  1. There needs to be a foundation for things just like this. For people that need surgery and don't have insurance or no coverage. This is something I plan to look into. I want a non profit organization just for weightloss surgeries. This post upsets me! She has one kidney, highblood pressure, sleep apnea OMG what else do she need! I pray that u appeal this! This is very upsetting!!

There is. but it's a very new organization and there have been just a few surgeries funded so far.

  2. Fluffy, I had surgery to install the filter, then my VSG and three weeks later, the filter was removed. My venous doctor did not want to leave a filter in my vena cava for life because he was afraid it would eventually become clogged and kill me all by itself.

Interesting. I have heard about the filters being put in. I just kind of assumed they stayed there. That sucks that you had to have 3 surgeries instead of 1, but as long as everything turned out well that's all that matters. Congrats on your weight loss!

  3. I'd do the sleeve again. I remember talking to a colleague pre-surgery about his neighor who had lost sixty pounds (at that time) from her WLS. I thought to myself "Wow, That's amazing! I'd love it if I could lose sixty pounds, too!" Well, here I am at 9 months post op and I've lost 100+ pounds!

I had to have 3 surgeries total to get my sleeve because of blood clot issues, but I'd have all three surgeries again, and twice on Sunday, in order to be as happy and healthy as I am today. And, I've still got about 60 pounds until I get to goal. :)

Just wondering about the 3 surgeries? I'm assuming one was to install the filter? What else???

  4. That is correct - and I have had major surgery before WITHOUT these particular results.

I apologize - I thought OP was looking for a variety of feedback. I know that prior to my own surgery, all I saw was glowing reports of people mowing their lawns with push-mowers at 3 days post op, running in charity runs at 4 weeks post-op, eating a whole Chalupa from Taco Bell at 3 weeks post-op. I felt it was a reasonable expectation to be somewhat "normal" functioning at the one month mark. I wish I would have known and had the opportunity to speak with people who had a less-than-super experience, so that I fully knew what the possible outcomes were. Even though I am a nurse and have some clinical knowledge of what can happen post-surgically, nothing takes the place of talking to someone who has actually been there - it helps you make a more accurate decision.

Kudos to you for speaking out! First of all I am researching VSG and currently have the band. I do NOT want to hear just the happy VSG stories. I want to hear ALL the VSG stories. Only then can I make an INFORMED decision about VSG, so I do give you credit for shareing your experience even though it's not popular to do so.

I know that with the band when I was researching that there were not many speaking up about that. Those that did were attacked, so primarialy all you saw were the "happily ever after" (until it had to be removed!) lap-band stories.

That being said though, recovery can vary from person to person and from the VSG'ers I have spoken with (many) the only problems I'm hearing about after recovery is GERD/Reflux.

Take your time recovering and don't rush things. Keep us updated!

  5. I guess I have to be the one to say...I regret having the sleeve done. I do.

I'm 6 weeks post op, and am still miserable. I went from being able to pull a 16 hour shift at work with no problem, to not being able to handle a short trip to the grocery store. I have become totally lactose and wheat intolerant post-surgical. I developed a large blood clot post surgery and had to spend an additional week in the hospital. I can't get life insurance through my previous company now...because of this surgery (it's an auto-exclusion). I can't eat with other people any more...because I have no idea if what I'm putting in my mouth will give me near-instant heaves and diarrhea, even if I've had that food before with no issues.

Sure, I've lost weight - but I'm still wearing the same clothes as pre op. I wish I would have tried to diet more earnestly instead of this.

Consider well before you continue, because you can't go back. Pre-op, I was so convinced that I would be like "everyone" else - happy, motivated. I was not prepared to be one of the few who will be lucky to survive this ordeal mentally and physically in one piece.

Hugs! It sucks when WLS does not go as we were told it would. I have the band and never got restriction. Hoping to revise to VSG.

I will say this: Almost eveyone I know LOVES their VSG, so I think after you have a little more recovery time you will feel differently.

    Good luck!

  6. I had the same concerns when I started this process, this will be revision surgery for me because the lap band did not work for me....when I was in my psy consult I told her my concerns and she agreed that my concerns were valid and I should seek therapy, so I found a therapist and she has been great...she has already helped me and I've only had 2 sessions with her....when I told my friends who have also had WLS they just told me you can get the same thing reading a book....and I told them, I need someone who will have a verbal exchange with me, and a book cant do that...

I would encourage you to seek a therapist...

Good luck with the revision. One thing I hear all the time from those that revised from the band is that VSG works the was the band was SUPPOSE to work!

  7. U look awesome!!

I see that u r vegetarian, how do u get all ur Protein? I am supposed 2 get 60-70gm per day, I sometimes make it to 50. I've tried 2 protein powders, one is vanilla Body Fortress Super Advanced whey isolate that is sickly sweet!! The other is Designer whey unflavored and tastes like sour milk.

I haven't tried the Body Fortress yet. But the Designer Whey I did not like. Premier is good and it has 30g.

  8. I'm with Amanda on the closing down part. That is something I always warn ppl about with Curves. I know in AL and GA at least, they seem to always be closing. So you could sign and pay the joining fee and monthly fee just to find out it's closing in 2 or 3 weeks! Buyer beware!!!

  9. I was not diagnosed with any co-morbidities prior to WLS, but I knew if I didn't get they weight off that my health would have gone down hill. It was inevitable.

Now as far as the band, I would not recommend that to my worst enemy, so I am glad they they directed you to VSG (I am hoping to revise to it myself.) I do however think RNY and DS are also good WLS optioins. Anything BUT the band!

Contest time! Who doesn’t like FREE? And who doesn’t like DESSERT?! So this is how it works………..tell me your favorite dessert and you’ll be entered to win 2 containers (that’s 36 servings!) of Lean Dessert Protein from BSN Online!

Just make a comment on the blog telling me your favorite dessert and that enters you to win your choice of Lean Dessert flavors. You will also get extra entries for each time you re-post the contest link on Facebook, Twitter, or any of the WLS forums!

Lean Dessert comes in 6 creamy flavors!

These awesome flavors have a thicker consistency than most Proteins. They mix well, and a blender is not needed to have a smooth taste.

I love my Protein shakes really cold so I just add unsweetened almond milk and Lean Dessert Protein to my Blender Bottle and shake a few times. Then I put it in the freezer for 30-45 minutes, take it out, and shake again. This way it tastes more like a milkshake than Protein Shake!

So what are you waiting for? Enter the contest NOW for a chance to win some awesome Lean Dessert Protein!

    Good luck everyone!

  11. WLS is a difficult decision for some, however all those I know that have had VSG, their afterthought is "why didn't I fo this sooner?". The sooner you have it, the sooner you can start enjoying a healthy life!

As far as the husband, he is being extremely SELFISH! He should be supporting you all the way. This is something that will benefit you and the whole family. You want to be around longer for the kids, and you want to be able to have QUALITY time with them. However you can't change other ppl. Do what you can to change YOU! You'll be glad you did! :-)

  13. Yep! I just finished a pack of pills that's in the list of 'bad' lots and my cycle was all kinds of ****ed last month! I thought it was because of the pre-op liquid diet and then the surgery, but apparently not! Or at least, not all of it!

And I have two more packs from the same lot. Yeesh.

Thankfully, mine aren't really for birth control, per se, just regularity. :tongue2:

Get rid of them! I think u can exchange them out for some that are supposedly not defective, lol.

  14. Since pregnancy should be avoided the first year or 2 after WLS I wanted to share this article about the bc pill recall:

Well ain’t that some ****?! ONE MILLION PFIZER BIRTH CONTROL pills RECALLED! Hope you all didn’t plan on those really working! icon_wink.gif

One Million Birth Control Pill Packets Recalled

Filed under: Adverse Effects,Women’s Contraception,Women’s Health — Mike Mitka

Improper packaging of certain birth control pills manufactured by Pfizer and sold under the Akrimax Pharmaceuticals brand may leave women without adequate contraception, putting them at risk for unintended pregnancy. (Image: FDA)

Pfizer is withdrawing a reported 1 million packets of birth control pills because errors in how the pills were packaged may put women at risk for unintended pregnancy.

The company is recalling 14 lots each of Lo/Ovral-28 (norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) Tablets and Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol Tablets (generic), intended for customers in the US market. The tablets were manufactured and packaged by Pfizer and marketed by Akrimax Rx Products under the Akrimax Pharmaceuticals brand. These products are packaged in blister packs containing 21 tablets of active ingredients and 7 tablets of inert ingredients. Adequate contraception depends on a woman taking the proper pills in a designated sequence.

The products were distributed to warehouses, clinics, and retail pharmacies nationwide.

In an investigation, Pfizer found that some blister packs may not contain the proper number of inert or active ingredient tablets and that some of the tablets might be out of sequence. As a result, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception and at risk for unintended pregnancy. Pfizer said that women who took the recalled pills should begin using a nonhormonal form of contraception immediately and urged patients who have taken the recalled medications to notify their physicians and return any unused tablets to the pharmacy.

Any adverse events that may be related to the use of these products should be reported to Akrimax Medical Information at 1-877-509-3935 (8 AM to 7 PM Central standard time, Monday through Friday) or to the US food and Drug Administration’s MedWatch Program either online, by regular mail, or by fax. For regular mail, use the postage-paid, preaddressed Form FDA 3500; to fax, dial 1-800-FDA-0178 (1-800-332-0178).

Information about the lot numbers of the affected packets of birth control pills can be found here.
