1. I had my surgery June 16th, 2011.

2. Yesterday I was able to get in about 6 oz of protein shake in at one sitting, within an hour. Today I can barely get 2 oz in and I've been working on this for about 2 hours. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm doing pretty good with my water intake. I made sure I stopped drinking water 30 mins before I started the shake so I would be able to get the protein shake in. I actually felt hungry yesterday...today not so much. Any advice appreciated

Scared

Thanks KathyD49 I found that list today. I've decided to attempt to get some Grape Isopure and work on that.

Scared

I'm drinking some diluted apple juice and starting to feel a bit human. Hubby has gone to the store to get gatorade. I see my doctor in the morning.

First meal....

I've been a struggling sleever since my surgery date of June 16th. I've been admitted to the hospital 4 times for dehydration and most recently low potassium. Well..all I've been able to tolerate is water and muscle milk. Tonight I decided to try 1 oz of Fage yogurt (plain sweetened with a touch of splenda). I've been working on this for an hour and I doubt I've gotten in a solid teaspoon. Every bite is grumble grumble burp then I try again. I'm using a baby spoon and barely licking some off the end of the spoon. Was eating this slow for anyone else? I feel so far behind because of my complications and I don't want to rush anything, but I feel like I need to try to move forward. Thanks for you advice Leanne

First meal....

Yes I am on Prilosec and it has helped so much. Ya know, when I was so dehydrated (and in the hospital) I requested decaf warm tea and OMG it was so good. I swear that is what helped my tummy relax so I could get my fluids in. I agree about staying hydrated.....a few calories aren't going to hurt me.....I'll do anything to stay out of the hospital! I'll be sure to try warm tea again. Thanks

nausea

For me the nausea was worse than the pain. My doctor gave me Reglan, Phenergan, and Zofran to take at home. While I was taking pain meds my nausea was very bad. I hope you feel better soon!
10. Monday my Potassium was 3.1. They tried to give me potassium via IV and it COOKED my veins, so they had to stop. Doctor sent me home and told me to try banana's...which I did...not successfully. I did find a protein shake that had like 500 mg of potassium and I was able to get in half of it. Last night I was up til 3 a.m with leg cramps and this morning it was no better. I called the office and they are sending me for a STAT potassium level. I just hope and pray this gets resolved quickly...and to be honest...I'm so over it. I just want to recover like a normal person. UGH.

First meal....

Thank you all so much! I've been feeling like a big ole failure since having these complications and its good to know that this phase will get easier. I too wanted to be the perfect patient, but turns out it wasn't meant to be that way. I don't regret having the surgery even though its been hard. I do see progress each day so that is a very good thing. I will work on a protein shake later this evening. I've almost hit my water goal for the day
13. Zofran worked for me. Call your doc and get a script.

Here we go again...

I saw 4 doctors while in the hospital and they all were perplexed as to why it took so long to get my potassium up. Last weekend I was admitted because I was severely dehydrated...I had a Protein shake that didn't agree with me. But once I was released I was hydrated and able to drink well at home. The first sign was muscle cramps in my legs and it went downhill fast. All of the docs and nurses said its rare to have this happen. Apparently my body is just weird LOL. I've been in the hospital every weekend since my surgery and I am determined to not go back. I'm sure you will do wonderful with your surgery. Most people do. Be sure to drink drink drink. I was living on Water only for about 2 weeks...I would get sick if I had anything else...I should of been drinking gatorade or something but it made me gag. I have a feeling this is what made my body struggle. I'm gradually increasing my diet and doing good so far. I hope all goes well with you Please keep me posted!!

Here we go again...

I was released late yesterday afternoon. My potassium finally came up to 3.8 after 6 days of getting IV potassium. I feel 100% better. I do have a PICC line in my upper arm and that is somewhat uncomfortable. The doc wanted to leave it in in case my level drops again. I have NO veins left. In fact, they had to draw blood from my fingers (owie)! I'm working on getting my water and protein in. I'm 4 weeks out today and still on protein shakes. I'm going to try some cottage cheese tonight. Cross your fingers that goes well. Thanks again for the support!! I hope this ends the saga of my recovery Leanne

im truly struggling

I'm sorry you are going through time. I'm struggling as well. But it will get better! Call you doctor and have them give u something for nausea. Definately stick with clear liquids. Trust me when I tell you dehydration is extremely dangerous. I know you are doing your best to get fluids in and remember, its not your fault!!!

Here we go again...

Thank you so much Renee' I'm still in the hospital. Turns out my magnesium is extremely low as well. I just got 2 bags of IV Mag. The doctor said if the mag is low then the potassium will be as well. Hopefully once both levels get back to normal I'll be golden. Mentally I'm alot better today. My little girl called me today crying because she wanted to Celebrate the 4th with me and her daddy. That of course broke my heart. I told her next year at this time we will have a BIG party to make up for this yucky one. Anyway, I hope all of y'all have a wonder 4th!!! Thank you all so much for your support.

How cool you were in my area Disney. My potassium level was up to 3.4. After 3 bags of potassium it DROPPED to 3.1. I'm so upset. I don't understand this.

Here we go again...

I just got a PICC line inserted today because I no longer have any veins. They've resorted to take blood out of my finger today. NO FUN! Oh and my potassium hasn't come up at all. I can tell you I am not a chick that cries, but I've been like a running faucet all day. I am so emotional and so over it. I just want to be complication free. Thank you all for letting me vent here and for your kind words.

Why me?

Never in a million years would I of guessed that I would be so miserable. I'm 9 days post op and can only get down Water. I tried Protein shakes and they KILL my stomach. My doctor said to not drink them again for a while. I'm so sad. I feel like I made a huge mistake. I've posted on this board several times regarding this. Today I almost passed out. Little things like walking 15 feet from my bed to the bathroom makes me dizzy. I really think I need to go in a get fluids. I tried chicken broth today and the smell and taste made me gag. I had been able to tolerate small amounts of that until today. RIght now, I wish I would of never done this. I'm so envious of others that are able to drink Protein Shakes. My husband is being very supportive so I am thankful for that. Today is my daughter's family birthday party and I hope I can make it through that without passing out. My mother is having it at her house and my sister is going to do everything for me. I pray in a week this will be a distant memory. I'm so tired. It is so hard to get my water in because I have no energy. I just want to nap, but end up staying up late so I can get my water in. Lack of sleep isn't helping at all. Oh and I would love to take pain medicine but it also makes my stomach roll and hurt. By the end of the day my incisions are on fire and so is my back. Please pray for me.

Why me?

I'm sorry I should of updated sooner. I came home Monday night and feel sooo much better. My potassium is a little low. They tried to give me some via IV and my veins couldn't tolerate it. I'm just now able to do protein shakes so I'm hoping to get some potassium that way. They said I could try eating banana's but I just can't bring myself to eat it. I feel like I am so far behind everyone else at this stage. I'm 2 weeks out today. Thanks everyone so much for your kind words and concern. It really helped knowing I had support from fellow sleevers
25. So last night I dreamed I popped a peanut M&M in my mouth and chewed it, then remembered I had surgery and woke up freaking out thinking I was eating in my sleep. The dream was SOOOOO real. I've had a few dreams like this since surgery (I'm 13 days post op). Has this happened to anyone else? I used to rarely remember when I had a dream, now they are so vivid and so many of them. I wish I could shut my mind off so I can at least sleep without dreaming about food!
