While admitting a patient the the hospital the other night, this 80- something year old with no chronic conditions looked up and me and said... "You know what's wrong with healthcare nowadays?... People are just too fat." I had to chuckle because he had no clue that I was once (recently) over 100lbs heavier. But he's correct. The costs of obesity related illnesses are unbelievable, yet it feels nearly impossible to get insurance companies to pay for wls... or even for PCPs to accept it as treatment. I was a self-pay because my insurance paid for NO wls. Luckily, I was in a position to pay cash. I feel for those who simply can't afford it-- can't afford to be fat (medications, dr visits, etc), yet can't afford surgery either.
