I know exactly how you feel - hang in there - you are not alone!

I live in Ontario Canada and last evening I had my first consult with the surgeon. Dr Cobourn is a wonderful man and inspires huge trust and confidence.

I need to know this - did anybody here burst into tears when they met their surgeon? I cannot explain what happened to me - I could not stop the flow of tears - I was not sobbing - but the tears were flowing down my cheeks! I felt like a fool - I hate to even think what the surgeon thought about them!! I am still trying to figure out - was it fear, uncertainity or relief?

Did anyone have such an emotional outburst?

The very idea that there is something we can do to stop the yo-yo cycle is pretty overwhelming! I think any emotional response is completely normal. Did I cry? No. But I did leave the first visit with the doctor's office with this feeling of OMG...this is what I've prayed for.

Nerves right before surgery? Heck, we ALL had that. Lots of people start second-guessing themselves, too. Just take a deep breath! Read some success stories and realize that their beginnings are very similar to your own now!

Its more than normal to be scared, nervous and have doubts about doing surgery. This is a major life altering event. Beings you took the initiative to talk to your doctor and go through the approval process, a big part of you is ready for this change. Always keep that in mind. The things that come after surgery, barring complications, are easier to deal with. Right now you are thinking to yourself the changes you will have to make in your eating habits, foods you will not be able to eat, etc. But after surgery you will find you don't miss them as much as you thought. I had surgery July 24th and I thought I would die if I didnt get my diet Dr. Pepper, or be able to eat at Subway, for example. You know, I'm human and I do miss those things, but I love seeing the numbers drop on the scale more! And I do have my diet Dr. Pepper, occassionally, I just have it flat now. (not so appealing but doable). I still have problems eating sandwiches, but its easier to eat bread at supper time when my band has loosened a little. But I love spinach tortillas so I eat those on the occassion I want a sandwich. I have found substitutes for the things I can't eat. In the end, when I look at my eating habits now, its healthier but I don't always make the best choices. However, I eat like a "skinny" person, I have the occassional treat, but on a much smaller scale now. I still berate myself for making a bad choice, but its not nearly as often as before the surgery. That all being said, I still deal with head hungry and the desire to eat when I am not hungry. Surgery did nothing to cure that, as I am sure you have seen on here before. I try to make better food choices, avoid slidder foods, and if I choose to eat something and I am not hungry, the band will let me know I just made a stupid choice! It hurts, feels like I am swallowing knives type of hurt. Yup, I still have that head hunger but a few times of eating feeling that painful, I sure learned to think twice, lol!

My holy crap moment came when I went in for my first fill. I am scared to death of needles. Yes, I knew this surgery involved needles, but I didnt want to do by-pass. So I am laying there on the table and doc is about to give me the numbing meds and I just started to bawl, like almost having a nervous breakdown. Oh, I scared that woman to death!! She hadnt even touched me and I was crying. It wasnt from pain or being scared. It was, because at that moment, I fully realized I ate myself that fat! That in order to lose all this weight, I had to go through needles in my stomache. I felt like the worlds biggest idiot, how could I have done this to myself, etc. How I didnt get those feelings when I was having surgery is beyond me. But yanno, I deserved that breakdown and I needed it. Because needles or not, I was gonna lose this weight finally, forever!! I've lost almost 60 lbs now. Not once have I regretted it.

And no, the fills are easy. Nice little numbing shot and I feel nothing else. When the numbness is gone, its a little sore and a little bruised. My port happens to be right at my waist, so I get to spend the rest of the day in jammy pants so I can keep the waist band off of the sore area. Good to go!

I've written a book and I hope somewhere in all that I have said, I've said something to help you! Good luck and best weight loss to you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
