Post Surgery Surprises

I had my surgery on December 23, 2011 in a Hospital and was discharged about 4 hours later. I had done a lot of research online and asked a lot of questions of the doctors and other post op patients. The things that surprised me the most were:

#1 - the SHOULDER PAIN! Oh that lovely shoulder pain, caused by the gas that fills your belly during surgery that puts pressure on the diaphram. It was unbearable at the time but went away after two days or so. Gas X meltaway strips were my best friend and still on standby.

#2 - instestinal cramps! Surgery in your digestive system can cause peristalsis to stop completely, it happened to me, I found out four days later when it started again and the stomach cramps were like a twisting knife, thankfully it only lasted til I got to the bathroom and about 20 minutes later.

But now I'm down 22 pounds and juicy as ever, "how you doin?"

Once again this blog represents my experiences and I hope it helps. Thanks to my family... Dr Sal.. And God!

The biggest surprise for me was the pain in my back (I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time). It was excrutiating! I was pretty well prepared for the rest, but that knocked me off of my feet!!!

I'm glad to say gas pains are gone! However a milder version does appear when I overeat. So the lesson here is don't over eat! My doctors rule for that is detailed in my first blog titled "first fill... First blog" thanks for sharing guys. Makes me feel like people give a darn!

I am soooo pleased to announce that after 6 days my gas pains are finally gone!!!!! So happy that part is over! Tried apple sauce did not go so well. 3 tsps. and a stomach ache. Going to back off to liquids tomorrow. That was my first attempt at stage 2 foods! I can wait! So pleased with the weight loss so far! Down 11 pounds since last Thursday, surgery day!

2 questions:

What is peristalsis?

And how bad is the shoulder pain??? like....I can't work I have to stay in bed pain? Or..I can take some meds and make it through work type of pain????

Just curious

Peristalsis is the contractions your bowels make to move food through your digestive tract and out of it. That was a doozie! But pain oly lasted til I made it to the bathroom. It didn't help that I pigged out day before surgery.

As for the shoulder pain mine lasted a couple of days (2) or so. The pain is actually from the gas they blow up your tummy with during surgery so the more you move around the quicker you get rid of it! I went back to work 4 days post surgery and I'm a nurse assistant at a hospital where I have to transfer patients up 180 lbs quite a few times a day. I had liquid Vicodin but I crushed Tylenol during work so I wouldn't be drowzy.

Thanks for reading!

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
    • I'm literally almost crying reading this. Mostly because I'mon this pre-op diet and these last two days have been difficult... but also because I needed this! Thank you! Congrats! And a BIG congrats on quitting smoking a second time! It was hard enough to do it once... So - when I say BIG congrats... I mean BIIIIIG congrats! ❤️
