Questions for you seasoned sleevers
I bought them all except the pillows. And used most of them. Watch the protein powders, you may spend a lot of money and hate them. Try samples first.... Or just drink them if you don't like them... like medicine!

How was your 5:2 day today?
Fast day today! I find some comfort there for sure. My "I want to do everything I want" voice is complaining, but thats the voice that got me into trouble in the first place! This morning I got back to my lowest 5:2 weight, after 11 days of vacation, fancy dinners, a birthday party and house guests. Not bad! I threw in a couple of fast days where I could, and never gained more than 3+ pounds... and now its off. I hope I can break this low this week a little more. Onward to goal! And I have a hope in hell that I can maintain as well! Have a nice day everyone.

Great Article, what so many of us Vets have been saying on here
I move around 5 days a week... for about an hour each time, I dance, I walk, I garden, I occasionally lift weights. I have been doing this for 5 years. I can see it in my body shape more than ever. I'm not trying to be a downer by posting that research, its just that I have MFP set to tell me how many calories to eat if I want to lose 1 1/2 pounds a week, (I also us a fitbit, and eat back some of my exercise calories) and now I have also added two 500cal days to each week layering the 5:2 over my already calorie counting plan, and finally I am losing... not quite one pound a week... which I am happy with, but reading those leptin findings just made me feel like there is a reason for my slow loss. I'm not just freaking doomed to live in a mystery body that regains for no apparent reason while I eat less calories than I expend according to MFP and fitbit. I am in better shape than I have been for years. That science is the one thing not on that list that I would have liked to know before WLS.

Fast Day
Is there a giant salad or steamed veggies available? Maybe some bulk with a single serving of jerky?

Accelerated heart rate
... could be a slight allergy to something... I get the same thing at times... I do have atrial fibrillation... but I don't think this is related... I get it when I make home made pudding.... milk, chocolate, corn starch, add ons.... when I keep it simple, and eat a smaller portion that seems to help. These ingredients alone do not seem to trigger the event.... ....Some people experience palpitations after eating heavy meals that are rich in carbohydrates, sugar, or fat. Sometimes, eating foods with high levels of monosodium glutamate (MSG), nitrates, or sodium can bring them on. If you have heart palpitations after eating certain foods, the problem could be food sensitivity. Keeping a food diary can help you identify which foods to avoid...... http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/what-causes-heart-palpitations

The only thing I would add is: 7. After a person gains then loses more than 10% of their weight, their biochemistry has changed. We maintain on 20% less calories than people who are naturally our new weight-lost weights, and we expend less energy doing the same things. This is a fact, and knowledge is power. It may not seem fair, but it must have helped our ancestors stay alive in leaner times. We can still eat well, exercise well and enjoy our lives well... by using our "tools" and remaining accountable in our lives. ...or something like that....

Why maintenance is so hard...
Thats how I feel about it to.

Your start date and start weight for the 5:2 method
Sorry! Poor form from me! I'm sure my scale will give me a reality check about eating such things in the morning. I have to say, when I got home and input all the crap I ate today into MFP. I didn't have enough cals to have dinner! (sadface) Anyway, I went over by about 150 cals, but some days are like that. New day tomorrow, and fast day on Monday. Have a nice sleep all.

Low Cal Recipe Share Here
I take a box of tofu (You can use silken, or firm for this for different results) cut into 1/2inch slices. pour all liquid off and return to box. Take 1/2 cup of miso paste... I use the light colored brown rice variety. Mix with 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice OR 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1/4th cup Water. Pour over tofu, make sure it gets in between pieces. cover. Let sit in your refer for a week or more! If you use the firm, you can gently rinse the marinade off, and crumble like feta or use in a sandwich or lettuce leaf. The flavor is sharp and cheesey. If you used the silken, wash very gently, you can mash it for a dip, or spread it on toast, or just eat it like I do. Its really a cheese replacement,if you are trying to get away from dairy, this is nice. I also pan fry it, grill it, and smoke it (not in a pipe) Sometimes I just like it cold, dried off and sprinkled with soy sauce and a few sesame seeds. Simple and fresh on a hot day.

How was your 5:2 day today?
Honestly, Im kind of glad when I feel a little or a lot crapy from eating something I used to gobble down all the time. My body is finally asking for some good food now and then, in stead of becoming a zombie for cra(p or ck)cakes and other kinds of food drugs. Not that I say no all the time, but I do say it more often. I just did a possible crazy vegetarian move today... I have been researching ancient grains, and cleaned my refrigerator, then headed to whole foods (or whole paycheck as we call it here...) and bought some Kamut (found in an Egyptian tomb?) in abut 3 forms (flour, rolled and cracked). Spelt (preferred by Europeans in the middle ages) in two forms(flour and crackers), and Einkorn ...( the same grain that was found in the icemans stomach)! NO GMOs. Older undeveloped types of wheat. Some used as early as 9000 years ago. I use white whole wheat at this time, not a lot, but modern wheats can experience drifting contamination from fields of GMO if they are not already Genetically modified. So I am switching over to older grains to see what happens. I made some (1/4 cup of cracked Kamut in 3/4 cup water in my rice steamer, with some veggies from my garden, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms salt and pepper, and some "chi'kin" veggie stock powder. It took about 15 minutes to cook up, and it was lovely, resotto like... a little grated parm, and a dribble of olive oil...next time I think I will ad an egg...)It was lovely. Im not feeling any kind of carb spike...yet...)

Just read this, pretty cute account of a British comedian that tried 5:2. http://www.watoday.com.au/lifestyle/kate-langbroek-20130702-2p9pv.html

At first I spread it out more, the last couple of weeks I have a protein drink in my Ice coffee, I stretch it out from 8am-2pm or so then maybe have a crystal light or plane ice tea until dinner. So thats 100 cals, then around 450 because I never seem to stick to 400! I read somewhere (always dangerous) that maintaining that ketosis/fast state by only having low carb protein drink did not put a strain on the body... but who knows!

13 months post op with 15-18 pounds left
as you can see in my states, I lost 83 pounds, then began to regain.... 22 pounds. I was close to my goal, but I never got there. I then started trying some different eating strategies, and found other vets that were having the same problems as I was, regain, not achieving goal, and difficulty losing regain. We talked about this and other problems that come with some age with the sleeve. A member of our group heard about the 5:2, and we all tried it to see how it worked. I have lost 11pounds since June 11th. I went on vacation twice, gained a little and it came right off when I went back to plan. I am currently 6 pounds from my post WLS low, and am 12 pounds from goal. I believe I can get there this time... and have a plan for maintenance I think I can live with. Take a look at the video that started this whole movement and see what you think. We do not recomment it to people who are less than a year out from surgery, but you seem like you are in the same place others of us on here were at as well. Eat-Fast-Live http://video.pbs.org/program/michael-mosley/ Best of luck!

There are a couple of 5:2 threads in the vets forum. Also the "why its so hard to maintain"(or something like that) has some talk about it too.

How was your 5:2 day today?
...down to within .3 of a pound from my 5:2 low. So happy this is working... getting those vacation pounds off had not been too bad, and I had fantastic vacation food. Having this confidence that I might just get to goal, then keep it off is such a high! (6 pounds to post WLS low, 12 pounds to original goal)

Bigger than the rest....
I am not a "super" loser, but I think this was the first place I said my weight out loud as well. I have had my sleeve for 2 1/2 years, and have not gotten to goal yet. I am close, and I know that I will, probably this year. You will be so much better off if you do it. will you reach goal? Not all do, but if you don't give up, and continue forward through difficulties, taking the long view, you can make it to a much healthier you. What the docs dont usually tell you is, losing is the easy part. Maintaining is the hard part for you must work at it the rest of your life. But the rewards are great, and you will be so much healthier and can be there for your family and have so much fun being active in your life. We have a "vets" forum here, you can go there and see what the people have to say that are out more than a year from surgery. Best of luck to you, a true adventure awaits!

Some of us "Vets" are using the 5:2 plan to lose the last few pounds, and then to maintaine. Look in the vets forum for more info. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/90290-52-folks/
