  1. Hello everyone! I am another newbie who has been lurking for a few weeks. My surgery is tomorrow and I am a nervous, anxious, and excited, all at the same time. Thank you all for such informative posts. Your posts have definitely helped me make an informed decision. You have no idea how much I appreciate these forums. Wish me luck!

    Hi Amy!!!

Congratulations!! You are going to love your sleeve!!!

  2. I was reading some information on stomaphyX procedure which is done through endoscopy....isn't that basically the same as VSG, though it is done to patients who have had RNY previously and stretched out the stomach?

StomaphyX - Bariatric Revision for Gastric Bypass Surgery

Would sure as heck be nice to have it done without incisions.

    Hmmmmm Interesting!

I have no idea though, but very interesting!

I will stay tuned to see what others post.

I am saving right now for my daughters procedure.

  3. My heart breaks for you all right now!! I am so very sorry that she is still struggling! I just know she is going to get better though! Try to stay positive Champ! So many people are praying for your family! Things are going to turn around. Hang in there!!

    Big Big HUG!!!

  4. Even though I introduced myself quite some time ago I haven't posted because I just haven't had anything to add.....LOL....however, I work in a winery so I'll try and shed light on the red wine issue:

Red wines contain higher amounts of a natural preservative called tannis

If ingested in excessive quantities, tannins inhibits the absorption of minerals such as Iron which may, if prolonged, lead to anemia. Tannic acid does not affect absorption of other trace minerals such as zinc, copper, and manganese.

Also coffee and tea have high amounts of tannic acid. Foods rich in Vitamin C help neutralize tannin's effects on Iron absorption. Adding lemon juice to tea will reduce the negative effect of tannins in iron absorption as well. Adding milk to coffee and tea has very little to no influence on the inhibitory effect of tannins. In sensitive individuals, a large intake of tannins may cause bowel irritation, kidney irritation, liver damage, irritation of the stomach and gastrointestinal pain.

My surgeon pointed out that some individuals develope a sensitivity to tannic acid after VSG and Bypass - hence the advice to stay away from red wine.

Have no idea if you wanted to know all that but there you go!

    Really good info!!!

    Thanks so much for sharing!!

  5. Hello everyone. I have been lurking around on this site for a few weeks now and your stories are very inspirational. I decided to have WLS a couple of months ago and met with the surgeon at Madigan Army Medical Center (I am retired Army & my husband is still active duty), and to have the sleeve done there I would need to enter a program and it would be a six to twelve month wait. I did a twelve month program through the VA and I do not want to wait another year, so I am going to self pay for this surgery. My husband is very supportive of me having the surgery and paying for it out of pocket instead of using insurance, but when I told him I was seriously considering going to Dr. Aceves in Mexico he went nuts. I explained to him about all the people on this and other boards that went to Mexico for surgery with good experiences and all he could say was that I am a naive fool and that all those people on those boards are fake and paid to post those stories. Now, I know that I can be a little too trusting sometimes, but I have also researched a lot about this surgery and the hospital in Mexico and find it hard to believe that all the people with a long history on the forums telling their stories about surgery in Mexico would be fake. So, my question is, did anyone else have issues with their spouse/family not wanting them to go to Mexico for surgery, and how did you convince them this is the right choice. I have made up my mind that I am going through with this surgery in Mexico, I just would like to get my husband on board with me.

    I am not fake.

let me know if you want to talk.

I wouldnt recommend the doc that I had though.

    no way no how.

  6. My story sounds just like yours.

Band in, band issues, 70 lb weight loss, band slip, band removed, weight all came back -- plus some more, for good measure I guess?

I was sleeved on 1-28 of this year and I have already lost approx 40 lbs. without even trying I might add. I love my sleeve!

You have been really good advice by the posters above so I cant really add anything that hasnt been said so I will just say.........

Good Luck and I look forward in getting to know you on the boards!

    :wink1:

  7. I think I want to come over and eat dinner at your house!!!

    You make good stuff!!!

From campbellskitchen.com, my additions are listed at the bottom.

This makes a huge amount. I didn't realize how much this would make. My layers were way thicker than pictured below. I had enough for John to take leftovers for lunch and at least another 1.5 servings for later this week.

    Cheesy Enchilada Stack

    xlarge_25721.jpg

This hearty, one-dish meal features layers of ground beef, tortillas, enchilada sauce, refried Beans, green chiles and shredded Cheddar cheese...it's a wonderfully satisfying dish.

    1 pound ground beef

    2 cups prepared enchilada sauce

    Vegetable cooking spray

    6 flour tortillas (10-inch)

8 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese (about 2 cups)

1 can (about 16 ounces) refried Beans

2 cans (4 ounces each) chopped green chiles, drained

    Chopped green onion

    • Cook the beef in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat until it's well browned, stirring often to break up the meat. Pour off any fat. Stir 1/2 cup of the enchilada sauce in the skillet. Spray a baking sheet with the cooking spray.
    • Place 1 tortilla onto the baking sheet. Top with 1/3 of the beef mixture and 1/4 cup cheese. Top with 1 tortilla, 1/2 of the refried beans, 1/2 cup enchilada sauce, 1 can chiles and 1/4 cup cheese. Repeat the layers. Top with 1 tortilla, remaining beef mixture and 1/4 cup cheese. Top with the remaining tortilla. Cover the stack with aluminum foil.
    • Bake at 400?F. for 40 minutes or until the filling is hot. Uncover the stack. Top with the remaining enchilada sauce, cheese and onions. Bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Cut the stack into 8 wedges.

I crisped up the flour tortillas in a small skillet with cooking spray flipping them until they were a little crunchy on both sides. I also only had 5 tortillas on hand, and they were the 8inch.

I also added an entire can of mild Old El Paso Enchilada sauce to the meat mixture. Then used 1/2 of another can to pour over the top.

I added red, green, yellow peppers, some cumin, chili powder, minced garlic, black and white pepper to the meat mixture. I sauteed the veggies and spices in the skillet before browning the meat.

I did not add the green chiles to the stack by themself. I stirred them into the refried beans before layering. I added some chunks of Velveeta Cheese to the top during the last 10 minutes of baking because shredded cheese tends to get lost in the enchilada sauce.

    I layered in this order:

    tortilla

    meat mixture, sprinkle with cheese

    tortilla

bean and chile mixture, sprinkle with cheese

    tortilla

    meat mixture sprinkle of cheese

    tortilla

I did not add the remaining enchilada sauce until the last 10 minutes of baking because I thought it make it all a soggy mess. I just poured it over the top of the stack then added those chunks of Velveeta cheese.

The bottom and top tortilla remained a bit crispy, and the middle layered were like soft enchilada tortillas.

You can easily scale this recipe down, and personalize it.

  9. I am very sorry for your wife and the pain and worry this is causing for you both. My hopes and prayers for that leak to heal and that this process will be bearable for your wife and yourself. Now is the time to muster up faith and ask the good Lord to provide for your needs. Jesus was called the great physician, may His healing touch your wife down to every cell in her body. And through Him may peace and security be restored to your family.

  10. Hi there,

I've recently been accepted into the Kaiser weigh loss program. I know that this program will take some time before surgery (up to a year, I understand) and i'm okay with that...

    here are my questions:

So far, Ive found that the Pacific North West Kaiser does not do the lap band (I dont want that anyway) and they focus on the bypass surgery. I, after doing my research, want the sleeve. So much so that - rather than have the bypass - i'll private pay the sleeve. I'd rather have my insurance help. I'm wondering if anyone has had the sleeve through Kaiser PNW?

Also, I have PCOS and bone on bone in one knee - and i'm only 32. I'm wondering if people that have done the kaiser program can give me a little more insight as to if that would qualify me for the surgery?

As I understand it Kaiser works different depending which area you are in. If anyone has gone through this in the Northwest and can give me info, i'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

    There you are!!!

We r gonna get you sleeved no matter what girlie!!

    I love your life!!

    xo

  11. Hi, this is my 11 day after the surgery and yesterday I went out for a birthday party with my children, I didn't have much choices about what to eat so I have Water and yogurt but I was craving to eat something so I ate a couple of pork skins now I feel terrible and scare because that might stop my weight loss. Any advice???

    Hi Maravilla!

Looks like your posting got hijacked by a fruit loop!!!

Dont pay any attention to her she is just jealous for some unknown reason.

Regarding your question though it looks like everyone else has given you really good advice.

I know its really frustrating during this time. I was sick to death of Soup and wanted something crunchy so bad. My weakness is popcorn! UGH!!!

It wont be too much longer now.

    Hang in there sweetie!!:)
