  1. I never freaked for a moment regarding surgery. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea as part of my pre surgery test. I was required to bring my cpap machine to the hospital for the night after surgery. Don't overthink. As with any surgery there are risks but there are more risks long term if you decide to wait to have surgery I have never regretted my decision. Hang in there, it is almost here, you can do it!

When to give up Diet pop?

I gave up soda the day I started my liquid diet which was 10 days before surgery. It was the day before Thanksgiving last year when I started. I have not had any soda other than a few sips for the first time just a few months ago. It was uncomfortable to drink so even though I miss it, I love myself not to give back into the tempation to start drinking it again. Good Luck
  3. I also had Aetna but with self funded employer. I called the office on Monday the Nurse had just received all the paperwork and they were reviewing that they had all the paperwork before they sent it to the review board. I called on the Wednesday morning and it was just sent over that morning. I received the call from my doctor's office that afternoon at 2:00 that they were given approval and for me to pick my surgery date. It was almost too easy. My BMI was 38 but I was diabetic. Good Luck. I never regretted this and it was the best decision of my life (well 2nd to getting married to my husband).

    The Stall From Hell!

Just hang in there. I had several long stalls during my journey. My last one has lasted 4 months. I have finally started dropping weight so I am now only 6 lbs away from my goal. Change up your routine and food. Make sure you are getting enough calories. It will start fallling again.
  5. I never thought to have either the medical alert bracelet. I use to wear one when I was considered diabetic. My husband and I was just recently in a serious car accident but we were awake when the ambulance arrived so I kept repeating that we were had bariatric surgery to the EMT and the nurses. I did call my surgeon after the surgery and they said as long as we are not experiencing any stomach pain then we would be okay. I am 11 mos out and my husband was 7 mos. We had no serious injuries but a few weeks later we found that my husband has cracked a rib. In our accident the cell phone went flying so having it in the phone, they may not find the phone. I may rethink the note on the DL.

    Setting a Goal Weight

I have changed my goals as after I change my underwear... :purplebananna: LOL. I am aproximately 5'5" and started at 232. My first thought would be around 125 so if I gain a few pounds back I would still be good. I then revised it to 135 then 145. I am currently at 155. My body decided that is where it was happy at no matter how hard I try to lose that final 10 lbs. My collar bones are starting to show so I think if I lose much more I may look too skinny. I wear pants size 8 or 10 and tops in large or size 14. I would love to lose those final 10 lbs but I am happy where I am at and will not obsess over it. My doctor never gave me a goal weight so it is just my decision. It is okay to change your mind. I think that is a normal process. Good Luck.
  7. I was still taking pain meds at night for several weeks out. I would forget that I had major stomach surgery and if I bent to much, picking up dirty clothes ect...my body would tell me to stop it. Definately walking helped but remember there is a reason for lifting restrictions. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you. Good Luck
  8. Friday night after a a lovely dinner (shared of course) with friends, my husband and I was traveling down a highway at 55 mph and someone pulled out from the side road-they had a stop sign. We hardly had any time to react with the proof of the small skid marks. We were wearing our seatbelts and airbags were deployed. They are extremely smelly and smokey. I don't know what was worse, the impact or trying to breathe the through the smoke and smell afterwards. Luckily there was 2 EMTs in the vehicle behind us that started rendering first aid immediately. We are both very shaken, very sore from the seatbelt and airbags, sore wrist (trying to brace the impact) and my husband put his arm out to protect me from the air bag (picture from the blind side-he tried to stop it).We also have some bruising to the legs as they hit the dashboard and one set of broken glasses. We both had our own ambulance ride complete with neckbrace and backboards to the hospital and was released later that evening to a friend. Then on the way home, we almost had another head on collision as someone was on the wrong side of the road and never went back over. We had to swerve at the last minute to the other side. Luckily there was no other oncoming traffic. As the doctor put it, we are bruised but nothing broken. Which has become our mantra. We are hoping to get more information about the other person insurance tomorrow as we did not exchange at the accident. From my understanding they were out walking around their vehicle afterwards.
  9. My staples was removed at my one week follow up. Very little pain at that time.

    Bruised but not Broken

Thanks for all the well wishes. We finally got a rental this morning and a copy of the accident report. The 16 yr old girl admitted she thought she had time to clear the intersection to turn left. Clearly not when the damage to their vehicle was the front driver side. The other carrier has already declared the car a total loss and is even willing to pay off the loan completely-value was a few hundred short of the payoff. We have already been pre-approved for a loan so now we get to find a new car. We are partial to the Ford seeing what happens in an accident. But are looking at all options. I did call my surgeon to see if there is anything we should be worry about but at long as we do not have any severe abdominal pain, we should be fine. Now if all other aches and soreness will go away.

    Shop much?

I got my husband addicted to the thrift store. We also don't make a lot of extra money and we both had surgery and had to replace our entire wardrobe. I went from a size 22/24W top to a size large or 14 and size 18/20W pants to size 8 or 10 depending on the style. He went from XXL to some L but now Med shirts and size 42 pants to size 32. I am buying him Nautica, Ralph Lauren Polo, and other designers clothes. I just picked up a pair of size 8 designer jeans for myself hat I saw at the department store for $70 for only $1.49. We are now down to only once a week stopping. I have made a list of wait I need to buy and try to keep it to what I need. Good Luck. Take inventory then try to keep to what you need. Other de cluttering says for every thing you bring in. If you buy something, remove one item and donate it to keep the closet from getting over crowded.
  12. You look wonderful. In February will be our 28th anniversary and I hope to have just as beautiful picture. I am loving my collar bones too!

    Maternity photo shoot

The pictures says it all. You can see the happiness in your face. I love the B&W pics. You are an inspiration to all sleevers and especially for those who hope to get pregnant in the future (of course I am past that stage). Can't wait to see the baby pictures!
  14. I was so ready for surgery. I had very little worries as this was the best decision I ever made for myself. Just think of what your life is going to be like when you are thin and healthy. I had a hard time imaging shopping in regular stores but as I got closer to surgery time, I started looking at those style of clothes knowing that it wasn't going to be long before I buy in normal stores instead fo looking at big sized clothing that even my grandmother wouldn't wear. Hang in there and soon you will realize that there was no need to worry. Good Luck.
  15. My first experience with a cheeseburger after surgery did not end well. I still think I ate too quickly and too much of the bun-I still only had half. I ended up with the foamies and extremely uncomfortable for a few hours. I have just put on 3 lbs in the past few days but we had a terrible car accident Friday night and I had an IV for a while and yesterday was comfort food as I am in a lot of pain-prescribed 2 different pain pills and muscle relaxer. Plus I haven't been able to walk due to the chest pain and difficult breathing (seat belt and airbag along with the smell and smoke from the airbag deployment...bruised but not broken. It was only one day for you, so tomorrow is a new day and back on the right track. Same for me. Good Luck

    Constipated much?

Mirilax is great but you shouldn't take it daily-per my doctor.. I have taken it to get the relief to soften but ...(TMI) if it has been awhile you are going to be hard until that is passed then it will get it sofer.. Afterward I take 1 tablespoon of benefiber twice a day. I mix it with my protein shake or with water or anything.
  17. My symptoms of low blood sugar was that I would feel flush and lighthead. I would feel weak. I was talking 500 mg twice a day and was looking to increase that before surgery. I had a 10 day liquid diet and when on that I had to discontinue my pills. I had one insulin shot while in the hospital but since then-no pills. At my 6 month follow up my A1c was 5.2. I will have labs drawn next month for my one year and I will see how it is then. My surgery was a success in that I am no longer on any medication and will probably never be on it again.

    Eating Out - Embarrasing???

Both my husband and I have had surgery....we laugh at each other when we order as we call ourselves "cheap date". We usually order one meal and still take some home. We have had no problems at any major resturant -O'Charley's, Cracker Barrel to name a few. And even at some higher end places, they actually split the meal for us in the back and bring us our own plate. As for other patrons staring...obviously the company they were with must not have been enjoyable that they had to look at other things. We have gone out with friends and had a wonderful time.

    Type 2 Diabetes

I was on metformin twice a day before surgery. My A1c was 6.9 a year before surgery. With my presurgery diet I was able to stop all diabetic medication and only had one shot while in the hospital. At my 6 month check up my A1c was 5.2. I know longer have to check my sugar levels. I do have a friend who has more uncontrolable sugar levels. She is still on insulin but have been able to reduce her medication. It may take longer for others but you will see a major benefit over time. Good Luck!

Frustrated that the Sleeve is "just another diet"

Hey Yellow Rose, I know how you are feeling in regards to the stall. I have been bouncing back and forth between 153-157 for the past 3-4 months. I had modified my goal multiple times. I am still 10 lbs of where I want to be. But when I look in the mirror, I am ok with what I am seeing. For me, health wise I am no longer on diabetic medication, I am no longer on cholestral medication. I am hiking with my husband. I am wearing a size 8/10 in pants and I have never been that small since probably Jr High School. As you said, you have been having health issues. At this point just focus on the basics, 60 grams of Protein and 60 ounces of fluids. I understand how difficult it is try to drink while be a customer service rep on the phone. My day is broken up by breaks and lunch-4 quarters in the work day I try to make myself drink a bottle of Water or something each quarter. Some days are better than others but for me that helped thinking I have to have this bottle done by break, lunch, break or end of shift. I have also at this point accept that my body may say-this is where I am meant to be....of course I still complain to my husband but overall, I am healthy and doing things I could not do a year ago. This is still a mental issue for me to get over. As other have offered, increase your fluids, increase your calories and just try not to stress. It will all happen in good time. You may not be losing on the scale but you may be losing inches. Hang in there!
  21. I switched to prilosec. I also had a change in deductible for prescriptions and a one month supply was going to cost me $300. I took the prilosec and had no problems with it taking one a day. I did not want to do the generic and for me the difference was only a few dollars and in the sunday papers once a month there was a coupon for prilosec. Good Luck!

    Anyone from Alabama?

I am doing great. It has been 10 mos since surgery, I have lost just under 80lbs and am happy at where I am at. Dr Scmitt did not give me a goal weight-of course I would like to lose another 5-10 lbs but I look and I am healthy at my current weight. The overnight stay was no problems, I walked often the afternoon and evening of surgery and the next morning I was hope by 11 am including a stop at the pharmacy. You will get use to eating smaller and slower. I was never nervous before surgery as I knew I was doing the best thing for me. We should try to meet up sometime.

Hiatal Hernia Repair with the VSG??

i also had my hernia repaired during surgery...didn't even know I had one till afterwards. I will admit I was scared about puking afterwards but I was more concerned about my tummy then the hernia. I just was very careful in eating until I knew I was healed. No biggie-not a fan of doing it but nothing to be worried about. Good Luck.
  24. My elderly parents have agreed to sell their home in IL by Fairview Heights and move in with me in AL. Does anyone know of a good moving company. I am trying to organize this long distance and want to move them Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks for any suggestions.

Death by uterus?? Is this possible??!! LOL....

I would suggest you contact your OB/GYN doctor. Something may not be right. I use to have extremely heavy periods and found that the hormone that is suppose to slow down your bleeding was not kicking in. I tried birth control pills but they did not work, They then gave me a prescription that made my body think it was menapouse so I did not have periods (I was already done with having children) but that big side effect was WEIGHT GAIN. I finally had hysteretomy (this was all presurgery many years ago) and I don't miss a thing with that time of month anymore. The main thing is there may be a medical reason so you may not want to wait.
