  1. I am a 47 yr old female, type 2 diabetic taking 1000 mg Metformin 2x a day. I was first considering the lap band as my insurance did not cover the sleeve but by the time I finished the requirements, they now allow the sleeve. I started a pre surgery liquid diet on November 23. My PCP and I monitored my sugar very closely when I started the diet and that was the last day I took my diabetic medication. I was sleeved Dec 1 and while in the hospital I was given 2 units of insulin once-due to the IV solutions raising my sugar levels. I am now 4 days post op and my sugar level is stabalized between 100 and 110. Most people in my support group with the doctor's office have stated that they are off their medications within just a few days of surgery.
  2. I would have on occasion acid reflux but did not take any medications. I was sleeved on Dec 1st and they found a hiatal hernia which they repaired. While in the hospital they gave me iv prescription to reduce acid and when I was discharged, a rx for liquid nexium. I have not had a single issue with any reflux since surgery. Good Luck.

    Alabama Doctors?

I was just sleeved by Dr Lee Schmitt on Dec 1st. Their office staff is wonderful, the support group is great, the hospital was wonderful-St Vincent's East. They are a Center of Bariatric Excellence. They have monthly seminars you can attend with no obligation. I have no regrets picking this office.

    My husband is a jacka**

Lisabug, I was sleeved the same day as you. I am so sorry that your husband is not supporting you. You did not say how hold your daughter is but hopefully she is understanding and can be helpful. I did this for myself and for my health not for my husband. My husband has realized that he is also overweight and he will be getting surgery hopefully in 3 months. If all is going well, you should be feeling pretty good other than moving a slowly and every day will get better and better. My mindset is if friends and family are not going to be supportive, then they can keep all of their comments to themselves. I am only surrounding myself with positive people and thoughts. Remember you have a group of people here who are behind you 100% and will be here everyday you need us.

    How do you handle work?

I was just sleeved yesterday but the booklet we got from our NUT has breakfast snack, lunch, snack, supper and a snack you can do some lowfat yogurt or cottage cheese or even like string cheese or unsweetened applesauce. Also you can try sugar free jello or pudding. They gave us a guideline of food with less than 15 carbs and less then 5 grams of fat per serving. Hopes this helps.
  7. My doctor does the leak test at the end of surgery before he finishes. He has never had a patient have a leak after surgery. I was sleeved yesterday and home today by 11:30am with a stop to pick up the rx for liquid pain and nexium.

    Week 2 (stall?)

My doctor will have me starting the following starting week 3 when I start the mushie/soft food stage. They recommend the multivitamin when we get up, calcium with mid morning snack, lunch and mid afternoon snack and Vitamin before bed. We are make sure the vitamin and calcium is taken at least one hour apart. We will also take weekly a sublingual B-12. Spacing it out over the day make easier. They did prescribe nexium for acid and that is taking in the morning an hour a before I eat. I was just sleeved yesterday so I have not yet started all of this. I was one of the lucky ones and have not any nausea. I am doing the pain meds yet today but I will probably do that at night for a few more days.

    Approved Today!

Congrats....what a way to start the new year. I also had Aetna but my employer at the time made me do 6 months with the PCP. Now it is only 3 combined with the nutritionist which my husband has started and we hope that he can be scheduled for February. He will only be 3 months behind me as I was sleeved yesterday.....It was the best decision we have ever made.

    Today I am getting SLEEVED!!!

I was overnight at the hospital and they gave me iv pain meds and acid reducer. I did not have any issues. I did walk the hallways about every hour and that also helped in reliving pressure in working that out my system from surgery. I hope that you start feeling better soon. So far I love it and do not regret it all. I can't wait to see what the scale will say in a few days.....with all the fluids they gave me I gain 10 lbs. but that should drop back off pretty quickly.
  11. I had my surgery yesterday. I am already at home, pain is minimal but I am taking the liquid pain medicine at at least for next few days. I have no hunger at all and have to remember to drink my 2 ozs every hour for today. I have not had one bit of naseua or gas pains. I do not regret this at and wish all the other December speedy recovers.

    Chickening Out

Please don't chicken out. I had my surgery yesterday. They did find a hernia which was repaired and did a liver biopsy but I knew that I had fatty liver disease. I am already off my diabetic medication. I was release from the hospital today. My husband also only had yesterday and today off from work. I have to go back to work on next wednesday but I work from home answering phone calls. I was surprised at how well I was already feeling last night. I walked the hallways every hour and I have not experience any of the severe gas pains. I have not had any nausea and I only had the iv pain meds and never asked for any addiitonal which was available. Now I don't have a toddler and that may be your only issue but I do not regret my decision at all.

On my way to the hospital

Cinderella.....good luck....I had my surgery yesteday and home today. I can't believe how easy it was. The hardest part is over, a new life style begins. Keep us posted.

    Constipation

I had to do a bowel prep before surgery, which is tomorrow, and had to use a the whole small container of Miralax with 32 oz bottle of gatorade or drink of my choice. That is 7 doses at once. I did not have any cramps and it move things along very nice.....currently I am clean as a whistle....(I know TMI)....heading to the hospital at 5:30 am. I will definately keep some in the house afterwards just in case.
  16. I would love to say it gets easier but to be honest I have struggle almost every day. I have found that if I drink chicken broth before cooking for my husband it does get easier. I only had to 7 days...Today was my final day and tomorrow it is clear liquids only. I have to do a bowel prep tomorrow night starting at 5 pm mixing a small container of MIralax (7 doses) with 32 oz of Gatorade. Luckily I work from home but I am on phones until 7 pm. This could get interesting. I am first on the schedule for Wednesday morning. You can make it. From what I hear this is the hardest part.

    Anyone with Aetna?

I have aetna and it was very surprising on how easy it went. My doctor's office was great in filing and letting me know if we needed more. Everything was filed on Tuesday and I was missing a one on one with the nutritionist-this was after 6 months with the PCP. That visit was completed and turned in on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, I confirmed that Aetna had it and it was being forwarded for medical review. By 2 pm that afternoon, the doctor's office called to schedule as they had receveived the approval. I was so surprised it took 24 hours. My BMI was 38 but I am diabetic.
  18. I am day 5 of the liquid diet....the first few days I was eating something every two hours but I made it. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. We can do this. I even have cooked a real meal for my husband and was able to do this without cheating. I do drink chicken broth before so I feel full and I haven't even licked the spoon. LOL
  19. The best thing is to be prepared. Have your food with you if you can snack. I have been traveling with a little lunch bag with yogurt, a Protein drink while out shopping or hiking this past weekend. If you can have a thermos, keep it with hot chicken broth, Sip it like coffee. For me it gives me a full feeling plus the smell feels like you are eating something. I have preop testing tomorrow with a visit to the surgeon so I know that I will be gone for a while so I am packing my lunch and Snacks to go with me. It has definately helped.
  20. I can do low fat yogurts and low fat cream soups (cream of chicken soup and tomato soup) along with sugar free jello/puddings/broths. Currently for my protein I am using the sugar free carnation instant Breakfast. To me this taste better than the Protein Shakes but still has a good amount of protein. Each time I eat I vary it so I dont get overly bored with it.
  21. I am on day 3 of the liquid diet. My roller coaster is not as grand as your but I am dealing with the withdrawals. I have not had a soda or bread in 3 days. It is hard for me as I still need to cook for my husband and as a person who also licked the spoon....oh my god....I have resisted but it was not easy. From other posters just take it one day at a time and if that is too much-take it in smaller doses. I am eating (or should I say drinking) about every 2 hours which seems to help. I notice it is worse if I let myself get to hungry. We can do this!!!!! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is not an oncoming train but the platform to a new beginning for us.
  22. I am lucky that my husband has been very supportive. He went to the seminar with me in February when we first discussed surgery....He is currently in his nutrition class and doctor visit and hopes to have his surgery in 2-3 months after me. Take him to the doctor and have him ask questions. Explain why you are doing this. Personally, I am a diabetic on pills which the doctor just doubled the dosage back in July. I have been diagnosed with non alcohlic fatty liver disease, high cholestral. I do not have blood pressure issues but father has already had a stroke and my both of my maternal grandparents had strokes so I have it on both sides of my family just waiting to become an issue. My sister is who is almost 10 yrs older then me whose diabetes is controlled by diet is already experiencing the start of possible kidney failure. She also just this year had knee replacement surgery. I have 2 daughters-one married and one engaged-but I am not yet a grandmother but I so want to be the kind that take care of the grandkids to babysit or has them visit for the summer and can do things with them. For this, I have to be healthy-I have done many of the diets out there and after each one have gain back the the weight and then some. This is a tool that we will use like any other diet but it allows us to be more succesful then by diet alone. Don't chicken out. I haven't belong to this forum long but we can be the support for you.

    Liver ultrasound

I had a liver ultrasound done last year. I have had for years abnormal liver function blood test-this was my first indication of diabetes and then diagnosed with non alcohlic fatty liver disease. The great thing is with this surgery it will get this under control and reverse the condition...I will never say cure as once diagnosed you will also have it but it will put it in remission.
  24. I am on day 3 of the preop diet....Yes, I have had a few moments of weakness but I HAVE NOT giving into the urges. I can have low fat cream soups including tomato soup. I think this is the life saver for me as this is a bit more filling but I am eating every 2 hours also as I am currently a diabetic but after discussing this diet with my PCP Dr, I am not taking any prescriptions or my sugar level would drop to low. So far so good. 3 more days then 1 day clear liquids....Surgery is Dec 1st. My husband had me go out shopping yesterday for a while so he could eat his frozen Boston Market Turkey Dinner since I could cannot eat so I wouldn't have to smell it. You can do this, just take if one day at a time.
