Hi, I am Ellen, a 67 year old wife, mother, grandmother, retired geek, and boater. I am also 120 lbs. over weight. I decided to investigate Lap-Band surgery about two years ago and went to an informational seminar. Unfortunately that group didn't take my insurance, so I continued looking. Last summer the husband of a friend had the surgery, and I asked about insurance. They have the same as I have.

After additional research, and many long talks about dietary and life-style changes, my (skinny) husband (who prefers curvy women :) ) agreed to support my efforts and be my driver, exercise nag, and food cop, so I called and made an appointment for their required seminar.

I met with my surgeon yesterday and also made appointments for an Upper GI, Social/Phsyc consultation, Physical Thersapy, consultation, and Nutritional consultation. I like the surgeon. He is young, personable, and the same one as operated on my friend's husband. He comes highly recommended. He spent a lot of time making sure I understood that the band has a lower success rate than more radical bariatric procedures. He stressed that it is easy to cheat with the band, and that I MUST commit to the dietary and exercise programs. OK, so why would anyone want to go through abdominal surgery (even laproscopic) , then cheat? I'm sure I'll find out soon enough LOL

Last night I gave up wine with dinner. Today I started a food log, and am going to call the gym to schedule an appointment with a personal trainer. Later thyis afternoon I going for a long walk.

Please wish me luck on my journey!

Good luck on your journey! It's wonderful that you have the support of your husband~ you will need it! I can't imagine not having the support of the people living in my household.. it would be difficult for sure! How exciting!! Keep us posted.. it can take awhile to get through all of the insurance red tape!

Your sense of humor will be a wonderful asset!!

I had my surgery on Dec 31st and I will be 60 this year. You are right, who would cheat on this after going thru everything that we had to do before we got the surgery. You think like I do. I am down 50lbs and have stayed there for about 2 weeks now but I am not discouraged. I just keep watching what I eat and how much. I feel great and love the idear that I can put my shoes and socks on so much easier. Good Luck with your journey.

From another not so young person,

Judy

Your doc is right. Its been 8 months for me and I have only lost 30 lbs. Im currently 200lbs. I truly thought I would have lost more weight since I like to workout. This band is finicky and for many of us the process is VERY slow. I have not lost a thing in 2 months. I eat less than 1000 cals a day and work out 3 days a week ( usually more but things have been hectic lately). The amount of extreme dieting and exercise is something people dont tell you about. I think its a good choice. I paid $14 K for this band and I must say Im disappointed at times. I am unable to over eat.... but Im still able to eat any food I want. I had my band tighter but then I kept throwing up and wasnt able to keep food down. Now that Im not as restricted, I can eat anything. Which means I have to do most of the work. THATS HARD. Think carefully ( im sure you are) before putting yourself through this. Make sure you are ready to do most of the work yourself. No one told me that before my surgery. Please keep us posted
