  1. I have just had to go and see my doctor because I keep having heart palpitations. I've always had 1 or 2 a week but over the weekend they've been every 5 minutes and sometimes they make me feel dizzy. I thought maybe my anaemia had returned but my doctor thinks it down to the rapid weight loss. Has anyone else heard of this? I've done a little research on the web and apparently ketosis can cause heart palpitations which is a common side effect of a high Protein, low carbohydrate diet. I'm just feeling really down as I just seem to be swapping one set of symptoms for another. I was really hoping this band would make me feel better!

    Help! newbie needing hospital advice!

I had my surgery in Bath under Richard Krysztopik. I can not recommend him highly enough. The BMI offer a package deal which includes all your appointments and fills for a year together with a dietician. It was a bit pricey at £8000 but worth every penny as it's the aftercare that makes the band successful. Hope all goes well for you!

    Hello

Thank goodness you're getting the bypass. You did so well with the band it would be awful if you backtracked because of the MRSA. I haven't lost any additional weight since late September as I've been really ill with fibromyalgia. I am so inactive it difficult to shift anything. I'm hoping to get back on track really soon. Take care of yourself and good luck with the surgery in January!

    Hi from a new one!

Welcome to board. I was banded in February and currently going through a rough patch having just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Like you I had tried all the diets going and kept getting fatter and fatter and eventually peaked at just under 21st 7lbs. I'm now 4 stone lighter and I know that if I hadn't lost the weight I'd be in a far more pain now than I could cope with. At least I am still mobile. Best of luck with your operation. It will come around sooner than you think and you will soon be reaping the benefits!

    Dry Skin or Hair loss

Dry skin and brittle nails could be a sign of hypothyroidism. I'd get your thyroxine level checked.

    February 2007 bandsters!

.................I got off my butt and and went swimming AND I enjoyed it! I managed 40 lengths in 25 minutes which I was quite chuffed about as I haven't been in almost a year! Now I just need to keep it up and hopefully see an impact on my rate of weight loss!
  8. Same here too! 4 small and 1 a large.

    February 2007 bandsters!

I'm also losing hair but like Suzanne I have a lot to spare so I'm not too worried at the moment. I'm having a hard time keeping motivated with the eating at the moment as I've only lost 5lbs since early April. I know I need to exercise but I'm so tired after work it's all I can do to sort the house and the kids out! I'll get there in the end though.
  10. After a having a really bad week with band complications I've really come to understand that the lapband is by no means an easy way out when it comes to losing weight. I sometimes feel like I've had part of me amputated. Don't get me wrong I don't regret having the operation done for a second but it really is a massive change. I didn't realise quite how much I was emotionally dependant on food and I feel like I've lost a part of me. Take this evening, I'd just had my barium swallow and was feeling really crappy. My usual instinct would have been to get a large takeaway (probably an Indian) and veg out on the couch for the evening. Instead I had to be content with a very small chicken breast a tablespoon of potato, a tablespoon of carrot and a small floret of broccoli!! It's really weird and I'm not getting used to it as quickly as I'd like. I'm constantly having these battles with my body and my body is winning every time for a change. I never overeat as I want this surgery to work but I'm so damn irritable I feel like screaming! Does this make any sense to anyone or is this just an emotional splat on the screen!!lol!!

How do they diagnose pouch dialation?

I'm not entirely sure but a barium swallow/meal would show up a dilated pouch. I had one done for a different reason yesterday and it showed up the pouch beautifully. However it was a disgusting experience and I hope never to need one again!

Does anyone else feel like an amputee?

Thanks everyone for your replies; it's good to know I'm not going through this alone. I think I just need to take it one day at a time; with a bit of luck my brain will get used to it!

    Question about that "full feeling"

The feeling of fullness after getting a fill shouldn't be painful. For me it is a feeling that nothing else will go down. I don't get any sensation from the pouch at all. The pain you're describing is exactly what I get if I eat the wrong type of food (e.g. crusty bread) or if I eat too quickly and don't chew enough. In either case I invariably PB which relieves the pain immediately although but I'm often left feeling sore around the pouch for about 24 hours. I hope this helps!
  14. Thanks for your reply Susannah. I do suffer from depression which is closely linked to anxiety but I've been stabilised on medication for years and have it under control. I've only ever had one panic attack in my life and that was during an IT exam a few years ago when I was under a lot of pressure during my Master's degree. I don't drink coffee or alcohol so there isn't an obvious reason for why this should be happening.

    Pb?

For me it about 5 minutes after eating too fast or the wrong type of food. First I get the pain in my chest and feel like I need ti burp, then I slime, then I chuck!!lol!! I hate it with a passion!

    Am I too tight?

Thanks for the advice. I will see how I go on liquids for a bit and then reassess!
  17. louise162

    Am I too tight?

I had my 3rd fill on Wednesday (now at 6ml in a 9ml band) and didn't have any problems Thursday and Friday; Saturday eating was uncomfortable but I put it down to trying to eat a cheery tomato. Yesterday I PBed after eating soft chicken. Today I've struggled to eat anything solid and I've just PBed for the second time in two days and it was only on ground beef!! Now I'm really sore so I'm going to go on to liquids for a couple of days. So the question is am I too tight or have I just inflamed my stomach around the band. Should I wait and see or go for an unfill?

    Low Iron Levels

I had severe anaemia before my banding surgery caused by an undiagnosed giant hiatus hernia. This was repaired during my lap band surgery and I now take a liquid supplement called Spatone over here in the UK. Since taking it I feel so much better and didn't realise quite how sick I felt beforehand. Post surgery you need to make sure you eat plenty of Iron rich foods like red meats and dark green vegetables. Safest bet is take a supplement if you're worried!

    February 2007 bandsters!

The key thing here is the Protein. Like you I upped my protein. iSince Saturday I have lost 4lbs. It was purely Fluid retention due to protein deficiency. I feel much less bloated now than I did and will never make the same mistake again. Chicken/Salmon and salad for lunch not wheat crackers with a tiny bit of cheese!

    February 2007 bandsters!

You can definitely see a difference already! Well done for having the courage to post them on the Before and After thread. I'm going to do that when I've lost 100lbs. For now my pics can be linked to from my signature. Up until Saturday I hadn't lost any weight for two and a half weeks. Now in 2 days I've dropped 4lbs! I worked out that it was Fluid retention due to lack of Protein. I ate lots of protein for 2 days and spent 2 days on the loo but it worked!! I now have only 8.5lbs more to lose before I can add a new charm to my bracelet (I add a new charm every time I lost 14llbs which is a stone to us Brits!). I have 2 so far; a celtic four leaf clover and a ladybird. The next one I want is a silver heart with a blue glaze inset.

A true story of protein deficiency

Thank you so much for sharing! I've been feeling really crappy for a few weeks and not losing any weight at all. I looked up protein deficiency in response to this post and I have realised that I've been eating less than 10g of protein a day and that I am deficient. My hair is rough and my liver is tender. Thanks to your input I can now put things right!

    Tired

I'm almost certain it's down to anemia. Try and take an iron supplement. I've just started taking something called Spatone. I'm not sure if there is something similar in the US but ask a pharmacist; they should know!
  23. louise162

How often do you get fills?

I think I'm really lucky with my fills. I get them whenever I need them at no extra cost as I paid for a package. I had my first fill at 6 weeks post op; the second a week later and the third (which was today) 4 weeks after the second. I can literally call my consultant's secretary and get an appointment with a day or so.

    February 2007 bandsters!

I had my 3rd fill today and I now have a total of 6 ml in my band. So far so good. I'm able to tolerate liquids well so hopefully this is my sweet spot!

    February 2007 bandsters!

Amen to that!! I've just gone over my dieticians head and gone straight to my consultants secretary!
