  1. I have BCBS of IL. not sure if your's is the same but with my insurance it states in the policy that they take the BMI from the first visit with the doctor, that is the BMI they use for qualifying for surgery. They WANT to see you lose weight and therefore your BMI go down. Like I said just my insurance and policy, but I would look into it again. What would be the point of a 6 mo sup diet if you didnt lose weight hence BMI going down? Good luck!

    Is Weight Watchers enough??

Hi, we have the same insurance, not neccesarily the same policy, but same BCBC IL. Anyways, I have been calling BCBS A LOT lately to get this straight because my plan states I need a 6mo supervised diet like you mention. I have been told that WW is good, but you also have to see a doctor every month and have them document EVERYTHING you have been doing WW, exercise, etc. This is just what they told me! Have you called the ins and spoken to someone? I called everyday for about a week and talked to different people and this is what I was told the last time. I just want to do everything and MORE than they want so I can get approved. GOOD LUCK sweetie! Let us know how it turns out for you!

    4 months post....good & bad things

WOW, you are doing AMAZING! You sound like me with two small kids and wanting to do this not only for yourself but for them too. I still have to wait 6 mo thru my MD supervised diet, but I know in the end it will all be worth it! It is SO nice to hear that you don't really care about food anymore. I grew up with food being the center of everything we did and I cannot wait to hopefully have the same feelings as you where you just don't think about it! Keep up the great work and keep us all posted of your progress. Thanks for the upliftng post today! Happy Friday!

  21. Ok, so I started researcing WLS a few months back and had originally decided the lap band was the way to go, then I found this website and did some more research on VSG and that is the way I'm going now. I have BCBS IL PPO insurance and they require a 6 mo diet and exercise blah blah blah program. I made an appt to see my dr today for my first weigh in and to talk to her about WLS etc. I have only seen this lady a few times, but liked her so I thought she would be perfect to do this for me for 6 mo. So I went in today and had my height and weight done. I am JUST on the border of the 40 BMI my insurance requires so I knew exactly what my ht and wt had to come in at. At home I measured, more than once, at 5'4" and my weight at the drs ofc came in right for that height to put me at the 40 BMI, well I didn't know this til almost the end of the visit but, the nurse measured me at 5'4.5" so it made my BMI 39.7!!!!!!!! I was so upset and tried to explain to the dr it HAD to be at 40 BMI or the ins wouldn't accept it. I came armed to that appt with paperwork from the surgeon, my own printouts of what the VSG was, advantages and disadvantages etc and what she needed to document as far as a low calorie diet and exercise counseling. She was VERY unwilling to help me. She said she knew a little about the surgery but just gave me back what I had printed for her without even reading it! She said they don't have time to do nutrition counseling there and then she told me I should see a psych to find out why I have this issue with food! I'm not at all opposed to that idea, actually think its good but just they way she said it to me. Then she told me after 5 years my stomach would just stretch back out and I would gain the weight back anyways. She told me to go to Weight Watchers and see a psych. I just don't know what to do now. I'm sorry, this is long and I'm rambling. I had already psyched my self for the 6 LONG months of weigh ins and now this just throws a wrench in my plans. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, FB

    VERY frustrated at my doctor!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm doing a search now for a new PCP. I have PPO so I can go anywhere. I will call and talk to the receptionist and see if the dr deals with WLS pts BEFORE I make an appt! I did call the surgeons ofc thinking they may do this there, but sadly they don't. I think they would make a killing if they did all this in house and it would be so much easier, but I think they deal a lot with HMOS which I don't have. Anyways thanks again for all the advice and kind words. This site has REALLY helped me A LOT!!!
