When Can I Start Working Out?

when can I start exercising? I'm 5 days post op.... Doctor appointment is Tuesday but I'm itching to start walking.... Since my prep started (one week from surgery 8-21-12) I've lost 22 1/2lbs!!!

My husband and I have taken a "stroll" here and there, just trying to get used to being up since I go back to work soon... But I've got an itch to jump on my elliptical and get to work! lol....

Thanks!

My surgeon instructed me to walk, walk, walk and this started about 4 hours after I left the recovery room.

You cannot go wrong to walk. Like you, I'm itching to work out. I am going to gym today for the first time since surgery on 8/23. Now, in my head, I want to hit it hard.......................but I won't. One, I am not even one week post surgery. Two, I don't want to overdo it. Three, it takes baby steps. I know my enthusiasm is because I am excited and I know working out will aid in my weight loss efforts. This is a life long journey and I respect it. I am going to the gym but I am keeping it light for a while until I get full clearance from my doctor.

How AWESOME is it that I (probably you too) actually want to go to the gym?

On the road to success. Life is good!

Good for you that you've got that desire! Walking helps prevent blood clots in the legs which is a big risk after surgery. My doc suggested waiting for real exercise-exercise (weights, heavy cardio etc) until the 6 week appointment when they had us meet with an exercise physiologist. I had it done laproscopically and they said to use the same rule as sex- do it when you're comfortable. By 6 weeks alot of healing has taken place and you should be able to rock on that eliptical!

I could start walking immediately and they wanted me to walk at least once a day. I am not allowed to do any kind of actual workout for 6 weeks. It's hard to wait that long, I'm itching to do something other than walk!
