The European Commission authorized a once-daily tablet form of Wegovy for weight management in adults. The 25 mg semaglutide tablet accompanies lower-calorie eating and more physical activity. It is authorized for adults with obesity and for adults who have overweight plus a related health condition.
The European Medicines Agency's current Wegovy record lists both tablets and pre-filled injection pens. The tablets are intended for adults only. EMA says they should be taken once daily on an empty stomach after at least eight hours of fasting, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines. The dose is increased gradually over 16 weeks to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
The main tablet study enrolled 307 adults with obesity, or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. EMA reports that participants taking Wegovy tablets for 64 weeks lost about 14% of their weight on average, compared with about 2% among participants receiving placebo. About 76% of the tablet group and 31% of the placebo group lost at least 5%.
Novo Nordisk's July 15 announcement gave a different pair of averages: about 17% for oral semaglutide and 3% for placebo. That trial-product analysis models continued use of the assigned treatment. The two summaries use different ways of handling treatment use and missing outcomes, so the percentages should not be treated as contradictory or interchangeable.
Oral Wegovy requires a different daily routine
The authorization adds a daily oral option to the EU Wegovy product line. A tablet and a weekly injection involve different routines. For an eligible adult, route of administration can now be part of a broader discussion about medical history, expected benefits, side effects, adherence, and personal preference.
The authorization is valid across the European Union, but practical access can still differ by country. Launch timing, reimbursement, prescribing rules, supply, and out-of-pocket cost are handled through national systems and local practice.
Authorization does not guarantee national access
Authorization does not mean that tablets are immediately available or reimbursed in every EU country. It also does not make the tablet appropriate for every adult who meets the BMI criteria.
Oral Wegovy is not simply the injectable product taken by mouth. It has its own dose-escalation and fasting instructions. The need to wait before food, drink, or other medicines may be easier for some people and harder for others.
The average trial results do not predict an individual's response. The 64-week study does not establish outcomes after many years of use or after treatment ends. Patients should use the current product information and a prescriber's advice rather than relying on a company announcement alone.
