After The Post Op Diet Like Clear Liquids, Etc. What Will I Be Able To Eat?

ANewMe!

I'm just curious what foods "work" well with the lap band and what don't work so well. For instance I've seen some people say rice and breads don't work very well with their lap band. Granted rice is probably not the healthiest but I love rice! So I don't want to cut it completely the rest of my life!

Aslo please comment any tips to eating with the lap band one I can eat food and not just liquids and mushies.

I am surprised that your dietician did not spend a great deal of time with you discussing this and all other questions related to diet and the types of foods to eat. What you can eat is affected by many things, particularly the amount of restriction created by your band as you get fills. The tighter the restriction, the harder it may be to tolerate some foods. Think white when remembering things that don't work for many people: white bread, rice, pasta because they tend to become gummy in the stomach and many people get stuck on them when they don't want to move through the banded area.

Sometimes people can eat rice and pasta if they are small amounts mixed with other things, like in a casserole, which can make it easier to swallow. A lot of this is experimentation, trying a variety of things and seeing what works for you.

There's a whole progression of foods, the length of time you're at each stage greatly depends on your surgeon. The one thing that seems to be consistent is the stages themselves:

-clear liquids

-full liquids

-mushies/soft food

-solid food

Have you met with a dietitian? If not you really should, because eating can be a bit tricky. I'm 10 days post-op and constantly going back to my reference material as I ready for the next stage in foods.

Best of luck to you!

I've had my band for almost 4 years. I've kept it on the looser side because I want to continue to be able to eat solid proteins without having sliming and stuck episodes. I've lost over 250lbs and have truly been able to eat anything and everything. I can eat brown rice, whole grain pasta, all breads toasted and not. Steak and chicken (as long as it's very moist) Raw brocolli and cooked carrots have been bad but I was hungry and ate too fast. I can however eat raw carrots and cooked brocolli! Insane! Everyone is different, what you may have issues with, others may not. To be successful, I advise logging every bite you take, everyday. I have! I use www.fitday.com and I have since the day before my banding. I also follow the rule of measuring my food and eating my protein first. You have to be mindful of what and how you eat. Liquids are for immeidate post op only. Drinking your meals is the worst for banders because they just flow through the band and you're hungry right away. Be strict with not drinking with your meals. The banders I know who have had slow weight loss, drink with their meals. They push that food right through the band and they are able to eat more. I, on the other hand have done it once and I got so stuck! PM me if you have any other questions!

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
