I am from Texas and I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic last summer. I was utterly shocked. I was freshly turned 35 and my BMI was between 38 and 39 pretty much so close to 40 that I was morbidly obese in 5 or 10 lbs so one weekend of chicken and fries lol. I was just thinking I had to be a lot older or bigger to get it. I was wrong. It can happen to anyone who is overweight and at any age! I had been bouncing around in weight for a few years but unable to get to a healthy BMI. With the news of diabetes, I knew I had to get healthy and quick. I did diet and exercise for a few months but my results were minimal. I knew I had to take a big step. I decided to get VSG and was blessed to receive this gift on Feb 3, 2012.

I am now almost 6 months post op and leaps and bounds healthier. I am a lot thinner too. The VSG has been basically flawless for me. I have been able to eat healthily and within reason right from about 1 month post op. My restriction has grown naturally from 2-3 bites the first month or two to around 2-2.5 ounces of dense protein. I am so thrilled with it that I cannot even explain. I was a volume eater! The sleeve definitely helps with that. I have been following the rules successfully since being sleeved. Protein first--check--no eating and drinking at the same time--check..I still haven't quite mastered the chewing slowly yet but I'm still working on it. I think that is still a work in progress for me. :-)

I am happy to report my diabetes has improved and my blood sugar numbers have been good. I refuse to say I'm "cured". Diabetes can be put in remission though. However, if the eating starts going astray again and the weight starts creeping up--it can return! So I will ALWAYS be vigilant. I am so grateful to have the sleeve. I'm not a rich person nor did I have insurance coverage for this procedure. It was basically a miracle that I got it. I will never take it for granted!

UPDATE: My 2 year surgiversary is in 2 weeks! My A1C is normal. Blood sugars are normal. With dietary control concentrating on protein first and complex carbs and etc. next I am managing my diabetes very well and plan to keep it in remission. My weight is within a normal BMI and healthy. I am very happy with the sleeve and wouldn't change it for anything. Oh and btw my capacity for food hasn't changed in the last year and a half. I can still only eat 2-2.25 oz of protein and a few bites of veggies. So my sleeve matured at 6 months and so far has stayed the same.
