  1. I too live in Austin. I traveled to Dallas and my surgeon was Nick Nicholson. I have been very pleased with all aspects of the process. He has had a lot of successful sleevers, and he does other procedures as well. I think the more versed the doctor is, the better. I mean they just have a greater knowledge of all the possiblities for weight loss and can guide you to the one that is the right fit for you. It was well worth the drive to have his expertise.

Pre Op Day 4: Small Cheats...

glogarza, I too was not perfect in my pre-op phase. I was sleeved on 12/29, and I ate Christmas dinner with my family. I think it is important to be as compliant as you can be pre-operatively, but I empathize with you. I mean I was NEVER good at a diet. I got scared as my surgery got closer that I had "done" my part, and I will tell you my surgeon told my family that I must have done fine because my liver was small and easy for him to navigate around. I guess what I want to say is be strong, and it is OK. Just do the best you can do.

My Post-Op Diet Log (START: Mushies Stage)

WisconsinGal, I am so jealous you can eat eggs. I had a bday lunch and we ordered take-out. A bit of a toughy. The two choices I saw on the menu that I felt might work were a cup of corn chowder, or a breakfast taco (scrambled egg, black beans and avacado). I was a bit worried about the corn, I am still on mushies and I did not think corn would qualify, so I ordered the taco. I had three bites, and thought I had eaten an anchor. It was like lead. The avacado was yum, but the egg was still to "solid." I am so happy on the mushies, do I ever have to go to soft solids?
  4. Theresa,

Where is the meeting on 2/12 - is it where the info meeting was held?

  5. Megan, It is tough, huh? I was so bugged by it, I felt like I was going to toss my cookies, which is no good cause there goes the protein! So my doc said, if I cut them so they are smaller than a baby aspirin, and I take them over an hour or so. I only take on med which I cut in 1/2 so it is not too bad. Good luck!
  6. Midwest,

I am officially mushie! I had some beans with cheese and a tail of an avacado. Soo yum. It is funny, I put 1/4 c of beans, and was only able to eat about 1/2 of it. Before surgery, I do not know if I ever would have quit eating nachos - like I could eat 2 huge plates. Hope this finds you well. Have you made it to mushies, yet. I still like soup a lot. I may stay here a while!

    Time off of work

I too work in a school, I was sleeved on 12/29, and went in on Monday, 1/4 and knew I was not ready. I took off Tues. & Wed., worked 1/2 a day on Thurs, and then worked all day Friday. I was POOPED at the end of the day Friday, came straight home and napped. So this next week is my first full week back. I am in an elementary setting, so the pace and energy was just not there for me last week. I may take off Wed. this week, if I feel I need a rest mid-week. My principal has been very supportive, so that is a great gift I have had. The "work" itself is not the issue, I just did not have the energy on clear liquids. After moving to full liquids on Tues. I feel more more ready. With hindsight, I would have taken 2 full weeks off.
  8. Rachel,

Just wanted to check in on you? Any scale movement? MY FINGERS ARE CROSSED! I have not had any scale movement for 3 days, and it has me stressed, so I cannot imagine 3 weeks! Just wanted to tell ya you were on my mind. Off to Target for a new printer. HUGS! Barb

  9. Renee,

It is so good to hear you comment about losing without a lot of obsession. I totally agree with you, I had my surgery only 2 weeks ago, 12/29, but one of my big hopes was that I would NOT be on a diet in 2010. I want to be aware of what I am eating, and I want to not be out of control as I was pre-surgery, but if I want to have a small piece of pizza down the road, so be it. Have you had your success without a lot of worry about calories, carbs? I am making sure I get 60 g of protein and 60 oz of water. I am just moving to mushies this week. I guess I want to be sure and get off on the right foot....

  10. What tracking tool are you using? I want to start tracking on Monday. I am doing fine, but I need the accountability and I want to be sure what I "think" is within my goals. I have my 6 week follow-up with Dr. Nicholson on 2/10, I know it is a Wed. Is that a meeting date? Maybe I could meet ya'll at it that evening?

  11. Linda,

I am like you. I am OK with my losing, but I think I might ought to start tracking with something, just so I have some hard data on the food going in. I really have only be worried about making sure to get at least 60 in protein & liquids. I have lost 16 lbs so far, which is just great! I know that cannot keep up! I want to eat healthily, and guess one of the things I was hoping after the sleeve was to lose some of the "diet" mentality. I do not want to have "forbidden" foods, and such. I finally want for food to be what fuels my body and enjoyable, but not monoplizing my thoughts and "out of control." Like, I think it is fine to have a piece of pizza, before I would have eaten the WHOLE pizza. I might like to add a salad for more fiber & vitamins, but I take heart that you are having such great results and eating pretty normally! Thanks for always being there Linda!

  12. Linda,

I wanted to bounce off you what I am eating, and tell me what you think - HONESTLY. [i told Anna and Theresa (2BlueCats), I feel like you are my sleeve Mama, and they are my sleeve sisters.] I guess I have read some recent posts, and I do not really "count carbs." Wonder if I am messing up? Just don't want to get off on the wrong foot. Today I had some really thinned grits for bkfst, a protein shake at 10ish (23 g ptn, 3 cbs), for lunch I had 1/2 c of butternut squash soup (V8, so yum!), for dinner I had some Keifer drinkable yogurt w/ 2 tbsp of cottage cheese, and 2 spoons of hummus. Then at 8 another protein shake and 2 spoons of sf jello. I know it is WAY less food than I used to eat, but those are carbs. I am not sure Tiffykins would approve? What do you think?

    Worried duck,

    Barb

  13. I am eating way less. I am just focusing on eating good foods, and small amounts, but I have not been restricting carbs. Today I had some thinned grits for bkfst, a protein shake at 10ish, some butternut squash (V8, so yum!) soup for lunch, some drinkable yogurt w/ cottage cheese and 2 spoons of humus for dinner, and a protein shake about 8:00. I just had two spoons of sugar free jello and made me a cup of Sleepytime tea. I know that is not many calories, I think w/ the 43g of protein in the shakes + the cottage cheese/yogurt/hummus, I am OK on protein. But, all my other food was carbs. How does that look to you? The carbs help me feel "normal" energy, but I do not want to "stall." Hope this finds you well! Barb

  14. Howdy, just wanted to say hi! No real happenings to report, just wanted you to know I was thinking of you. I feel like you and Anna are my Sleeve sisters, and Linda is my sleeve Momma. I feel really good, not quite "normal. " Eating some mushies, like hummus, and drinkable yogurt with cottage cheese, this morning I had thinned grits for the first time. I have to use MOM to move things along, but I think that will improve. I have two protein shakes a day, so my protein is good too. I hope this finds you well. You look like you are doing great!

  15. Anna,

No real happenings with me. Just wanted you to know I am thinking about you. I feel pretty good - I cannot say "normal" but really good. I have not lost in a day or so, but I am trying to not be TOTALLY scale obsessed. I am eating some mushies now - drinkable yogurt with a bit of cottage cheese, humus, cream soups. I do seem like I can eat a lot, which has me a smidge worried. I hope this finds you well. Thinking of you and hope you are staying warm!

  16. You know I am still a little iffy about the mushies. I had some thinned grits this morning - do ya'll do those in the MW? - and they went down with no problem. In fact, I haven't had any trouble getting anything to go down at this point. I hope as I move to the more solid foods I get a more "full" signal. So far today I had some hot tea, grits, protein shake, bowl of soup, and a glass of water (I put about an 1" of apple juice in my water, it makes it sooo much easier for me to drink). I read about all the carb restriction, and I sort of feel like all I eat are carbs? I guess, I will have to figure it out. But, I am with you beans and cheese, are you sure you aren't from TX, that is soul food in TEXAS!

  17. Another thought, those first few weeks, (pre-op...) our calories are so radically restricted, and it would seem our metabolism would really kinda shut-down. Now that you are adding some food back into your diet, it might take a while for your metabolism to catch up.... Hang in there!
  18. Rachel, How frustrating. I am just not there - yet. I know there will be the "dreaded stall." I don't know any rational reason why you shouldn't be losing - even with the carbs with such a low calorie intake. I guess, one little tip I have is try and not beat yourself up too much. I know when I would "be" good and not have any loss in my WW days, I would often go into a binge. I don't know if we can "binge," but still, it is just all the "head game" part of weight loss. I know I could not do this, BUT, maybe try to reduce your carbs like was discussed, but don't weigh again until Monday. Just let your brain have a little vacay from the stress of the stall. So sorry for this - we go through a lot and then if there is not scale victories - what a frustration!
  19. I am still on full liquids - though some of the stuff my doc will allow on full liquids, I would consider mushies. Today I had a protein shake for bkfst, 1/2 of serving of applesauce, lunch was tomato soup and the other 1/2 of applesauce, 3ish a protein shake, tonight I had hummus and some drinkable yogurt with about a tablespoon of cottage cheese in it. I also had a protein shake at about 8:30. I feel like it is a lot. I guess because it is all really watery, I do not have any trouble getting it in or keeping it down. Next Tues. I move to mushies. So glad you are feeling better. Brrr. Keep warm.

  20. How are you MidWest girl. Just thinking about you!

    Cream of Broccoli Soup

Thanks! I tried some V8 Garden Broccoli today, and it was ok. You know since my procedure, I have like super-sonic smelling and the soup today kinda smelled icky to me. Before surgery, Broccoli Cheese soup was one of my favs and I look forward to making yours! Right now I am in love with Tomato which I could not stand before surgery - how weird it that?
  22. Shanda, You look tremendous! Wow, what a lucky fellow - you are just beautiful. Looks like 2010 are when your dreams begin! Congrats! Barb

    Cream of Broccoli Soup

Deb, Is this a "mushie" or full liquid?

    Potato Soup

Tonight I had a much simplier version of potato soup. (I am at the "full" liquid stage.) It was pretty good, not as good as this I bet, but you could make it by the cup. I also thought I could take this to work. I heated a cup of chicken broth in the microwave and added 2 tsps. of Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix. It was still real thin, which I prefer, but very flavorful.
  25. Today, I got my "drain" out and had my one week post-op weigh-in. I have lost 12 lbs! Twelve pounds! My daughter and I went to a very foo-foo mall in Dallas - it had a Barney's! Who knew they were outside of NY? But that is not the best part. Here's the BEST part - we went to lunch. My first "meal." We went to a little cafe, and I had a cup of tomato-basil soup. It was the best soup I have ever eaten, seriously! I could only eat 1/2 of it, but had no troubles what-so-ever and was completely satified. I did not know if I would ever feel normal again, and today was just splendid! I did order tea with my soup out of habit, and then remembered I was not suppose to eat & drink at the same time. It is weird, I knew it was time to stop because my tummy sort of started "rolling," like I might need to burp, so I stopped. I did not actually feel "fullness," like pre-surgery when I ate a grand Mexican meal, more like, just it is time to stop. IS THAT WHAT FULL FEELS LIKE NOW? Kinda rolly? Also, what is that hot, someone is setting on my chest feeling I get from time-to-time. Like if I take a too big sip? It was a good day, friends!
