Hi everyone. I took a leap and started the process of Lap-Band surgery. I have been overweight all of my 22 years, and obese probably since 6th grade.

Honestly, I look maybe half the size of what most people who weigh 280 pounds look like because I carry most of my weight in my butt, hips, and breasts. But the past few years have alerted me because I've consistently gained even more weight every year.

Here's the dilemma: Once I got really depressed with the way I looked and lost over 50 pounds very quickly by starving myself. So, some of my family believe that if I really wanted to lose the weight without surgery, I could. But, I am just not willing to starve myself again. My doctor and I agree that I have made earnest efforts to lose weight healthily (diet and exercise), but to no avail.

Would someone share their story on how to deal with negative family members or friends?? And please share your journey with me? Thank you very much

You need to let them know your doing this for you not anyone else. I received the same responses from my exhusband (who's still a friend) and friends. I've told them I'm tired of fighting the battle alone and if their not going to support me then I'd have to find my support elsewhere. What's most important is that you do this for the right reasons and you do it for you.

Best decision I even made. Best wishes. I still have not told my mother and she still does not know. I have lost 110 pounds and I do not have to answer all her questions. My husband is very happy as well. Best wishes imaluckydog

Thanks for the comments. They really helped. I find strength in the support on this website. I get happy every time I think of the new possibilities with weight loss (running, for instance), and this trumps any negative attitudes I may encounter
