied to oceangirlaus's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
:welcome: hi aussie I am 34 days post op. Just a few thoughts on post op -pain is kind of relative, after surgery you might be a little tired, a little weak, a little sore, one incision hurt for a few days. As for me, that was pretty much my after surgery "results" - other people can tell you more. I have diabetes II - i don't think it took me any longer to heal. Diabetes has so much to do about your diet, what you eat, the correct quantities. I was on metaform for years, but then i became resistant to it. So i've been on insulin these past few years. No More :hurray: The surgeon took me off insulin in the hospital til i saw my PHP in two weeks - PHP said no more insulin. Gone, yeah :woot:Diabetes disappears for many after surgery. I hope for you too. Good luck....enjoy your journey through sleeveland Best wishes Kathy :seeya: -
Oh no Jasleeve This is so not fair, not fair Waiting anxiously to hear details - I am so very sorry kathy

New Sleeve Patient 1 Week Post Op
ProudGrammy replied to mikelyn123's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Carmen :welcome: you "younogn's" I'm so jealous at your age of 32 to be starting your journey. I'm 58 and just starting too. :wink1: I'm sure we'll both have the same successful results, its just that you have a longer time to appreciate and enjoy the sleeve. How lucky you are. Actually i really am happy for all you younger people ( that makes me sound ancient). :smile5: We're all excited before, during and after we have the sleeve. We just feel better about starting a new and healthy. improved life. Take Care my friend. What a wonderful story now that you'll have to tell all. Hope you have all the support in the world Best of Luck kathy :seeya: -
Bougie? (Mispelled)
ProudGrammy replied to ProudGrammy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
when you don't know something its good to ask. I appreciate you guys answering, i feel better now Kathy -
hi all, i had my sleeve 12-15-11 so i'm still new to losing weight w/the sleeve. But i remember one time before when i had lost a bunch of weight I lost a bunch of friends. I know the reason for sure - these people were all my buddies that i went out to eat with, and eat and eat at a restaurant. All of a sudden when i had lost weight and was looking somewhat better, they didn't think they could have me around at the table not eating as much as they did. It was just awkward for them. They wanted to enjoy eating in gigantic quantities (like i used to) and i was kindof ruining their enjoyment. Hope i said this right. anyways, i agree w/all above - people can be strange when you lose weight. One friend actually told another, that she wondered when i would gain back? Oh well? kathy

Returning To Work
ProudGrammy replied to Pookeyism's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Pookey I remember when you told the forum about your loss. It must have been so hard for you to have to deal with final things surrounding your moms death, taking care of your family, kids etc. Also trying to take care of yourself after WLS - my heart goes out to you. I would once again go back to your surgeon with a different approach. He can yes clear you from surgery, but say something like "do to all he new personal problems" i feel she needs more time to re-cuperate. "Surgery was totally successful, but it would be advantageous for her to recuperate a little more at home, due to her anxiety from her mothers death, this might benefit her recuperation. As far as you PHP, who shouldn't even be as worried about the "success" of the surgery, (since he wasn't even surgeon involved) I feel he should definitely be more sympathetic saying something like - "yes, she could go back to work, but i feel it would be beneficial to stay at home for a bit re-couperating a little from her personal problems due to the death of her mother then having more time to deal with her WLS. BTW - isn't there maybe a time off you get for a "death in the family." Wish you well , take care of yourself at this hard time Kathy  BTW - what is your boss like? is she in your corner at all? -
Urgent - Advice Needed Please
ProudGrammy replied to bratvp63's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Bratv What an awful ordeal your going through. You need to take care of your personal life first. Moving temporarily into a new home. It must be so hard on your family - frequently woman take the brunt of it. You probably will have to "run" around dealing with things, picking up, moving objects, taking care of the kids - it would be so hard for a "normal" person with no physical problems to deal with, but after having WLS..? I don't see how there would be any way for you to deal with the above - and having had WLS. I know its disappointing to you to have to set another date, but in the long wrong I think it is worth it, and you will realize that too after the fact. The dr.'s office should feel sympothetic to you when you cancel, and hopefully will try and get you back on the schedule as soon as possible. Good luck & best wishes for a speedy turn around to your life kathy  -
Question For You Experts
ProudGrammy replied to crazycatlady8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi sleevedmom Remember as "they" all say, we're not physicians, but: I have Diabetes II. The metaform was giving me trouble with my kidney, so they too me off it and put me on insulin . At the hospital they took me off the insulin - and said no insulin until i see my PHP. I saw him 3 weeks later and he said with a smile to stay off the insulin. More bloodwork end of January, but he thinks everything will look good still and i will continue to stay off the insulin. :woot: Kathy :seeya: -

Pre-Surgery And Feeling Pretty Proud Of Myself
ProudGrammy replied to Writergirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Writergirl OMG who wrote the above post, it sounds like me, Last year i was supposed to get my right knee replaced. It was pretty much all set - but when i mentioned to the ortho that i was gonna be having WLS - he said hold the phone (my words!) he said i should lose some weight first before the WLS, my recovery would be better etc. Well, i was initially very disappointed cuz i really wanted the surgery now. " God grant me patience, just hurry up about it" Anyways i also new i would not be eating my foods that i love (at least in the large quantities)after surgery, so i ate and ate - my last funeral, and of course i also gained weight. Only difference is that you lost weight before your pending surgery. I didn't, taught a good lesson. I also did know that losing the weight would be beneficial all around. Now, common to both of us - you will be so excited and scared before the surgery, then more excited, then a combination of the two - but maybe more scared at the end. Thats ok - i think we all feel like that. way. This has been such an exciting ride for me. I had my surgery 12/15/11 - so i'm still a newbie i guess - loving every new day - really enjoying it. Things will be hard sometimes - but for me it was so totally worth it. My journey continues...........and yours is about to start :welldoneclap: good luck kathy -
hi - i went to my 1rst seminar/conference a few months ago. I had only heard of the lapband & the "big" gastric bypass. I was so excited to get the lapband ASAP. I also had never heard of the numerous problems involved with the lapband, Erosion, band slipping etc. At the very end of the meeting the dr. mentioned the sleeve, he even mentioned he prefers it over other WLS. It sounded kindof good, got me thinking and reading. when i saw him and started to talk to him, i realized the sleeve was for me and i was really happy. I had never heard of the "sleeve" - i know its relatively new, well to the normal public, i know its been around. i guess i'm just saying, i don't think the sleeve is advertised enough, people don't know of it, they only know of the lapband (which i agree should become extinct) and the gastric bypass. People are just not informed - and yes the dr. should speak to all, asking them about there choice, have they researched enough. Make them aware of other options. This is obviously a big decision and they need to be totally knowledgable. Anyways, my DOS was 12/15/11 - and i'm very happy and looking forward to a great journey and happy future where you all will see less of me. kathy PS not sure why this is ranting and raving ) i'm just following the suit with discussion

Drinking While Eating
ProudGrammy replied to bellabbr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As everyone else said NoNoNo drinking while eating :nono: You must wait about 15-30 minutes after you drink before you eat. You must wait about 30-45 minutes after you eat before you can have a drink. These are the rules kiddo - you must follow the rules to be a happy & successful camper in sleeve land  Kathy -

Advice Needed On Moving Past 6 Month Stall
ProudGrammy replied to ava2011's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi all is the fact that our stomachs are now 85% smaller than a normal stomach, does that contribute to the fact that we have a tendency to stall more often, and for a longer time? Possible? kathy -
Hey PaPa How's it going today. You have been leading such a wonderful life, how great is that? I guess whatever exercise you enjoy, thats the one to do. Power walking is great. My sister loves that too, PW is just not for me. I'll leave that up to you and my sister. I'm about 6 weeks out from my journey and 58 years young. The fact that you started at 61, makes me have more hope too. I'll keep running after you - who knows maybe i'll catch up. :smile1: I hope you feel proud and accomplished as you should - you have done amazing. This is no small feat. Congrats on your weight loss - :welldone2: Take care Continued happy life :thumb: kathy

Why Do People Try To Defeat You?
ProudGrammy replied to Paola's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
hi paola In my opinion you need to talk to your father. He shouldn't talk to you like that, the more you sit there and just listen to him, I think he will just continue to say nasty things. Stand your ground, i'm not sure what you should say, but basically something like, "i don't appreciate what you are saying to me. Its degrading. I'm handling my weight the way I want, and you shouldn't put me down by saying I won't succeed. I will continue to work hard and i will succeed." I don't know something like that. I talk a lot about food too, to my DH, he's the only one around so he's stuck listening to me! Unfortunately maybe you shouldn't talk about food that much around your family. If they don't like your song, maybe you have to stop singing. Good luck to you, I know you'll do great, have a terrific journey best wishes kathy -

Everybody loses weight at a different time period, but i know you will do great. Have fun in Alaska. :wof: See you soon :seeya: -
Keeping Food Down
ProudGrammy replied to peacequeen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Peacequeen- how are you doing? We have been thinking of you so much, wishing you well and all that good stuff. That said... As far as feeling down, and even regretful of the WLS - I understand why you feel that way after all you have been through. You are really at the very beginning of your long journey...starting tomorrow. :wink1: At the very beginning many have trouble drinking liquids at all, sound like that is going on with you now. No food now, I don't think pudding is right for you now. In your case you should be getting a lot more attention and instructions and assistance. You need help from the NUT and I'm sure you'll get it. Just ask for help from all of us in sleeve land. You know we're here.. I don't have to tell you about all the support you'll get here. Just yell - we all want to help :grouphug4: kathy  -
Knowing What You Know Now, What Would You Do Differently?
ProudGrammy replied to Amanda 3.0's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hi bellabarr :welcome: Hope your in better spirits today. As everyone else, i also am sorry you're having a rough time at the beginning of your sleeve journey. I'm also sorry that apparently you were misinformed about how the surgery works, and how things will go. Most dr.'s will give information about the procedure and end results. I know i had several meeting with the nutritionalist at the bariatric center, and am having more discussions over the phone and in person when the need arrives. The nutrionist is the lifeline to me getting information and explaining things about food stages and different eating habits. It's been said before, having the sleeve does not give magical overnight results. Dilgence is the correct word that goes along with the surgery. I don't know what people told you -. the sleeve is wonderful, i'm sure you've heard that said. But you have to work with the sleeve to get successful results. You do have to change your attitude towards food, I know thats such an overused statement, but its true. Due to the lack of comments saying otherwise, it sounds like you didn't have any problems concerning the surgery. This is terrific. I also think that losing 23 lbs. in 2 months is good. You continue what you are doing, and of course you will make it to goal. Everyone loses at their own rate. 85% of your stomach is now gone, eating what you should, in the proper quantities, you can't help but lose the weight. I know you want to lose weight, thats the whole reason for this surgery, but for the sleeve to work, or any other diet, you must work with it. Smaller food portions is going to be a fact for the rest of your life. But things will get better too, you won't be eating bland foods - you can work with that. Everybody on this board is at your disposal, answering all questions asked. If we don't know the answers, we will help direct you to someone that can assist you, frequently your dr. I hope i've explained a few things. But i REALLY hope that others on line will jump in with more information. Please be a little patient, don't give up - we' re all here for you. :grouphug: Good Luck Kathy :wof: -
Hi Christine34, 101driver Two of the things you have to deal with before your surgery are how excited you are, and trying to be patient for your big day. Wow, now you can still be so excited, but not you don't have to be so patient. Surgery will be here before you know it. :woot: So happy for you both kathy

Knowing What You Know Now, What Would You Do Differently?
ProudGrammy replied to Amanda 3.0's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know i would have sharpened up about info on the sleeve better. But i really didn't know how to go about doing this, where to find info. Dr.'s office wasn't any help. Seriously if i hadn't found this board, and other pertinent stuff on the computer, i would have had no idea what to expect. Luckily i found all this good stuff on the board and the computer in general. thank goodness for certain resources. kathy -
Working Out And Calories...how Does This Work?
ProudGrammy replied to his2my2our4's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I keep hearing about ZUMBA - is that some kind of extensive, super hard exercise? Thanks for explaining. kathy -
:welcome: hi linda glad to meet you. BTW losing 77 lbs from April 19, thats pretty great. :woot: like you said, we all lose weight differently. I am 5 weeks post op - 58 years old - hopefully i'll follow suit with my weight too. :hurray: all of us sleevers have to follow our food guidelines and all will be well with the world, no stretching of the sleeve - :seeya: we be nice to our sleeve, and it will be nice to us. kathy BTW there is a forum by ages, so the 60's are there. :smile5:
