Why do people bash weight loss surgery?

It's called jealousy. I believe that people become jealous when you mentioned "going to have WLS" of any type b/c they want to lose weight too, but too afraid to have WLS themselves. They know that you will get healthy and look terrific at the same time. I had the band and looking forward to being sleeved now. I hope to get healthy and to getting my comorbidities back in control.

    Before and After Pixs

Nice work, you look very nice
  4. My 1st Dr. said to do 4 Optifast shakes and one lean dinner meal for 4 weeks before surgery. I weigh 217 lbs. This new Dr. is not doing that but is doing a 2 week pre-opt diet. I'm hoping he tells me to do even less. I don't have a surgery date yet.
  5. I am scared of having this done as well, but I go in for my consultation on the 10th and will be scheduled to have my done. I had one once before when I had the lap band. I was out of it and didn't even know that I had one done until the doctor told me that he had performed one on me. I hope this one goes just as well...Glad yours went well !
  6. Well, here I go again. Back and forth, back and forth. This time my PCP has talked me into another option other than WLS. I told him that WW only lasted 1 week with me and I had only done it per his request. Now he has prescribed diet pills and I can't continue with those either b/c I'm too afraid to even take half a day.. Therefore, they're not working for me. So I'm back to wanting surgery again. I told him about things and he seems to be ok with what ever I decide to do. Good luck to all!
  7. I 've pondered over this for well over a year now, and have decided to go with the sleeve. It really makes since for me to take that route b/c I'm considered a lower weight person. I'm 5' 2" and weigh 215. I feel RNY may be a little too much for me. I'm older person and still have comorbidities after the removal of the band(which didn't help anyway). I've tried doing this on my own w/o having another surgery but I'm struggling too hard with not much success. Has anyone else done this or have been in my shoes. Please respond, I'd like to hear from others if so......Thanks!
  8. Hello Everyone, I have been debating weather or not to have the sleeve surgery. I had the band removed 1.5 years ago due to complications. From what I've been hearing from others here, is that after being sleeved many people had regrets. I would like to know what were the regrets and did things get better? I am going through the process of starting everything over again and will be scheduled for surgery in June. I am mostly doing this again due to my comorbidities, but also for appearance as well. I have 60lbs to lose per my Dr. and myself and have tried doing it on my own but just simply can't. I wanted to hear from others if the regrets are worth it. Thanks!
  9. Thank you guys so much! I feel much better just hearing the positives. If I feel down, depressed and wonder if I've made a mistake after being sleeved, I want to look back on the feedback that I've received from you all. If I do that, then I know that I'll make it. I may even need to call upon you guys again for support or just to say thanks.
  10. Thanks for your honesty. you've explained that pretty much in a way that I can totally understand the ups and downs
  11. When I told my PCP the first time he said join the "Y", (that's what I do). He also said that He didn't think that he would be able to continue to treat me. I didn't exactly know how to take that remark. I found a new PCP and this one keep saying over and over "just do WW". I've been that route several times b-4 as well as all of the other diets out there. So I thought OK, I'll try WW again and do this on my own. I did try it again but with my hunger issues and dealing with diabetes, I just couldn't do it more than a week. I was referred to an endocrinologist whom has but me on insulin and has encouraged me to have the sleeve. I went to my surgeons office 2 days ago and got the ball rolling again. I was told that I will be sleeved in June. Don't get discouraged as I did. Just go ahead and schedule with your bariatric Dr. and let your PCP know what you plan to do. Good Luck!

Over 60 and having the sleeve

Well, I saw my scheduler today. My surgery will be scheduled for June. I have to start over at least for 3 months per my insurance. Please pray for me b/c I'm known to get cold feet right before surgery.

Over 60 and having the sleeve

How You Doing 60's plus! For those who have had their sleeves a while, how are things with you? Any regrets? What has life been like for you? I am expected to have my sleeve done in April 2016.
  15. Yes, it is a struggle trying to lose on your own after years of trying everything else. Most ppl don't understand including my husband, but hopefully he'll come around. I just really need to do this for my health first and for me second. Am I scared? YES I am. I'm happy to know that I have others in my shoes.

Over 60 and having the sleeve

I'm glad to see this post b/c I am 62 and meeting w/ Dr. Friday. I had a failed band once and want the sleeve due to comorbidities. I was told that I would be OK, so I'll pass this info on to you. I'm a light weight and my Dr. said to lose 60 lbs. We can do this. Message me. Thanks!

    55+ The wonders of VSG

Thanks for your post as well. I just turned 62 and I'm also a diabetic. I've been on metformin for many years, but my Dr. has now added insulin the other day. I don't want to continue this way and really serious about getting off the insulin now. I'm considered a light weight, and that was a problem for but not now. This new Dr. said for me to continue to pursue the sleeve and that it would be a good decision. I'm scared, but want to be more healthy. I'm Ready!!

    Frustrated...pain and acid reflux

I don't know how long you've been banded, but I never overcame it. Every time I was filled, the acid was horrible. I eventually had it removed and I hated that.

    Frustrated...pain and acid reflux

I'm with PINKGIRL, you probably will revise or (like I did) have the band removed. It's been a year for me and I still need to revise to another surgery. I can so relate to drowning during sleep with acid reflux and having to sit up a while. I was afraid to go back to sleep, knowing I had to go to work in the morning...
  20. I started thinking about it 5 months after I started gaining weight and having terrible acid reflux. I had the band removed, but pondering over which revision to do. I'm thinking RNY due to diabetes but I only weigh 215. I'm worried of becoming too thin. Keep in touch!
  21. I wonder the same thing too. Your surgery date is the same as my doctor's appointment to talk about this procedure. Don't be afraid, as others have said you'll be so glad you went through with it.
  22. Hello All, I opted to have the lap band 6 years ago b/c I was too afraid to have the RNY surgery. At that time I weighed 250 lbs. I was also afraid of becoming too thin if I had that surgery. I had the failed band removed 1 year ago. Now I weigh 218 and still need help with my weight as well as diabetes and HBP. My insurance is NOW approving the sleeve, but One of the reasons for having the band removed is due to severe acid reflux (HORRIBLE). I know hind sight is 20/20, and my new surgeon believe that I will not become too thin even now. I know that It's my health that I need to focus on and I do. I know that RNY is the right surgery for me and that I can't rid my diabetes alone. I'm afraid of it's complications too, I've seen it too many times in my family. Your thoughts PLEASE!

    I Was Too Afraid...

Not losing enough weight to help rid my diabetes is reason why I sort of prefer RNY. But I have heard many say that their diabetes was put into remission with the sleeve..hmmm. I have plantar fasciitis now. I have stubborn stomach fat which is the worst to have. RNY is sounding better to me, I don't want to think about the possibility of having acid reflux again.

    I Was Too Afraid...

you're right about all surgeries and complications. I was told that we wouldn't be human if we didn't think about these things. one year ago I was told by the nurse that I was going to be very skinny. She said why not do the sleeve? I replied "Because my insurance won't pay for it". They will pay now, and I've been carrying around her words in my head for a year now.

    I Was Too Afraid...

Yes, I've heard some good and some not so good remarks concerning the sleeve. I suppose it depends on the person. My surgeon did say that if I had GERD, it may get worse. I go back to see my Dr. 10-20. I've also heard of the sleeve getting twisted...UGH
